Hawaiian Airlines Inaugural JFK Flight

Sun Jun 03, 2012 2:20 pm

As we all know, Hawaiian Airlines is starting their service to JFK on Tuesday (Monday night). So, I have a few questions:

1. What is going to be the flight number?
2. Is anybody here going to be on it?
3. Anybody gonna be at JFK whrn it arrives?

Any other info about the flight is welcomed as well.

1) The flight is HAL51.
2) There will be passengers on the flight along with local media.
3) HAL might have some kind of festivities at the arrival gate at JFK

HA-50 leaves during the normal mid-day rush (15:15 HST) and arrives at 6:45 EDT.
HA-51 leaves JFK at 10:10 EDT and arrives at HNL 14:40HST
I have a question on the turning of the crew. Are they going to be in NYC for one or two days?

What is the load factor for the New York flights. I looked at flight aware and pulled up the following flight:

UAL - 14 HNL - EWR

This would surmise that HA will have a small amount of competition for the direct flights so that people are not having to go to ATL, IAH, PHX, SFO, LAX, OAK or some others for a connection flights.

I would be interested as to how profitable these flights are, this is a long distance to travel.

Can't wait to see how it performs. A bit odd that its operating out of T5. Good for the Y pax, but what is service on the ground gonna look like for the F pax?

Saw a Hawaiian test bird at JFK a few weeks ago trying out the gates, etc.

Its really pretty, especially with its cousins at JFK.

Hawaiian also just announced a full-on partnership with JetBlue. This flight will see some connecting traffic. Would be pretty sweet to come from some of the smaller northeast markets, and get on just one more plane to make it to Hawaii. The booking engine on Hawaiianair.com now allows booking to/from places like Boston, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Burlington and Portland. Haven't checked with jetblue.com, but I assume the same.

Glad to see Hawaiian on this route. I am also happy that they are offering complimentary meals on their flights between HNL and NYC, unlike their competitor at EWR. I wish Hawaiian much success.

I don't have stats, unfortunately, but word has it that flights on HA between JFK and HNL are pretty booked, at least for the first few weeks. Of course, that's just word   , but with UA dominating the NYC-Hawaii route for some time, it wouldn't be surprising if it's true.

I'm actually booked on HA 50 on the 20th of July, and when I booked, It looked like there were only about three seats left in Y, with maybe 5 seats in F.

It means that the flight is closing in on being about 70% booked. That is around the point when you no longer can pre-select your seat during booking.

I leave Wednesday for a short vacation in Boston and NYC and I'm flying on this flight to JFK. I'm sure it will be packed because of the introductory fare of $212 each way - everyone in NYC knows the significance of that number! And for us who live in the 50th state, flight number HA5-0 is so appropriate.

I love long hops and although I still prefer HNL-EWR because of the ease and speed of getting into Manhattan, I am looking forward to the flight.

Just did HA HNL-SYD and thought it a great flight. Going down was a day flight and the IFE made the 10:45 hours fly by. It's complementary on international flights but might cost $$ on domestic flights.

Great aircraft and service.

4962 miles one way is a mighty loooong 'domestic' flight! That is nearly double SYD/PER or SEA/MIA!

Perhaps there are longer Russian domestic flights, as there are 12 time zones there... mindboggling stuff.

I am booked on this flight at the end of July, returning in early August. I didn't get the $212 fare, but I did get a reasonable promo fare via Hawaiian's credit card. It's a long hike, but I've been on longer nonstops from the Middle East. I'm going to bring extra snacks because the meals don't look particularly filling. I'll also buy the entertainment package since I've got my two teenagers with me. And I called HA's res dept to see if they'll check my baggage through to JHM, even though I booked the HNL-JHM portion directly through Island Air. They said it would be ok. I hope they're right.

The crew hotel, I believe, is on 10th Ave and 42nd St. It's not a terribly long walk to Times Square, but it's more than two blocks away. And the east-west blocks are LONG blocks! But it's certainly within walking distance of Broadway shows and Lincoln Center symphonies.

I believe the longest domestic flights in Russia are operated between Moscow and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with SVO-PKC coming in at 4,203 statute miles.

However, the longest operating domestic flight is CDG-RUN at 5,809 statute miles. That's a solid 800+ miles longer than the 4,983 statue miles of HNL-JFK.

I dont think anyone is doubting this service will fill during the summer especially with the insane fares they were offering. Its gonna be the fall and spring that might be the real test. The jetblue partnership seems like it made JFK the spot they wanted to try but im waiting to see how the bookings are in the off season and after these low introductory fares.

Effective June 5, JetBlue's TrueBlue members can accrue one point for every two miles flown on eligible Hawaiian-operated flights, while HawaiianMiles members will be able to earn miles on eligible JetBlue-operated flights on a mile-for-mile basis

I'd be surprised if HA has trouble convincing people from New York to fly to Hawaii during the winter. Snow is overrated anyway.

