ATL Diversions At CSG 6/13/12

Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:00 am

I heard a ton of jets taking off tonight and looked on flightaware since it's not normal to have that many departures and it was unusual types departing also and saw that there were a ton of diversions that landed here. They were all destined for ATL and instead landed here from 2015 to 2105 local.

Anyone know what was up in ATL? There were not any wx issues then.

There were weather issue's. Still 50 min arrivals delays according to flightaware, and it's midnight there.

What weather? Radar is clear and all airports in the region are VFR.

There were huge wx issues -- as in I got to drive through them (I work close to KATL). There was a very large thunderstorm that came through and really made a mess of things. Hearing there were many diversions doesn't surprise me, as it was a VERY large thunderstorm system.

Not certain if it's related to ther weather, but DL116 DTW-ATL operated as a 744.

Hrmm. Don't know how I missed it. I've been in PHX for a long time and I guess I don't pay attention to the WX as much as I used to when I was here.

That's pretty cool. Those are some really pretty birds.

I was on the ramp at E30 around 2000 tonight when the sky unleashed hell. Pea sized hail, lightning on the field, and intense thunderstorms. It was nasty.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

Lots of weather today in ATL. Dad was delayed for a while until being rerouted through MSP.

One thunderstorm wrecked the operation tonight. The flight aware flight tracks are funny.. you zoom in and there's a single cell parked right over the airport.

Not only did it park itself right over the airport, it stayed there and over downtown for a while (I live in the highlands, east of mid-town). I didn't see it start calming down until almost 10PM, which certainly would put a damper on the evening rush.

We had about 12 diversions at HSV. Several Deltas and Air Trans. Apparently that storm didn't want to go anywhere last night...

Sounds like a monsoon storm.....but in the southeast. Looked pretty strong on the radar returns too.

I live several miles south of ATL and it rained fairly steadily for at least an hour and 15 minutes with several heavy downpours. I know in about that timeframe we got over an inch of rain. I don't know how long the rain continued to fall after it got dark.

Nothing really out of the ordinary though, just your typical Summer pop-up thunderstorm. Some are worst than others and I do remember working out on the ramp for AirTran and ASA during some pretty hellacious summer storms. Nothing like driving back from landside in a torrential downpour with lightning flashing so frequently it nearly blinds you momentarily.

CSG is one of a number of cities in the region that see ATL diversions during these sort of storms. HSV, MCN, VLD, ABY, GSP, AVL, CAE, CHA, MGM, and BHM are commonly used as diversion airports when ATL has bad weather. Depending on when the storm hits, you might see flights diverting to places like JAN, MEM, CLT, and GSO because the closer in diversion airports may already be maxed out or they may not have the runways to handle larger international a/c

I was on DL73 JFK-ATL yesterday (B76ER) that diverted to CVG. That was no fun..... especially since I was coming off DL217 DKR-JFK already..

Don't forget AGS. We diverted in a 777 there once a few summers back. Interesting experience.

Why to CVG ? That's kind-of crazy IMO. Couldn't it have gone to MEM by the time it turned around?

When the storm hit ATL they were still over an hour out and the close in diversion spots were getting crowded as this was an unforecasted/popup type storm and extra fuel wasn't in the original flight plans for yesterday. So flight crew and dispatcher figured CVG not only could handle the 767-300ER but not be too busy to quickly get the plane back on its way. Believe the block time in CVG was under 20 mins.

Yeah and it didn't move very fast. Cause a lot of wind-shear and closed the ramp for 45 minutes. Typical summer pop up storm and everyone is caught without alternate fuel.

It caused 40-50 mainline diversions alone, so guessing DCI probably had just as much if not more.

Don't forget TYS. They got a KLM MD-11 that night, along with a 757 and a total of about 6 diversions I believe.
Worked at: CV62, RJTA, KNLC, CV63, KNFL, OKAJ, KTRI, CV67, KMGE, KNQX, KVPS, KPIT, KCVG, KTYS, KATL

When I was recalling cities I remember seeing flights diverted to when I worked in the industry, I forgot about those two and was a complete oversight on my part. Just a bit of senility hitting me.....
