MD-11's For Ups?

To all: There is an interesting article in today's WSJ regarding a [pending] deal between Boeing and UPS to convert up to 30 MD-11's to freighter config, with possible 747 conversions later.

Any thoughts on where the MD's may come from? KLM,
Delta, storage?

The MD-11 may not be a good aircraft in terms of handling, but its sure a great plane to look at. Can you imagine a UPS MD-11 !!!! Wow

Seattle, Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co. is close to an agreement to supply used jumbo jets to United Parcel Service Inc. in an order valued at as much as $1.5 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unidentified industry officials.

Boeing would convert as many as 30 used MD-11 passenger planes into cargo aircraft to be delivered over the next five or six years, the paper said. As part of a second phase, the companies are talking about converting some 747 passenger planes, the paper said.

UPS Pilot- China Southern? I thought the only Mainland Chinese airline to fly the MD-11 was China Eastern- and most of their MD-11s have already been converted to freighters...

China Southern (CZ) dont have any MD-11'S OR 747'S !!

China Eastern only has 2 freighters one being convereted.

The original order looks to be 13 aircraft all equipped with PW 4460 engines with options for 20-22 more coming from JAL and China Eastern. The deal hasn't been signed yet but looks to take place before years end to gain additional lift for China

The China Eastern MD-11's are going to China Cargo Airlines. China Eastern will not operate freighters anymore.

Is it me or does it seem like UPS copys everything Fedex does? Airbus's now MD 11's. If they get the extra china slots they should put a 747 on them flights anyway.The MD 11 is a great freighter....
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

So, that's ten (being the JAL ones) - so where do the other 20 come from. Delta has 15, CAL 4 and KLM, 10 - although KLM uses CF6-80s. Still, as its 757 experience suggests, it can use two different engines if needs be.

To all: Perhaps Boeing will use the conversion of existing MD11/742 aircraft to bridge the time frame from now till the 747x freighter is available assumimg, of course, that UPS orders the variant.

There has been considerable discussion as well as statements from Boeing executives that the freight companies are in the forefront of 747x launch activity.

As an aside, Boeing can also use the prospect of purchasing used a/c (757/767, MD11, 742)for conversion as an incentive to possibly clinch a deal with prospective customers which may be sitting on the fence.

Any thoughts?

China Eastern is going to supply the other 3. I've heard the intial order was for 13 MD-11's. I also heard that China Eastern was going to hold on to their other 3 MD-11 freighters.
The other 20 to 25 are options!

The MD-11 is an excellent cargo aircraft. Too bad BA is stopping its production. Maybe a 777 cargo version is in the works?

My thoughts exactly. I'm especially curious as to what Boeing could do with NW and KLM. At NW, the DC-10's could be put into the MD-10 conversion program, then sold to FedEx, if they want them, or another operator. The same applies to KLM, only their MD-11s could go to UPS, or FedEx, for that matter.

However, as we've already seen, Boeing isn't playing hard ball in this arena. I was quite shocked when Boeing announced the 757 deal with BA and DHL, then BA turned around and ordered the A318. I had assumed Boeing had made an arrangement where they would buy BA's 757's only if BA bought the 717. But I guess it puts Boeing in a diffucult situation, where they have to say no to a lot of business (DHL) and especially to a loyal customer (BA).

KLM has announced that it is looking for an aircraft to replace its 747 Classics/MD-11s and, eventually, its 767-300s, so the ability to trade in their MD-11s may be part of a deal that would see KLM getting a large number of 777s and give Boeing an advantage over Airbus, which is trying very hard to convince KLM to buy models in its A330/340 series. Alitalia is in a similar position, and some of its MD-11s are "Combi" models. JAL and Delta are now focusing on 777 acquisitions and will probably, eventually, look to dispose of their MD-11 fleets. In total, that is about 45 aircraft, so an adequate supply is available for this program. Look for Boeing to purchase MD-11 from airlines that agree to order 777 at the same time- a great deal for Boeing. I hope this happens.
