Continental Considering Suspending EWR-TLV Service

Fri Oct 13, 2000 10:42 am

Don't go crazy over this, but after suicide bombers attacked the USS Cole in the Red Sea, the United States has sent warning notices out to all passengers traveling to Yemen, Gaza, Israel, and a few other countries in the Mid East urging them to defer travel as a result of threating acts of violence. The top execs in Houston have not pulled the plug on the route yet, and I don't expect them to (and neither do most CO employees, with the outstanding profitability of the EWR-TLV flight), but if they do, I just wanted to give everybody just a heads-up, that's all.

Interesting question my friend.

I have always wondered if CO has any special security measures for this flight? Like LY has on ALL their flights? I have certainly hoped so.

Also, I think CO will withdraw if and only if everyone else like TW, AF, BA, LH all decide to do likewise.

I was thinking the same. Since the CO 777 flights (now twice daily) I bet some US SkyMarshals (sounds like a Delta product doesn't it), have been accruing OnePass mileage.

Or it could be temporary due to the crisis occuring in Israel and CO may not want to indanger passengers

ORD Boy 2, CO has not even decided to halt the flight.

They probably won't either unless crew and assets in TLV are somehow threatened. In that case, most foreign carriers will follow suit.

My understanding is that ALL carriers flying into Israel have to comply with added safety precautions as per Israeli aviation laws. That level of compliance varies among carriers though.

Continental staffs marshals on all flights to TLV, and flight attendants are trained to cope with terrorist situations and are taught self-defense in F/A school.
