Farewell JAL MD-90 31/05/2012 JA8066?

Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:11 am

Hello fellow's

I was a little surprised to see the text on this photo and read the remarks "Farewell MD-90" Sorry if has been posted lately but didn't find anything that JAL has finished with there MD-90's. Or is this the first one to leave the fleet? According to
airfleets.net there are still 10 other's in service (not including JA8066).

When was this announced? And with what they have been replaced? Does anybody know where the MD-90's are heading, as it's just under 16 years old!?

So farewell JAL MD-90....

Looking at the first picture, it is probably safe to assume that JA8066 was the last MD-90 to go. Didn't realize they all left the fleet so quickly (and quietly)!

I believe most of them left the fleet for DL, as reported in other threads

They are all going to Delta by next year. They received already a handful but the fact JAL parked the remaining 10 or so now already, also caught me by surprise. Luckily I flew on one in november (Hiroshima-Haneda).
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

No, they haven't gone yet. They will still be flying till the end of this month at least. My guess is that the photo caption refers to the final MD-90 flight (on the last day of the month, note) out of Izumo. They are being phased out route by route. There is still one daily rotation on my HIJ-HND route but from July it's 737s all the way down.

Shame. I've really enjoyed them.

I'm not surprised they're going this because from a maintenance and crew training point of view, the MD-90's are oddballs in JL's fleet. That's why they're being sold to DL--that airline already has a large MD-90 fleet, and as such maintenance and crew training are far less of an issue.

DL seems to be the retirement home for all DC-9 derivatives!