I read today that analysts are saying that if the JFK flight does well, other East Coast cities would be considered too, like BOS (because their partner B6 has a hub here). But BOS-HNL is only about 20 PDEW from what I've heard, IAD-HNL already has UA, ATL-HNL already has DL, and I don't see how MIA-HNL could be any bigger than BOS-HNL. But maybe they know something that we don't?

I wonder why HA doesn't try to compete with those carriers on those routes? MAybe they think that there won't be enough demand to make the flight profitable?

I won a bottle of Hawaiian hooch once for guessing the closest time, to the minute the flight would reach its halfway point from LAX-HNL. It should be interesting to calculate what the halfway point will be from JFK. An hour to an hour and a half off the left coast.

Quoting je89_w (Reply 18):

That's about right westbound I picked up some family friends in HNL who flew CO from EWR-HNL. It was right at 11 hours non-stop. I actually guessed the right metal as the flight flew over HNL out over Barbers Point; turn back towards the airport and land. As a crow flies the long final had to be a good 15 miles.

Doubt it. There's actually considerably more distance over the continent than over the ocean. My crude estimate puts the halfway point somewhere over eastern California or Nevada.

Correct, it should be over north central California. SMF and E36 (Georgetown Airport in California) both lie on the great circle route between JFK and HNL. JFK-SMF is longer than SMF-HNL, but JFK-E36 is shorter than E36-HNL. Based on that, the midpoint should be pretty close to Roseville, CA off to the northeast of Sacramento.

HA should do OK out of JFK. I don't think the yields will be that great .....if it works we might see IAD next. That might work for J loads....lots of foreign dignitaries that might be tempted to by a J class ticket for a long weekend.

Interestingly the GC path from ORD to HNL passes almost directly over the runway intersection at SFO. Not sure how far off JFK is, but they will also overfly the Bay Area on a GC route, most likely.

As I recall the winning answer was time based to the closest minute and not so much the actual geographical location a couple of other variables existed; airspeed, routing, deviations for weather if bad weather exist etc. The flight deck announced average air speed and routing over the public address system and wanted to know at what time would we reach the halfway point. I knew the routing metric was a throw away designed to confuse the pax as there was no land reference after we departed LAX and flew out over the Catalina Islands. The halfway point should be a little easier for the JFK-HNL in that there is a land reference.

He doesn't know anything we don't, he's just throwing a random city out there based on a JetBlue codeshare announcement. He might as well have said MCOHNL (which is bigger than BOSHNL or MIAHNL); still not happening.

I don't think so. Right after HA announced JFK-HNL, UA announced IAD-HNL which is starting soon. I don't see IAD having enough traffic for more than 1X per day to HNL N/S. UA has hub feed there and has the resources to fight off HA if they enter the IAD-HNL market.

For those who desire the 11 hour non-stop there is a lot military traffic which flies to the HNL from the greater Washington D.C. area Given IAD geographical location to all of military branches headquarters, the Pentagon and the commutable military bases in the area.

All five branches of the Armed Services are represented with considerable force on Oahu. In fact HNL shares its runway with Hickam AFB.

I flew EWR-HNL non-stop; given a choice I told myself never again. Thereafter I opted to break my trip with a stop on the left coast.

I guess everyone has to make that decision for himself. I very much prefer nonstops, I don't care how long they are. And NYC-HNL isn't so bad. I've flown NYC-TLV many times - after a nonstop, I still feel completely refreshed and ready for a full day. When I've made a stop in Europe, I feel completely exhausted when I arrive at my destination. In fact, I don't think I would've chosen a Hawaian vacation unless I could have taken a nonstop - and HA's fare was very reasonable.

He doesn't know anything we don't, he's just throwing a random city out there based on a JetBlue codeshare announcement. He might as well have said MCOHNL (which is bigger than BOSHNL or MIAHNL); still not happening.

No, the author doesn't know anything we don't. I wouldn't expect him to. But he said that analysts are saying that BOS-HNL would be a possibility. If these are analysts like the Boyd Group, for example, these people would have more insight into this. He didn't say who these analysts are though...

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but can't you already do this on UA or AA via ORD?

Best of luck to Hawaiian!

AA doesn't factor into many of those markets in a significant way. However, you're right that UA shows up with one-stops through EWR, IAD, and ORD. ORD's the least frequent. Hawaiian/B6 does seem to be pushing one-stop prices down a bit, though, and I think that's significant, although it's hard for me to go back in time and see how much of a premium there was for that. Certainly if the price is close, what you get is better on B6/HA than UA, especially since they're using the A330. You're right, though, there's not really novelty here, just better competition.
