I remember flying Piper Cubs and Cessna 150s out of Zahn's airport...
I earned my PPL at FRG
, flying back in the late 70s and early 80s. In the traffic pattern for 32, we had to stay north of the Southern State Parkway, with a dogleg to final, rolling out over the numbers. I never flew out of Zahn's, but have a friend who did around that time.
I've been to a few airport commission meetings, and there is one lady - who may very well have lived there when Republic was turning out F-84s - who grills the board about noise every month. Yes, there is extensive business jet traffic, and plenty of sports charters, between the Islanders and local college teams, but don't expect scheduled service of any consequence any time soon.
The Republic Airport Historical Society (yes, I'm a member) web site has some interesting information about the history of FRG
