@vfw614. True, but, as I understood it, the economy of regions are quite different: Nis is in the South of Serbia and Kraljevo (KVO) in the center. KVO is only about 200km from BEG
, but the roads are not quick: the quality of the roads themselves is ok, it's just a lack of highways. A road trip to/from BEG
takes about 3 hours - from personal experience.
The particular region KVO is in, is called Sumadija. A substantial part of the Serbian diaspora comes from that region. The airport is located in the triangle between the cities of Kraljevo, Cacak and Kragujevac. Alle three reasonably large. Especially Kragujevac is doing rather well these days, due to a lot of foreign investment (cheap, but good quality labour...) and it is sort of famous for having taken over the FIAT cars production. JP
operates twice a week a charter from BEG
for FIAT-employees. I wouldn't be surprised if this charter flight was moved to KVO soon! I might be wrong, but I believe that one of the conditions of FIAT moving it's production to Serbia was that there would be an airport opened in Kraljevo. I don't know if that's true. Perhaps somebody else here has more info?
Another reason for this project: it was financed by Turkey and the main condition was that the first (or at least a) service would be to IST
, which, indeed, has been announced already by JAT. Without starting a political discussion here, Turkey tries to do in the Balkans now economically what it failed to do militairy about 100 years ago...
