Plane Incident At Chicago - O'Hare 5/30/12

Wed May 30, 2012 6:15 pm

Hi All,
A buddy of mine at ORD took a picture and apparently you can see a plane collided somehow.

Here's a link to the picture that I'm seeing. http://www.worldwideairlines.net/images/ordaccident.jpg

Can anyone confirm what's going on?

Mods, I apologize if i was not supposed to put a link.

Good day,
Nick

Looks like a wing clip but what did it clip??? Looks like an Eagle plane tail right next to the wing. Maybe it hit that.

As a minor point -- a wing clip would generally be categorized as an "incident", not an accident. An accident implies loss of life or serious structural damage. An incident is just any noteworthy event that has generally caused damage to the aircraft or caused injuries.

Here is confirmation of the event from local media (WLS) and includes some additional pictures:

"May 30, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A 747 airliner clipped the tail of a regional jet at O'Hare International Airport this afternoon causing some damage to the aircrafts. An American Eagle regional jet and a cargo aircraft made contact on the ground.

O'Hare Airport officials say, around 1 p.m., American Eagle 4265 from Springfield, Missouri, landed and was taxiing to the gate as EVA Air cargo aircraft Flight 661 from Anchorage, Alaska, was on the taxiway. Somehow the two aircraft made contact.

The Chicago Fire Department says there are no reports of injuries at this time."

A buddy of mine was working an ExpressJet ERJ taxiing right behind the 747, he said they tried to get the 747 to stop but by the time they realized the wing wouldn't clear and got on the radio it was too late.

Not the first time this has happened. ORD should really start routing VLA's away from the E through K concourses or at least keep them off the inner taxiway, which is taxiway "A" I believe.

Funny, I saw EVA come out of the cargo ramp and taxi across 28 just as I was pulling onto 32L. This must have happened literally a minute after I took off.

The aircraft was coming into G20 so no ramp contact was required and they probably weren't talking to anyone other than ground. The story I heard was that ground tried to tell them to stop but by the the time they realized and keyed the mic it was too late, but I can't verify that (other than listening to Live ATC).

Hi again!

A buddy of mine posted earlier on facebook.

"I've been listening to the 1730-1800Z ORD tower feed on LiveATC and here is what I have been able to put together.

19:50 into the recording, EGF4265 checks in over WILLT and is cleared to land on runway 28.

About 21:27 into the recording, EVA661 checks in with tower short of 28 to cross (doesn't say where... maybe F?). My inference is that he had been taxiing from the cargo ramp, probably for 32L T10, but since there is no ORD Ground feed on LiveATC I can't be sure of that. They were departing 32L T10 at the time, and EVA661 was for PANC, so it seems reasonable. EVA661 is told to be ready to taxi after the next arrival clears.

21:43 into the recording, UAL793, (landing 28) told to expect landing clearance closer to the runway, traffic taxiing on the runway (EVA661)

22:11 into the recording, EGF4265 told to exit right F and contact ground. A few seconds later, EVA661 is told to cross runway 28 hold short of B, traffic a 3 mile final.

22:53 into the recording, UAL793 cleared to land and told that traffic is crossing midfield and will clear momentarily.

23:16 EVA661 reminded to hold short of Bravo and contact ground.

Impact took place with EVA661 taxiing clockwise on A as EGF4265 was pulling into gate G20. Looking at the news photos, EVA661 was on the centerline of the taxiway with sufficient wingtip clearance between the taxiway and the gate area. EGF4265 was clear of the taxiway itself, but not yet across the dashed line separating the movement area from the nonmovement area. In other words, EGF4265 was not yet in an area safe from wingtips of large planes taxiing on A."

I'm gonna guess that the Eva pilot had the pants incident...followed by obscenities and considering a means of escape without anyone noticing.

Quoting Jet13 (Reply 8):

Like I said it's a relatively minor detail, but in this industry, people's ears perk up when they see or hear "accident." When we see "incident", we're then eager to read and hope for a good giggle at the latest round of Regional Jet Pinball, brought to you by yet another foreign carrier (and Delta...whatever). Hopefully there will be some new app with the objective of ramming the weed wackier with your 744...I'd buy it!

