B-29 At BDL Today (6/10/12)?!

Sun Jun 10, 2012 8:30 pm

Am waiting to board WN 356 to BWI and just saw (and heard) what appeared to be a vintage B-29 thunder away from runway 15. Anyone have any details? I'll try to grab a pic if time and sight lines permit.

You would have had the B-24 Diamond Lil there too if she didn't have a nose gear collapse 2 weeks ago at CLT.

Caught a pic while lining up to board but am having trouble adding it to my profile (even after deleting a bunch of old pics). Also grabbed a nice pic of an anvil-topped thunderstorm over NYC while heading down the Atlantic coast. I'll stop short of turning this into a TR, but will mention that we rocketed up to FL340 during our quick flight (normal cruise is FL250) and ended up looping around Long Island and the Jersey Shore to avoid the weather. The F/O asked the FAs to be seated no fewer than three times due to the "rough air" which IMO, never exceeded continuous light chop.

Does anyone know how often the B-29 takes flight? I've been up to BDL a bunch of times and am aware of the museum but have never seen the thing airborne. It was pretty active throughout the weekend, but at

Indeed there is a museum at KBDL, but the flying B-29 is not theirs, it's a visitor.

See link above, the visitor is Fifi from the "Commemorative" Air Force.
Inspiration, move me brightly!

I could be totally wrong, but I could swear that I saw a B-29 flying over Marietta, Georgia this weekend. It was not up close and personal, but that aircraft has a very distinctive tail, and I saw a B-29 tail! I know there is a dead one sitting on the grass on HWY 41, at Dobbins, but this machine, 4 propellers, very strange aircraft noise like I've never hear, and that distinctive tail was in the air. I assumed it was a hallucination or misinterpretation on my part, but now that this comment has been posted, maybe I wasn't crazy. Like I said, I know that I saw that very broad, very round tail, and I did not recognize the engine buzz (and I've never seen a B-29 flying before.) Comments? Do I need to see my ophthalmologist?

There is only one flying B-29 at present, and it was in Connecticut this weekend.

For clarification, the New England Air Museum does have a very nice B-29 "Jack's Hack" in its collection; that plane is not in flying condition. The flying plane is the Commemorative Air Force's "Fifi" and was in town on behalf of the museum.

Not gonna call you a liar or blind, but the closest to the ATL area that the B-29 has been in the past couple weeks at least on its scheduled tour was CLT during Memorial Day Weekend. It could have made a stop at Dobbins AFB though passing through, but it wouldn't have been there offering rides. You sure you didn't see a B-17 from a distance, there are 9 of them still flying in the U.S. and I believe one is based in Georgia.

The CAF's 'FiFi' the world's only operational B-29 and is flown on special occasions, BDL was very fortunate to see this rare bird. BTW, check out these great shots of "FiFi" from Houston based photographer, Chris Ebdon

I'm not certain what I saw, but it sure as hell was neither a 747 nor the Roswell flying saucer. It was big, it had 4 propeller engines, it had a piston engine noise that I've never hear before, and the tail was big and rounded. And it was flying toward Dobbins. Just say'in. It kind of gives you some respect/perspective regarding people who see "UFOs". This clearly is a UFO, albeit with propellers and a vertical tail.

The B-29 is a beautiful bird.

Every time I see a B-29, I am filled with sadness remembering the tragic story of the Kee Bird.

Was Kermit Week's B-29 ever flyable? I know it was not after Andrew.

"Fifi" was doing TOLs (apparently "for-fee" flights) on Saturday and scaring the crap out of my brother-in-law's neighbors in the process (their development is about 2 miles abeam of the longest runway at KBDL). I saw her depart once and was pretty impressed with its departure speed, as well as the ferocious noise it put out. Cool stuff.

Here's the pic I hastily managed to snap with my iPhone while lined up to board at gate B4. Apologies for the reflective glare.

Here's FiFi N529B on FlightAware. Obviously not all flights are listed- probably flown VFR without filed flight plans:

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

I live 5nm downwind from Dobbins. Been seeing P3s, Hercs for going on 25 years. Nope, wasn't a P3. Didn't look like one, didn't sound like one, didn't have the tail stinger like one. But it did have wings, no sweep, so that rules out the flying saucer. If it wasn't the B29, the only thing else would have been a B17. Go figure.
