LH 747-8i Y Class Seat Width 20.07 Inches?

Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:40 pm

I noticed on SeatGuru that the seat width in Y on the LH 747-8i is 20.07 inches. Their other 747s are in line with other airlines with a seat width of 17.5 inches. Their 747-400s are 3x4x3 as are their 747-8is. The Boeing site shows the cabin interior width for the 747-400 as 20 feet and 20.1 feet for the 747-8i. So, the question is two fold: is 20.07 inches accurate, and if so, how did Lufthansa pull this off?

It is a mistake on the part of SeatGuru. (All the carriers I can think of) only fit 2+3+2 on the main deck of a 747 with 20" seat cushion widths.

This is a mistake. How can an economy class seat be 20 ins wide when business class seats (eg BA's Club World seating) is also 20 ins wide ?

How would adding 2.5" a seat make the cabin 3 seats narrower? For 7 seats that's only an extra 17.5".

Yes, you can do 2+4+2 with 20" seats (armrest to armrest) with a 21" aisle per the Boeing ACAP. And some Business Class products (like BA Club World and UA Global Business) do 2+4+2 (though perhaps with narrower aisles).

Back when it was just seats in a row, I'm only aware of it being 2+3+2 for Business Class on the main deck with a 20-21" seat and 24" aisles (sans TWA, which went 2+2+2 with ~32" aisles).

SeatGuru information on seat width is best ignored. It's full of inaccurate and inconsistent information. Seat widths are measured different ways by various carriers and seat manufacturers. For example, does the seat width include only the cushion or also the width of the armrests and the gap between the seat cushions?

Well it's not all bogus, as I do take a tape measure with me for the flights I am on so I stand by the data I submit.

(That being said, I only fly Star Alliance and AS).

I often correct Seat Guru on inaccuracies of some Air Canada seat charts. To date, they have all been ignored, making a lot of he AC seat charts inaccurate.

This being the case, I have to assume most of what is on Seat Guru is inaccurate.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I assume it's whatever isn't under the armrest..

It is largely inaccurate, sadly. It started out as a GREAT website, but clearly has devolved into them cutting and pasting recommendations based on any seat that is within "X" inches of a lavatory door, etc.
There's virtually no useful information on the site anymore at all- the only things they tell you are which seats are close to lavs or galleys, which any idiot can figure out on their own.
Their one golden goose was previously information about which rows have BLOCKED/PLUGGED windows. But even this information is no longer accurate.

I too have submitted information (on several occasions), received a notification that my observation was noted -- and nothing more -- no change to anything!

Last time I looked (1 minute ago!!) they still showed DL's A320's with 16 in F! (amongst many other things, such as the layout for the MD-90's with 12 seats in F, yet the summary at the top states 16 in F!).
I love to fly, and it shows!

SeatGuru absolutely does not care about feedback from flyers. They also make comments about seats based purely on the seatmap, not on actual experience.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

LH website indicates:
"On long-haul routes a seat cushion width of over 40 cm, as well as the individually adjustable headrests on every seat, ensure your comfort."
40 cm = 15.7" !
