MAS Receives First A380

Wed May 30, 2012 9:06 pm

I did a search and could not find a thread on the delivery, feel free to delete if repeated.

So Malaysia Airlines received their first A380 today and became the 8th carrier to operate the A380. Operations are set to start in early July.

Flight Global:
http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...delivery-of-its-first-a380-372419/

I just have two quick questions.

1 - Why is the livery on their first A380 missing the blue strokes, which are present in the rendering? Did they make a change in the livery or are they going to add the strokes at a later time?

2 - When is Thai going to receive their first A380? I know that its going to be in Q3 2012, but does anyone have a specific month or day?

Thanks in advance.

Once again, Congratulations to Malaysia Airlines and Airbus!

The livery is unfinished.

MAS is flying the aircraft to Kuala Lumpur for staff training. Then it will return in June to have the painting completed, before A380 services begin on 1 July.

Same. I saw it for first flight in Toulouse and the sistership in primer. Saw one again today in Hamburg Finkenwerter, both in that horrible white scheme. Even with the stripes added later it is going to be a dog of a livery compared to any of their previous liveries. It baffles me why on earth would MH not want it delivered in full livery for training - given that their first A380 has been parked up for sometime and having already been repainted once in the old liveries...

I hope the A380 does better for MH than the branding clowns they hired have.

Actually, the last thing I heard from MH on the day of the delivery was ''we are not sure if we can get the full colors done before we start London flights''.

The rest of the paint is actually a sticker. Airbus doesn't apply sticker, for the most part. Etihad and Saudi tails are usually blank until delivery. Most government jets look pretty naked too. Or all the special paint schemes Shenzhen airlines and friends fly - all applied in China. It's probably a cost saving measure. Note that not all A320 are even painted in TLS or XFW either. Some go to MST, some go to DNR etc.

On 19 May 2012, a 738 (9M-MLN) destined for MH came through HNL on the first leg of its delivery flight in a very noticeably blank livery (all white save the Malaysia Airlines font up front). Unusual as it is the first and only one thus far to show up bare here.

Picture here from The Official HNL RareBirds Blog

This delivery could be relatively aligned with the delivery of the A380 at MH. Does anyone know if 9M-MLN is getting a special livery? Or perhaps this is MH's way of being secretive in possibly debuting a new livery on both their new super jumbo and on their new smaller aircraft as well? With the "unfinished" paint jobs on both birds, could it be a special livery for both aircraft or

It hasn't even been 2 years since the new "swiped stripes" livery has been funneling through here for MH, although I like the look of this livery compared to the grey bellied livery. I would imagine a whole new livery may be a bit premature time wise, but a special livery in commemoration of something could make sense. Kudos to MH on receiving and adding a tick mark to the A380 operator column.

Have we seen what the seats look like? The article here has a few photos of First but nothing of business;http://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/article/malaysia-airlines-joins-airbus-a380-club/

I hope that MH is at east consistent moving forward with both it's branding and product, they have both seen a bit haphazard over the recent years!

Are there plans a foot to refit any of the other fleets with new J seats? How many variants do they have now? Three long-haul one or two regional?

And for goodness sake MH give your guys a new uniform already!!

9M-MLN was painted mostly white because it was their first B738 to be delivered after the decision to change their livery. To what - I really have no idea, and honestly wouldn't be surprised if they knew either.

This is what I suspect, despite MH already unveiling the renditions of the new livery on their website. Guess we'll just have to wait and find out!

Perhaps MAS just did not want the final new livery to debut on a B737-800 and therefore rather receive this B738 in all-white. After 9M-MNA is re-delivered to them in Kuala Lumpur on 30 June 2012, they could easily apply the full livery to the B738 9M-MLN (plus any other aircraft that is/are delivered between now and then).

9M-MNA arrived in KUL yesterday (30May) and is scheduled to undertake all manners of ground handling tests and on 5 June, it will conduct a demonstration flight for its staff as well as invited guests. The following day, it will depart Kuala Lumpur and head back to Toulouse (and possibly Finkenwerder - where it will receive the remaining elements of its new livery and the Premium Economy seats will be replaced by regular Economy Class seats).

In my conversation with the airline's media relations team, they definitely know what the final new livery is like ... but remain secretive about it. We just have to depend on those dependable eyes around Finkenwerder to tell us what the final new livery looks like.

The current scheme is such a completely vile monotone. I just wish a carrier would go ahead and paint a whole A380 in a special scheme....

or

would have been great but I imagine the economics of flying that sort of weight of paint around just don't add up.

I must confess I am a huge fan of the new livery, I just hope the blue is extended more universally through their brand. Currently, uniforms, seat covers, advertisements, lounges, etc nothing is the same, what element convenes a strong brand? There is no uniformity. I like the blue it is simple classy, modern and elegant.

I wonder which airline will be the first to introduce a special scheme on the A380? With that much weight in paint form perhaps it will only be a gulf carrier who can afford it?

The new MAS livery is cheap-looking and hardly better than the interim one used on the A330F. And from all colours they chose blue and dropped their traditional red. How creative and outstanding for an airline! To change the logo to one colour is rubbish too. Seems they hired the same cheap agency as JAL and asked them to something Egyptair-like but less good. In any case, MAS´ A380s will be the least good-looking yet.

The bare bones livery leads me to think:
How much does an average paint job/sticker job weigh? How much are airliners paying for the weight to carry their colors around? Just curious.

Painting an A321 is 150kg worth of paint. An all white A388 carries about 700kg. Other colors weigh more and may have other drag coefficients. A dirty fuselage can increase fuel consumption by up to 2%. LH washes their long haul aircraft every 90 days, washing an A380 takes about 10 hours and uses about 10 000 liters of water.

Eurowhite is more than a lack of creativity. It can be an economical advantage.

The other thing is .... the A380 Delivery has not been updated:

http://www.a380delivery.com/

I don't quite know where I stand in terms of the MAS livery ... as long as they make it CONSISTENT! ... hope they don't go down the VS route where there is a silly mixture of old and new.

Also, I thought the inauguration of MAS A380 flights into Heathrow was going to be timed for them to fully join OneWorld - does this still hold?

I wouldn't mind this livery too much if the wau on the tail had been positioned a little bit differently. Right now it just looks out of place and makes me think someone somewhere made a mistake.

Now if MH could make up it's mind on which of the now 3 current liveries would become the standard...

Just seen her as we landed in KL. After leaving SIN 45 mins earlier and seeing the SQ380's in their nice SQ colors, the MH was drab. But at least she is here and another 380 option.

IMO CZ is the only bad one out there, and a really bad one too. The very small English and Chinese font size is bewildering to read on such as large plane.

I feel like some airlines cannot get the correct size for their font on their aircraft.

So go to one extreme and go with the billboard titles while others go super small.

A good example is Delta and United, I wish they would make their font a little bit bigger, especially on those huge 747s.

??? I though the current trend goes exactly into the opposite direction, e.g. AF having already installed Premium Economy and LH planning to implement it.

Regarding the livery: I actually like it and I have the feeling it's the economic solution of the gorgeous special livery they once had on one of their B 777s, as shown above by nclmedic.

Oh My ... that would be something substantial indeed ....

can you image BA 747, IB A340, CX 777/A330, MSA380 ... all at Heathrow .... with OneWorld titles ....

I think I'm going to go out for a smoke.
