United First Winglet 767-300 Enters Service

Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:50 pm

United first winglet 767-300 N674UA is back in the US from its Hong Kong conversion today.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...5/history/20120609/0100Z/VHHH/KORD

Besides winglets, the former domestic configuration aircraft is quipped with a new 2 class premium configuration featuring the Continental style BE Aerospace Diamond lie-flat seat.

For anyone looking to catch it, the routing for the next few days is as follows:

10June
UA499 ORD-SFO 1507-1738

11June
UA223 SFO-ORD 0608-1209
UA908 ORD-AMS 1813-0930

12June
UA909 AMS-ORD 1115-1315

Now need some photos for the DB....

I saw her today at ORD. She was parked at gate M1 of the international terminal. She arrived from HKG as UA6865.

I was too far away to take a picture...   The winglets look quite nice on her!

United.com still shows only overhead screens available for IFE. I'm sure this isn't true for the C cabin, but what about Y?

Really?? Define that part of UA.

PMUA yes, but every single aisle PMCO aircraft was equipped with wing-lets well before this merger of equals took place.

Will be amusing if UA gets all their 763s wingletted before AA does (and AA has a 3 year head start!).

In fairness, pre-merger United was a more financially conservative company, and the business case for winglets did not fit well into its expected financial ROI timeframes. CO on the other hand was more willing to devote cash upfront, and wait years for the payback.

The now combined company has taken a more blended view - for example the UA 757s will remain without winglets, while a portion of the 763 fleet as we can see are getting them. Anyhow keep your eyes open - more such projects are on the way at the new company.

To be fair, isn't the expected payback with $100/bbl oil something like 18-24 months with their utilization? I'm pretty sure I read that here on a.net during the last oil run-up in 2007-8.

The business case is quite complex - not a straight cost calculation of the winglet kit, installation and downtime

There are multiple other factors at play such as consideration of gate adjustments/loss at hubs which was a issue especially at ORD for example, age of aircraft, ownership (lease vs own), etc.

So as I said - pre-merger UA was quite conservative with cash outlay, and it was hard for them to justify projects that generate positive NPV within the established at hand financial assumptions.

Saw N674UA in HKG 2 months ago, already with the winglets. Looks sharp. With the new premium configuration, it seems like this former domestic B763 will now see international routes from now on. Having said that, what aircraft will UA send to HNL in place of these domestic B763s, once all of them receive the new cabin mod and winglets?

I'm sure they will continue to rotate through Hawaii, just not as often. The ETOPS 753s will more than likely continue backfilling for capacity as they are doing now during the retrofit.

Why is the conversion being done in HKG? Certainly APB has a more convenient location stateside? What happened to MCO?

That is where CO has been doing their 777s and now 767s retrofits. Since these PMUA 767-300s are getting the "Continental Treatment" then I'm guessing it would make sense to do them there since all the stuff for inside the plane is there plus I'm sure it is a heck of a lot cheaper.

United's inept social media/marketing department probably won't have any sort of acknowledgment of the EIS of the retrofitted 67E.

Delta, on the other hand, would have photos, professional video productions, blog posts and all sorts of goodies to promote the aircraft. Sadly, UAL does not have a clue in this regard.

As mentioned above CO widebody overhauls are done in HKG. In addition to the winglet install the aircraft had a heavy check performed and also all the cabin refit.

But didn't DL go a bit far when the ferried a widebody TATL RT to show of the new slanted widget paint scheme?

The fact is these aircraft are getting mods that virtually match already existing 764 interiors. Yes, let's see the photos and its exciting to us on Anet, but the public flying International routes may not see much differnence from current equipment unless its an upgrade from a 752.

Quoting LAXintl (Reply 11):

Let's hope so, but a replacement aircraft into mod has not flown to HKG. These mods should take at least as long as the 764 lie flat/E+ mod, which are running 6 weeks each (quickest was 5.5 weeks). With two lines, that's a minimum of 33 weeks to do 12 of 13 remaining units. If they were in HKG today, my math says it would take until the end of January 2013 and the last unit would not be completed.

In general, it looks like the mod lines on the PMCO equipment are running behind and it's Summer when cash is to be made. I'm not a pessimist, but

735 are getting done E+ quickly.
73G fleet seems stalled at about 50% of the domestic fleet.
738: 18 need mid lavs removed & E+, 10 more need DTV/E+ and 3 more need E+.
739: 11 need DTV/E+ while 1 is awaiting E+.
753: E+ underway, but it could be the non-ETOPS units are being converted to ETOPS along with E+, so it could be a while as 16 of 21 need E+.
772: E+ has not begun
764: only 3 left for lie fl;at/E+, but mod line could be reduced from 2 to 1 or held up for Summer.

They are allotting just under 4-weeks for each one. While the first one slipped badly due to problems integrating the IFE, I suspect the rest should be smoother.

OK, looking at the 764 vs. 763 conversion, it appears the 764 may be a bit more tricky as they are adding/removing more bathrooms vs,. the 763. Are the 763s getting new overheads, which could add time?

Maybe if they get enough workers and a system going, it could be cone in 4 weeks. At 4 weeks each, without any glitches, they could get 12 of 13 done by the middle of Dec. with 2 mod lines. It would take 3.33 weeks each to meet Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure about that, but it is true that Delta is miles and miles ahead of United when it comes to using social networking as a way to interface with travelers to drive loyalty and improve customer service. UA simply does not get it.

The photos above is of one of these planes. The domestics ones aka Gettobirds are the one being completely updated to the new layout. I suspect thou once they are all done, overseas they will all go except for hub to hub. One of the few CO things I didn't like. Wide bodies almost all overseas, but I digress they are in business to make money.

She looks great, well done UA.

And I have to say I just love 75s and 76s with winglets

Looks beautiful! The APB blended winglet looks particularly great on CO's livery.

It probably has something to do with the tail and underbelly being "heavier" looking than the plain front. The winglets distribute the livery... if that makes any sense. The same effect happes with DL. Or I'm just crazy..

Huge improvement, I wish they would do this to all of UA's 763s but alas they're probably going to be replaced by 787s before too long. When these conversions are complete UA will have additional international lift capabilities, even after accounting for the 762 retirements. Hopefully some will replace 757s on Trans-Atlantic from EWR (AMS, OSL, ARN, MAD, BCN, CDG in particular).

I flew this bird IAH-SFO before she cocooned...this is a huuuuuuuge improvement and it looks like there won't be nearly as many onboard carry-on issues anymore.

Looks nice but I still don't understand why they kept the god awful CO seat patterns. I just flew UA and in the safety videos for this month Smisek is sitting in Y on an IPTE 777 with the new seats. This airlines branding is all screwed up.

A lot of people really like the CO seat patterns, it's just a matter of preference. And no, the airlines branding is not all screwed up.
