Did FRG Ever Have Commercial Service?

Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:05 am

Living a few miles away from FRG, I always wonder why it has a small but still usable terminal if the only flights are the charter flights to ACY? It made me wonder if FRG ever actually had scheduled flights. If not, what is the possibility of over having service there or have any airlines ever looked into serving Farmingdale? I don't want to sound like just another guy dreaming about a GA airfield having scheduled flights, but the fact that there is a functioning terminal makes me wonder. Runways cannot be an issue because we see regular sports charters including MANY Miami Air 738s and Air Canada a319s and a320s, plus the ocassional DL a319. Plus, we have hosted Air Force 2 (a 752, for those who don't know).

Yes they did. For a brief period of time they had NW Airlink service to BOS and in the 1980s they had service on CO Express and Cosmopolitan Airlines as well. Do you live in NY? I live in Oceanside and I'm graduating from SUNY Farmingdale at the end of the month.

Due to noise abatemnent and the neighboring residents, they have been fighting forever to keep commercial flights and large jets out of FRG. B6 has chartered for Hofstra sports teams many a time out of Sheltair's facility. Unfortunately you will probablly never see FRG expand to more than what it is now.

If they are fighting to keep large jets out of FRG they arent doing a good job. Large bizjets and some commercial charters come over my house multiple times a day and it is increasing. Im not complaining though.

I remember flying Piper Cubs and Cessna 150s out of Zahn's airport, located immediately south of the Southern State Parkway from FRG. The patterns dodged each other. FRG was a private field mostly back then, the site of the Republic Aircraft manufacturing facility, later acquired by Grumman IIRC.

I am impressed with how much FRG has rebounded into a commercial airport over the last 20 years.

It wasn't that long ago that they were building shopping malls almost on the runway and most of the place had the air of an airport that has seen better days under a defunct aircraft company

The place is really thriving now in the GA market and has found its place in the NYC area

My wife worked for an outfit called Atlantic Express back in the early 80's. They operated Swearingen Metros from FRG to BOS and ALB. Don't believe they lasted a year though.

Their only timetables on the Timetableimages.com site are dated 1983 so that was probably their year.

Route map April 1983.

NW Airlink operated from May to October 1993.

I earned my PPL at FRG, flying back in the late 70s and early 80s. In the traffic pattern for 32, we had to stay north of the Southern State Parkway, with a dogleg to final, rolling out over the numbers. I never flew out of Zahn's, but have a friend who did around that time.

I've been to a few airport commission meetings, and there is one lady - who may very well have lived there when Republic was turning out F-84s - who grills the board about noise every month. Yes, there is extensive business jet traffic, and plenty of sports charters, between the Islanders and local college teams, but don't expect scheduled service of any consequence any time soon.

The Republic Airport Historical Society (yes, I'm a member) web site has some interesting information about the history of FRG.

I remember this. In fact, I was actually booked to fly BOS-FRG on a Dornier at one point (probably around Sept 93), but for whatever reason changed my plans and took one of the shuttles to LGA instead. I've always kicked myself for that, because before I had another chance to try the flight it got cancelled, and I haven't had an opportunity to fly into FRG or take a Do 228 again!

The airport has been more and more populated with larger charters, absolutely. These are the reasons the neighbors keep shooting down any proposals to make the airport bigger and to develope on undeveloped parcels that are on the field ie; new FBO's or Terminal expansions keep getting shot down.

What I never understood is, if you buy a house near an airport, don't you know in advance that there might be a bit of a noise issue?    Or do they figure it out afterward.

People will always complain about something. Problem with the United States in 2012 is that we listen to, and give life to, the most ridiculous complaints. That is why:

1. Nothing really gets done
2. Everything that does get done is ridiculously expensive
3. Everything is a slow, drawn out process

I don't get it either. I remember a few years ago Suffolk County was working to make that area a major business hub and it got shot down by local residents. It does hurt the development of most things.

This is a bit off topic, but isnt this the reason AA stopped flying Mad-Dogs into JFK?

Ah Helen! I went to the April meeting with my Airport Planning class and basically answered her questions on behalf of the RAC. She is a former RAC member-gone-NIMBY. Has no idea what she is talking about either.
