Pics Of Nearly Completed New Kraljevo Airport

Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:35 am

Hi all,

Recently I was lucky enough to get a private tour through the new, still unopened, Kraljevo Morava airport in central Serbia. The work is almost complete! The airport is sceduled to open later this month. I thought I'd share some pics of the progress. You might enjoy it. I did!

JAT announced a twice weekly BEG-IST-KVO-IST-BEG with AT7. Should start shortly, but ticket sales still haven't started. Does anybody here know more about when the first flights will commence? I'd really like to be on the first flight from KVO to IST!

All info you might have on the airport or future services is welcome!

Very nice. It kind of reminds me of pictures I've seen of the old Meigs Field terminal inside.

DutchBoeing,

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm glad there's a brand new airport in Serbia. I will definitely give it a try as soon as they start the flights since I was born in Kraljevo.

Here's a website with far more pics and videos, although it's mostly in Serbian.

And this one provides a different perspective (including videos shot from a Mi-8 helicopter): http://tangosixblog.com/2012/05/01/aerodrom-morava/

I would just mention that the upper floor is meant for administration workers only. Passangers will mingle downstairs.

Hi BEG2IAH (I can guess what your life routing has been...   ),

About the mingling of pax: I understood from the architect on site, that in the beginning the bar would be down stairs, but later will move up stairs (or vice versa). Anyway, there is plenty of room upstairs (you should see the director's office...   ).

I so hope this airport will see more action than INI... I had hoped JAT would route the IST-flights BEG-KVO-IST and then sell tickets on BEG-KVO. Probably not going to happen.

Thanks for the sites! I'll go and check them out.

Regards,

DB

Quoting DutchBoeing (Reply 5):

I actually asked some folks in Kraljevo if there is any newspaper ad or something announcing job openings, so they will let me know when they see something. As of now, nothing yet.

At first all official announcements mentioned end of summer as the targeted beginning of flights, but now in one of the videos they said they target this fall. We'll see.

Sad to see another quite bland shiny stone, steel and glas building ... could be a great chance to design a beautiful building with local attitudes and references.

@lh526, I suppose that comes down to personal preference. I personally happen to like it very much. Serbia is a poor country and this project is already very expensive for them. Given their means, I think it looks rather well! Following the same thoughts: don't you find MUC extremely bland and ugly then too? Talk about a white / glass / boring fantasyless airport... Given the money Germany has, they should have made that new airport more interesting! I.e. like DEN looks like the Rockies, MUC could've looked like the Alps or something... I guess functionality and cost matter most in every country!

@DutchBoeing I personally find MUC to be quite boring as well. Good architecture has nothing to do with money, but with investors and builders who are willing to share the passion to build something beautiful. And a good architect as well.

Quite surprised that there is a new airport opened in Serbia - if I am not mistaken, Nis is the only airport other than Belgrade that has scheduled services (couple of weekly flights by Podgorica?), so apparently there is not too much demand for regional air services.

@vfw614. True, but, as I understood it, the economy of regions are quite different: Nis is in the South of Serbia and Kraljevo (KVO) in the center. KVO is only about 200km from BEG, but the roads are not quick: the quality of the roads themselves is ok, it's just a lack of highways. A road trip to/from BEG takes about 3 hours - from personal experience.

The particular region KVO is in, is called Sumadija. A substantial part of the Serbian diaspora comes from that region. The airport is located in the triangle between the cities of Kraljevo, Cacak and Kragujevac. Alle three reasonably large. Especially Kragujevac is doing rather well these days, due to a lot of foreign investment (cheap, but good quality labour...) and it is sort of famous for having taken over the FIAT cars production. JP operates twice a week a charter from BEG to TRN for FIAT-employees. I wouldn't be surprised if this charter flight was moved to KVO soon! I might be wrong, but I believe that one of the conditions of FIAT moving it's production to Serbia was that there would be an airport opened in Kraljevo. I don't know if that's true. Perhaps somebody else here has more info?

Another reason for this project: it was financed by Turkey and the main condition was that the first (or at least a) service would be to IST, which, indeed, has been announced already by JAT. Without starting a political discussion here, Turkey tries to do in the Balkans now economically what it failed to do militairy about 100 years ago...
