Virgin Atlantic Liveries

Sat May 26, 2012 9:50 pm

At Heathrow this week, I saw three different Virgin Atlantic liveries - two were similar - the red tail, one with blue lining, one without. But the surprise were two deep red tails - not the Stanford cardinal but Harvard Crimson!

Which they seem to be rolling out a little quicker than the other revised ones. With 10 330's in the fleet by year end and all the LGW fleet being repainted when they get refurbed then there will be about half the fleet in the new livery.

That A330 looks fantastic! Even with RR engines

I hope Boeing can sort something out for the 787 engines nacelles so they can be painted different colours. Virgin's deep, metallic red is somethin else.

I appreciate all of this livery talk - thank you!

Among my favorite liveries: Royal Jordanian and Royal Brunei.

Of course, the parent of the modern livery, Alitalia, still wears well.

Wow, they really can't make up their minds - I thought there was only three. Any indecisiveness can be forgiven because they all look very stylish (particularly G-VKSS & G-VSXY).

Agreed - additionally since the Rolls Royce Trent 700s have the longer nacelle, there is more area to be painted red which helps to balance out the white of the fuselage which in turn makes the aircraft look better than a GE or P&W powered A330 would.

Just teasing really, I just prefer the GEs - they look sharp, sleek and mean, while the RR's look chunky and clunky (I've read them descibed as "fallen over pints of beer") and the Pratts sre just too stubby. Just a personal thing.

Whereas I think the RR nacelles are just too long/much. I like a little exposed exhaust pipe.

But gotta say - that metallic red is dead sexy.

I can't say I've ever compared A330 engine nacelles. Would some kind soul post photos of the GE and PW a/c so I can see what you mean?

Thanks

Very true, haven't been able to see G-VRAY yet, since they only send VSXY and VKSS to MAN,

Best part is you never know when they will suprise you with a new tail color.

Dont they usually say when they are bringing out a new tail livery beforehand?

Not sure..... last two liveries that showed up that I remember were not announced. Usually the ones they announce are the special schemes like the NY Jets or the I LUV NY etc.......

Doesn't the RR extra-long nacelle just add weight to the engine?

I personally love the new VS livery ..... I definately think it's their best and most most classy livery.

When I first joined VS, it was the livery below (G-VBIG):

Now G-VBIG has the beautiful new livery:

When a company runs out of ideas in the boardroom it's always a good idea to have a company rebrand or livery change to make everyone feel that something new is happening. It also looks good on directors CVs.

BMI spent years going this.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

The current "billboard" livery is the first genuine rebrand since the "purple lining" livery from 14-15 years ago ( can't quite recall exactly when offhand!). The interim livery was only an update to the tail design for aircraft that were due a paint anyway, partly to align it with other Virgin airlines, pending the rollout of the new livery which was already being tendered for

I don't really think G-VFAB can really be counted.....it's a one off. Loads of airlines have them.

There reason that G-VKSS and G-VSXY don't have the full candy apple metallic scheme is that Airbus messed up the paint. Hardly VS's fault. Airbus said they could do it and it turned out they couldn't so the plans were changed.

Personally, I wasn't convinced about the new livery, but now I've got used to it I think it's very smart, eye catching and professional.

Quoting babybus (Reply 16):

Equally, there are dozens of airlines that regularly rebrand to stay fresh. Particularly when its is in line with a huge investment in new product and aircraft

I would love to see G-VFAB - Lady Penelope (Biirthday Girl) with the new candy apple red and billboard titles.

In a short time though, with the new A330's, with aircraft retirements and the LGW fleet being re-fitted and painted in the new livery, about half the fleet with be painted in the New Candy Apple Billboard Livery..

From 2006? The rebrand dates from 2010 so it took four years? I have never heard the 2006 livery described as interim before. The best thing is the massive Virgin tail at T3 Check In which is going to stay in the old colours as it's MASSIVE.

June 1999 - Silver dream machine for the millennium. I seem to remember the entire fleet being done by mid 2003 so around about 4 years for the entire fleet. The current scheme has been around 2 years and only a handful of planes have been painted so far.

I only said it was being tendered for, not that it was being rolled out. Apart from the tail (and a very minor font change) the "interim" livery was the same as the previous one. My opinion is that it's an update or refresh, not a rebrand.

With regards to the tail in zone A, Sorry, I don't follow.......are you saying that it's staying? Because its big?

VS won't re-paint the entire 'current' fleet' as most of the A343's & some of A346's are being re-tired from the VS fleet soon.

The entire 'Leisure Fleet' of 744's are being re-painted now, as they are re-fitted with new cabins.

The 2 A333's that haven't got the candy apple red will be re-painted this year I believe. Once the leisure fleet of 744's are finished, the first 2 A333's will go back and have the new upper class suite fitted and livery updated.

And the remainder of the 10 A333's arriving this year will be in the new livery.

As I mentioned though, 3 of 4 A343's are already in the new livery. Also G-VTOP is in the 2010 scheme and that's leaving at the end of the year. I believe they have to be painted every so often weather they're leaving or not.

Now that VROM is back, VTOP is effectively covering the refits. Once the refits are complete VTOP is surplus to requirements. The email that I got stated that it was leaving in 2013, but I'm led to believe that it will now be going when the refits are all done at the end of the year.

However VS do tend to change their plans on a pretty regular basis so it's not of the question it could stay after all.

And if you saw the state of VTOP before it was painted, it was in desperate need of it.

I wish DJ & VA had rebranded into the current VS livery, currently they are appalling boring. I know red is QF's signature colour, but not candy apple red. And looking vaguely similar to QF still beats boring white!

Imagine the 77W in something similar to VS. Shame they missed the opportunity! Whilst many may accuse VS of brand dilution with some many refreshes, at least the didn't go down the path of their Australian cousins and go uber boring!

G-VTOP is provisionally leaving at the end of the year but VS have sensibly left their options open. It's not a question of changing their minds, they would be silly to fully commit one way or the other so far out so they have made provision to adjust the schedule, retain, or dispose of G-VTOP depending on their requirements at the time.

And yes, it looked awful before the repaint so no wonder it got new colours, even if only for a year or so!
