TWA JFK-CDG Flight 924/925

Fri Oct 13, 2000 10:45 pm

Trans World Airlines will cease daily nonstop service from JFK to Lisbon and to Milan/Malpensa in January 2001. This leaves the Paris flight, which is flown on
a daily basis with a 767-200 and the Tel Aviv, Cairo, and Riyadh services. Will
TWA retain the Paris flight? Why not sell the route?

TWA has no feed at JFK. The Paris flight is historical in significance to the air-
line but that isn't really worth keeping. There is a lot of competition to Paris,
with AA flying twice daily, AF and DL also offering multiple frequencies, and
Continental has 777 and soon 767-400 service from EWR.

Should TWA keep this now oddball route or drop it?

TWA will also start STL -FRA service and CDG is also supported with STL-CDG. It is likely CDG will stay. Also do not forget the codeshare service offered by RJ with the TW code to AMS from ORD and JFK and KU operated service to FRA and LHR from JFK.

Yes, I know about the STL service, but I am asking about the CDG flight from JFK. The RJ and KU code shares are separate and don't really have much to do
with the CDG flight.

Trust me, TW doesn't need feed to get people aboard a JFK-CDG flight. I'm thinking that TW is holding on to the route because US and France aren't Open Skies yet, while Spain and Italy are. So, if TW were say in 2003 ever to get back into transatlantic flying (from JFK) they'd be able to get into it quickly.

However, CoEWR, the question really is, is the flight profitable? Can TW sell tickets at a high enough price to a large enough amount of people to keep the flight going? If the answer is yes than TW wil be plowing the Parisian skys for sometime. If the answer is no, than au revoir Paris!

I obviously don't know if the route is profitale, but it was over 700f cheaper to fly them than anybody else. Mind you while the leisure fares aren't bad, for business they're crazy.

TWA will keep the JFK-CDG to maintain some international presence, and is likely to selectively re-introduce service to other European destinations in the future, when the fare deal with Icahn is over with. JFK-CDG is a great route, and makes money for the airline.
