New Service To BDL In The Near Future?

Wed May 30, 2012 10:55 pm

http://www.geography.osu.edu/aviatio...Air_Access_Map:_Connecticut_2011Q4

A recent study by The Ohio State University shows the extent of Bradley's service to other airports. The normal nonstop routes are prevalent, but there are other destinations that are fairly big in market, with no nonstop service to BDL. These airports are PHX, LAX, and SFO. US Airways used to have service nonstop to PHX, Delta to LAX, and United to SFO. These routes are cancelled a while ago, even though the earnings were positive. Is there any hope of new service out of BDL nonstop to these airports in the near future?

Something like BDL-LAX reminds me of BOS-NRT. It hasnt been really viable until now, since the new technology 787 allows for long thin routes. I dont think BDL can support year round service on a mainline 150+seat type jet, but maybe someday there will be 70-100seat jets that can make the route possible.

It seems that BDL-PHX would be possible as a seasonal route for WN or US.

BDL-LAX was actually served non-stop by AA, DL had a stopover in CVG.

I can't speak for the AA service, but as far as DL is concerned...there was a non-stop off and on for years. It was up to 6x weekly in the song days on a 752; then was a 4-5x weekly 738 for a while, operated as a LAX-BDL-SLC-BDL-LAX routing; once SLC was dropped out of BDL, the LAX route stayed around for years, still as a 738. It was dropped for the first time with the huge oil spike in Fall 2008, came back a couple years later, and I believe was suspended again two years ago.

Anyway, DL certainly flew the route nonstop.

United DC8-50s did BDL LAX back in the 70s

For new service to BDL just look at the list of what has been lost and go from there.

I for one am surprised that IAH has not made it back yet.

That said, I'd also be weary for PIT, CVG and RDU as the 50-seat economics worsen.

Yep, and DC-8-61s if I recall at at times. UA, DL and AA have all done LAX-BDL at times. UA has done SFO-BDL at times also.

The issue may (still) be lack of 70-seaters at IAH. That route probably needs a CR7 or 170.

As long as AX keeps flying, I think PIT probably sticks around. They'd have cut it in 2008 if they were going to cut it, as it has no more feed then than now. CVG and RDU are certainly in danger, though.

Recent developments in aviation markets have not been kind to CT, what with BOS and NYC so close.

Maybe the 787 will help, though? BDL is a great airport. I have fond memories of flying to BDL from MSP and MCI...so much more convenient than the NYC airports, especially when taking your own car.

I'm surprised HVN still has traffic. I experienced the desertion of BDR back in the 90s (I grew up just two blocks away, and I was one of the few BDR supporters in a sea of NIMBYs)...I would have though the airlines would have the HVN-based pax go up to BDL or down to NYC.

At this same time TWA also operated BDL-LAX non-stops, with 707s. It was quite a popular route I believe.

That's what most airlines did. All that's left is US to PHL on the Dash 8. That's remained pretty stable for the last several years, so I'm guessing US is happy with how it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if B6 gives BDL - LAX or LGB a whirl once the A320's with winglets or the NEO's come onboard. I also wouldn't be surprised to see some additional caribbean service for B6 out of BDL.

These airports are PHX, LAX, and SFO.

I suspect the MAX, NEO, or C-series will reopen those routes. IMHO the C-series would be perfect due to the lower cost per flight, but as no likely airline to fly the route has bought it... Never mind.   AA had BDL-LAX for a few years at least. I used it a few times a year typically.    But that was when I lived in Connecticut. (I'm now on the LAX side of that route.) So wait for the NEO/MAX.

I suspect, with today's high oil prices, it will take a more fuel efficient airframe. The 738 can do it and the 738 with winglets has zero issue. It is a question of the cost of fuel burned versus the revenue (CASM vs. RASM).

I would be. LGB has lower yield than LAX. The most likely to start will be someone with the UTC air travel contract. It was DL in the past, then no-one (whomever was the lowest that day) then DL again and I wouldn't be surprised if someone had a laundry list of other airlines. However, DL/Skyteam seams to be dominant at BDL.

I'd be interested to see market share numbers amongst the alliances. UA and US both fly more mainline to BDL than to many comparable stations, and US even has a club. Of course, PMCO is pretty tiny there.