Actually, it looks like exactly the same configuration as the AF A380 at JFK.
The regional had pulled in but stopped short of the gate, the bigger aircraft was on the taxiway centreline and things looked normal out of the window.

This could be considered an accident, depending on your interpretation of 49 CFR 830 rules (commonly called the NTSB 830) and its definition of "substantial damage." Substantial damage=accident, but only if the airplane had a passenger on board and the airplane was intending to fly.

"Substantial damage means damage or failure which adversely affects the structural strength, performance, or flight characteristics of the aircraft, and which would normally require major repair or replacement of the affected component. Engine failure or damage limited to an engine if only one engine fails or is damaged, bent fairings or cowling, dented skin, small punctured holes in the skin or fabric, ground damage to rotor or propeller blades, and damage to landing gear, wheels, tires, flaps, engine accessories, brakes, or wingtips are not considered “substantial damage” for the purpose of this part."

http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text...t&node=49:7.1.4.1.12.1.1.2&idno=49

So a bent up wingtip is not considered substantial damage, but what about tail surfaces? And according to the first part of this paragraph, any damage that could alter the flight characteristics of the aircraft is considered substantial. So if the rudder is shot on the ERJ, then this would make it an accident. But if the ERJ was empty (no passengers), then this is just an incident.

In either case, welcome to aviation law. I guess we'll leave it up to the lawyers and NTSB/FAA to determine whether this was an accident or incident.

Quoting bueb0g (Reply 33):
Actually, an injury = accident

Only if the injury(ies) is defined as being a "serious injury."

A serious injury is one that "[...] means any injury which: (1) Requires hospitalization for more than 48 hours, commencing within 7 days from the date of the injury was received; (2) results in a fracture of any bone (except simple fractures of fingers, toes, or nose); (3) causes severe hemorrhages, nerve, muscle, or tendon damage; (4) involves any internal organ; or (5) involves second- or third-degree burns, or any burns affecting more than 5 percent of the body surface."

This could be considered an accident, depending on your interpretation

The definition is intending to imply serious fuselage damage. It covers other structural elements only for extreme cases, like QF32. The NTSB would, under no circumstance, categorize this as an accident. Labeling anything as an accident takes things to a whole different level, and almost always requires a loss of life or a guaranteed write off. It's also bad for statistics.

I am just curious. When the AF 380 clipped the tail of the ERJ at JFK, it was such a huge incident and made bing news. I am a bit surprised that when this have happened involving a 747, it was barely noticed. If i haven't seen it on her i wouldn't have even known

the AE ERJ was stopped, waiting for a guide person to bring it fully into the gate, and out of the active taxiway. That, obviously, did not happen fast enough on this occasion.

Rumor on the airfield is the tail of the ERJ was moved about 20 feet in the direction of the loaded EVA 747. All passengers went home or to there next destination with no injuries reported. So very lucky for all in that case. I would recognize the flight crew, cabin crew, and ground/passenger service crew who responded to the passengers aid as this could have been much worse.

The AF incident had spectacular video footage. This incident had a few snapshots of wing damage. Far less thrilling or noteworthy to drive YouTube hits or to sell soap.

Opinion only...(observation/speculation)

Take a look at the airborne picture from in the right side of the B744.

The B744 is not even on the centerline of the taxiway..did the crew of the EVA know that the ERJ was not clear of the taxiway
and tried to swing off the centerline of the taxiway to clear it. Hmm

Yes, I noticed that.

My initial thought was that the damage to the slats were damaged by the stress when the winglet was jerked by the collison.

Taking another look, the strike was inboard of the winglets.

The B744 was dead center on the taxiline (look at the intersection it was approaching to see where the lines curve to/from). The head-on shot gives a better idea:

What the heck was the ERJ doing so far back? Was it on pushback?

Not sure, but this reminds me of the DL/AF incident at JFK quite a bit....

It was taxing into the gate. The EVA 747 did not wait for it to clear
