Eagle Emergency Landing At ORD - Slides Off Runway

Thu May 31, 2012 2:11 pm

This is not a good week for American Eagle at O'Hare. ABC News in Chicago just reported that an Eagle jet veered off the runway at O'Hare. No injuries were reported and the suspected cause is landing gear problems.

RE: Eagle Flight Veers Off Runway At O'Hare

Thu May 31, 2012 2:32 pm

ABC is now reporting that Eagle Flight 4069 to Tulsa reported mechanical issues shortly after take-off. The flight requested an emergency landing and returned to O'Hare, where it slid off the runway after landing. All 31 passengers reported no injuries and were bused to the terminal.

Which runway is that? It is way off the runway and perpendicular to it unless it came from another runway...

Found a link with a bit more info:

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/05/31/plane-makes-emergency-landing-slides-off-runway-at-ohare/

From the article

"...the pilot noticed a gear problem."

"...the plane had been taken out of service for a similar mechanical issue on Wednesday, and was “thoroughly inspected by our maintenance team at ORD before being redeployed.”"

It landed on runway 10. With the message they had, there was no way to steer once on the ground since the steering with rudder only turns 5-7 degrees.

I was on an EMB 145 when the pilot lost the ability to control the nose wheel. Never could find the problem, but had to eventually replace the whole assembly.

This is little event happened at touchdown, just when the nose touched, the plane veered to the right. Out of 150 feet width, we had about 20 feet left before runway departure. Due to some skillful piloting skills, he got it back to the center line, then it veered right again at about 60 kts. He got it back and quickly stopped.

Reviewed the situation and decided to taxi, it happened two more times. Almost seemed like the nose gear turned on its own.

Never got a chance to talk to the pilot. He was too buy filling out paperwork and was very irritated. (I made phone call or two) I know the plane was taken out of service. They spent 3 days trying to duplicate it. They had it happen one more time, but could not pinpoint the issue. Maintenance's solution was to replace the whole thing.

I too was on a 145 once that had a similar problem. I was working the ramp the night before and maintenance had been taxiing it all over the airfield trying to get it to show problems. The next morning, I boarded that plane for a flight to VPS. We got on the runway, throttled up and the plane lunged left, then right, then we stopped. We sat there a few minutes and managed to taxi back to the gate where the flight cancelled.

THERE ARE NO CHUTES ON THE ERJ-145!!!! God the drove me crazy in the video she said that three times. The news really needs to stop dramatizing these events..... Plus planes report mechanical issues everyday. No reason to scare the public with the major over dramatization of this non-event. Plane skidded of the run way. No one was hurt. Enough said....

I am glad to hear that there wasn't any injuries.
How does the nosewheel steering on the EMB-135/-145 work? Is it steer by wire like the CRJ?

http://avherald.com/h?article=45067c98&opt=0 Maybe it's AE's choice of aircraft.

I'm usually afraid to fly on an ERJ 135-145 because I hear about these problems too much. It's only a matter of time until it becomes a serious problem.

Yet you'll probably get on a 737 despite all the rudder issues that KILLED people in the 80s...

Embraer's jets have one of the better safety records in the industry which is no small feat considering how hard these planes are flown.

yes the news lady is not an aviation enthusiast like we might be, or have the aviation background or knowledge but they report what they think they know. I wouldn't knock some local news person, national level reporting with "aviation experts" differant story.

I would say any day a plane skids off a runway would be a dramatic event for me, i don't know what airport you fly into where that is a norm.

You know what they say - any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Aren't those the older models? I had some qualms about flying the 732s. The 738s and the 739s are incredible aircraft.

Yes, and any landing where you can use the airplane again, is a great one!

This seems to be a great landing . . .

They're still flying, although safer now for what's been discovered. Same with jackscrews on MDs.

The quotes from the passengers did not disappoint me:

"We were coming in really fast." Check

"The pilots did a great job." Check

Obviously, I am not disputing the second one.

Question: I was once on a similar Eagle plane and we had an inflight mechanical problem. We were 30 minutes out of OKC for ORD. Pilot turned around but before we landed we did some flying to lighten fuel load. Wonder why they would do that here. Or maybe they did? Maybe gear would not retract?

I'm waiting for quotes like:

"The pilots didn't have any grey hair, so it's a miracle that someone so inexperienced didn't kill anyone."
