ZK To Rebid EAS Cities Out Of MSP!

Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:07 pm

Also per DOT filing, due to operational issues as well as ticketing issues, ZK has asked the DOT to rebid service to Brainerd, MN (BRD), International Falls, MN (INL) Iron Mountain, Michigan (IMT) and Rhinelander, WI (RHI).

Some issues ZK is facing in MSP is lack of aircraft and crews, space issues with the gates in MSP as well as ticketing/pricing issues between DL and ZK.

Wonder who will bid these cities? Also, I don't think DL will be happy to continue to operate CRJs on these routes, while continuing to loose money on them!

Back when ZK took on the Montana Cities from Big Sky, they had the same problem.

Obviously they don't have the equipment to take on these new markets, then again they may have some more
equipment available, as OO has bid to replace them on the Laramie-Denver and Worland Denver runs. OO wants to use EMB120's as United Express.

I think that we can all pretty much agree that now and going forward the lack of a proper small aircraft will hinder any air service to a lot of small communities. And it seems that there are none new being produced, or even on the drawing boards.

It's pretty amazing the amount of utility and endurance that ZK has gotten out of their birds.

I think that the larger EAS markets will pick up 50 seat RJ service and those in the 19 seat market will fall down to something like a 402/208 carrier, like Cape Air, Pacific Wings or Seaport. Tecnam is working on a 402 replacement for Cape Air, which should help out a bunch.

Well, yes and no! Their are other current alternatives out on the market right now, including more 1900s, E120s and even S340s, but the problem is price! ZK does not want (nor can really afford) to pay going rates on more of these types of planes. Last count, there are close to 15 or so 1900s parked all over the country that ZK could use, however maintenance records and lease rates seem to be the issue with them. Also, even if ZK got more 1900s (or any plane for that matter) finding crews to fly them will be even tougher, especially once the 1500 hr (ATP) rule goes into effect!

Once again, ZK rapidly expanded without thinking it through and in the end the communities are the ones who suffer! Hopefully these cities can retain some decent carriers to continue serving them!

I questioned from the start how they intended to serve all of these cities without taking anymore airplanes. It shouldn't be a shock that they can't afford to serve all of these markets. The DOT should take this into consideration in the future when ZK decides to bid on EAS routes. The only good thing about this is that there are still 5 markets that need an airline so it should be feasible for another small airline to bid an all or none type of deal.

i believe the ticketing issues originate with Delta as it appears they have inhibited their discount fares from being combinable with ZK's local fares so only their full fares are "end -on-end" qualified which makes for a non competiuvie pricing structure out of these cities when single ticketing is desired. I discussed this same issue with QR/UA thru ticketing it appears to be an increasing problem industry wide

I thought BRD was one of the markets DL wanted to keep in-house.

Nope, BRD was originally dropped by DL, picked up by ZK, before they dropped it again! You might be thinking of Bemidji, which will stay with Delta!

I thought they were keeping both - I remember BJI. I guess BJI is a better performer, and DL feels maybe BRD is just too close and many people will just drive the 2.5 hours.

I flew DL out of BJI back in April and was amazed at how many people were using the service. I also heard DL can sometimes run CRJ-900's there during the summer. Can anyone confirm?
