DC-9 Identification Help

Sat Jun 02, 2012 11:01 pm

I'm working on editing a video and I came across a former or possibly a leased Northwest DC-9 at LAX. It appears to have a black tail with a star but I can't see anything to help me identify who is operating it. If you have any idea of the operator, or reg, I'd love to know!

Thank you so much!

I forgot to specify, the tape was shot in the early to mid-90's.

I think you're right! I'm looking for evidence now that they operated a -9. Thanks for your help! I'll research a bit.

Well that looks like a "Stars" NHL logo on the tail on a DC-9-10 (seems to me NW operated the -14 and -15 types). The Minnesota North Stars left Minneapolis in 1993 and moved to Dallas becoming the Dallas Stars. So with that it could belong to either team. But I only see "Stars" - when the team was the Minnesota North Stars they never stylized the logo as just "Stars". With that bit of information this picture is likely taken after 1993.

I can't make out the tail # but it looks like ends in "L" - NW had a bunch of DC-9-10ss that had that tail # series:

N3306L
N3308L
N3309L
N3310L
N3312L
N3313L
N3314L
N948L

I searched through photos of all of these but I can't find *any* with the black tail and Stars logo you are showing us. Maybe I'll do some more research later

It's the Dallas Stars logo as others have pointed out.

I did a google search on Dallas Stars DC-9s and came across this site that I thought was kinda interesting :

It depends on when the video was shot. Minnesota had the same logo minus the green "Dallas" from 1991 till 1993. The "Dallas" was added after they moved the team. From that video you can't tell, you'd have to go by the date.

Yeah, the Stars didn't move to Dallas until the '93-'94 season. In the '98-'99 season they won the Stanley Cup.
