Spirit LGA-MYR Equipment

Thu Jun 14, 2012 2:41 am

Last year, Spirit had two daily flights (a319s) from LGA to MYR and three in th esummer, two of which being a320s. This year, they never returned the a320 to the route, nor did they reinstate the third daily flight. What is their strategy? I see that now there is a third daily flight on their website, but it goes through ORD. Also, it cannot be that they are not filling the flights. The last few times I've flown this route, they have been overbooked by at least five passengers (Which is the main cause for most of the delays). What is their strategy for this route? They have jacked up their prices and cut capacity by about 200 passengers, possibly thinking that, if there is a demand, people woudl pay more? Anybody have any insight?

Hm, this is strange. I thought there would be a rather large amount of New Yorkers trying to escape to the great Grand Strand. It is a wonderful place, and not over priced like other well known vacation spots. But anyways

Whenever I fly through MYR NK's gates always seems full of passengers, I usually can not find a seat just scanning the area.

Is NK the largest operator out of MYR? I always hear "Spirit Airlines is pleased/welcomed to announce flight ____ has arrived/is going to start boarding _____ from ____"

That's what confuses me too!

That's why we bought a place there and not Florida.

Yupp. They have 13 non-stop destinations from MYR (Granted about 8 or 9 of them are seasonal and 5 or 6 of THEM are not daily), but still impressive.

I think this year it has to do more with lack of aircraft available ..... they have actually been subcontracting some of their flying to someone else (IIRC, they have a 737-400 running some of the FLL-LGA runs the past week)..

Ooh. Are they taking delivery of any new aircraft in the near future? They do have lots of 320s on order.

Also, you are right about that

Didn't they have an Omni Air 757 running these flights a few weeks ago?

Wow, that's bizarre. On the other hand, since the A320 features pre-reclined seats for your convenience and a luxurious 28" of seat pitch, perhaps most passengers didn't mind the change.

The last aircraft to arrive on the property was N615NK (ln 5159), which was ferried TLS-YYR-FLL on Tuesday. The last aircraft to enter revenue service was N614NK (ln 5132) on June 5th.

Ah... I saw that in the schedule for July and thought it was a mistake. I assumed that it was supposed to be one of the A321s.

Who is operating it? Direct Air?
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Throw darts at a board to determine routes and frequencies...then pull most of them after six months to a year.

Xtra Airways. Direct Air was a "virtual" airline that would charter other airlines to operate their flights on their behalf, they didn't have any of their own airplanes.

Also keep in mind that they have only 11 weekday slots out of LGA and the addition of DFW used one of these.

But this route has been around since they operated DC-9's.

Pulling them if they're not making money makes perfect sense to me.

Spirit's been in the MYR market for a while, and this summer they're picking up some of the lift Direct Air provided before it collapsed.

Sowouldn't you think they would purposely focus on putting the larger aircraft on the route or adding the third daily flight? Even if with a chartered aircraft?

I would imagine that Spirit would want to keep use of chartered aircraft to an absolute minimum, since I doubt they're making much (if any) of a profit on those flights.

It's not like them to expand without first having the resources for it, so my guess is an unforeseen loss in availability of an aircraft. Either one went tech and it's something that's going to take a few weeks to repair, or perhaps one of the new aircraft was delayed either in delivery or in entrance to service.

588NK has gone tech in DTW for some reason (the reason Omni Air is flying the 757 for them right now), and I believe they have received 615NK recently but it is not on line yet..

My mother came up to visit late last month and used Spirit from FLL to LGA. one day before she was to go back, Spirit called her and asked if she would be willing to change her flight from a Sunday Afternoon to an early AM flight on a Monday from LGA in exchange for a free flight for another date. I got on the phone to talk to the customer service rep and asked why they were doing that? they said that they were going to substitute the usual 200 seat aircraft with a smaller 170 seater. I found it odd since I had thought that Spirit had replaced all of their A321s, but apparently they have 2 left in the fleet. I told her to take it. Hey, she got a free flight out of it! But this all makes sense now that they have a shortage of aircrafts to fill their schedule.

This is the first time I have ever heard of NK having a VALID reason that they overbooked a flit. In the end of May, I was flying from LGA to MYR on n508nk and the first of our many delays was because they had overbooked the flight by one. After half an hour of bargaining with passengers to give up their seats, we we boarded. After everybody had taken their seat, it turned out that they had overbooked the flight by SEVEN people! Yhen, we had to wait an HOUR AND A HALF for a new flight mainfest (or at least htats what they told us). Bottom line, our 11:40am departure turned into sitting at the gate for 1hour and 50 minutes, and finally departing at 2:20pm! This is one of the many reasons I try to avoid NK as much as possible!

The overbooking isn't the problem. The delays and crappy condition of their planes is what I hate the most. The overbooking just tops it off.

This begs the question: Why do you keep flying Spirit, then?

(never mind the fact that any airline can experience overbooking-related delays, and most airlines have at least some aircraft with decrepit cabins)

You try to find a flight from NYC to MYR with paying 500 on United. Spirit is the only one I can afford. It is the only airline I have have been on that my goal is to just get to my destination, and not to enjoy the flight.

I don't wish they didn't exist, I just wish that another carrier would challenge them a little. They are like a spoiled teenage girl. They haven't had any challengers , therefore they think they can do what they want (i.e. charge too much, offer very little, and treat people like animals) Their flight attendants are rude and nasty and seem put out by anything you askcthem for. Their on time percentage cannot be very high, and I have friends and many family members who are forced to fly them because they are the only game in town, that would, and have, completely agreed with me. I am on a limited budget and I have to do what I have to do, even if that means fly an overall crappy airline. That doesn't mean I like them and it certainly doesn't mean that I don't have the right to criticize them.
