BUD T1 Closed. Move To T2. Pics!

Thu May 31, 2012 5:43 pm

Yesterday was the last day of operations for Budapest T1. T1 was used for LCC, but with so many flights a day now operated by LCC ( fortunately ) T1 was not able to cope anymore.

Since the end of Malev T2 had enough spare capacity so it was decided to move all ops there.

I found this link on the Budapest Airport website. An interesting read, any nice pics. Click on the picture to see full album.

Enjoy.

I flew through there a couple of months ago on Wizz and it was really interesting. Far too small for the amount of flights, but upstairs there was a little cafeteria that was very retro. The new terminal is much nicer. It's interesting to read that they expect it to potentially reopen in 4-5 years.

Nice pictures and article. However, it's a shame that the English-language skills from their editor are somewhat, errr lacking.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers!

It's too bad they're closing it again, it really was a unique little terminal. I can see how it would be overflowing with LCCs now though, so hopefully another operator will move in to T1 sometime down the road so that they can reopen this piece of history.

Are they intending to finish a rail connection to T2? It always surprised me that the 'budget' terminal 1 was the only one with a train station.

It was ironic that the terminal used by LCCs was much more convenient to the city than T2 where the bus trip takes at least 10 or 15 minutes longer. At least buses between T2 and the last metro stop will no longer have to stop at T1 which will save a few minutes.

I dont see that happen. There will not be a 2nd Malev. What airline want to start up business in Budapest when by that time FR and W6 have established a solid brand awareness and offering flights to almost all European capitals and leisure destinations. And ofcourse dont forget about U2 , DY , 4U , HV , LS etc.

Not sure if this is temporary, but yesterdays 200E bus service from the Blue Line Metro to T2 did make a lot of intermediate stops, including T1 . . .

Trains no longer stop at T1 though as of the day before yesterady. So there is no airport train service anymore.

I do not know what is more sad, the closure of Terminal 1 or seeing pictures of Budapest airport with no Malév aircraft.

This is not true. Trains still stop opposit T1, there is housing at the other side of the track, plus the bus still stops at the station to transfer pax arriving by train from other parts of Hungary to T2.

See: http://www.bud.hu/english/passengers/t1_closure

The bus 200E still stops a lot, but dont forget it is not a dedicated airport bus, it is just a busline that terminates at the airport. But all in all you can get from citycenter to T2 in 30 to 40 minutes, which is a lot faster then most capitals in Europe have.

That would be the closure of T1 for most people incl me. Me and my wallet are very happy with Ryanair at the airport

OK. I'm sure you are better informed than me. However I could have sworn though that on my arrival Sun 27 May, there was a sign at the trainstation, notifying passengers that from 30 May 2012 onwards, trains would no longer be stopping at the airport train station.

Understand. My reaction though was an answer to this:

I assume this referred to the 200E. For how long will they be stopping at T1?

Last time I was in BUD (been there 6 times so far!), I flew in on LS. T1 is actually pretty nice for an LCC shed -- obviously the building is excellent, and a wonderful reminder of golden age flying, and the renovations were very well done. But even then (2010) it was clear to me that it was straining up against it's capacity. Glad to see all of this activity making use of T2, though I hope T1 still has an active future somehow

One thing I did like about flying into T1 was the rail connection straight to downtown -- MUCH faster and more convenient for connections than taking that interminable local bus ride to Kobanya-Kispest Metro and then all the way in. Would be very good for the operators to run a shuttle bus from T2 to the rail station... Though I'm sure the response would be "Why? Just take the local bus to T1, and then hike over to the bridge and then lug your stuff up and over to the train station! We don't need to do anything to make the travel experience easier and more comfortable!"

I will be in BUD later this month so will be interesting without any MA. The new terminal is quite nice, better than what they used to have.
