DL DC-9 2013 Schedules?

Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:07 pm

I was wondering if Delta still intends to keep DC-9-50 till the start of 2013, as I would *probably* be flying to US. It'll be a great chance to fly on one of this birds! Are the schedules out to check, or will they be retired before March 2013?

No telling what routes the DC9s will be flying specifically 7 months from now. I have yet to see a firm date but the general consensus is that the 9s' last year with Delta will be 2013.

As of late, on shorter routes, MD88s/319s/DC9s are used interchangeably on the shorter stuff out of ATL depending on day of week.
What gets measured gets done.

DC-9-50 routes this summer that I have seen scheduled are ATL-PNS/CHS/BHM/BNA most commonly. There are of course others. It's impossible to predict with the fleet drawdown which routes they'll be operating next year, so you may want to wait to book your flight until closer to your travel when the schedules may be more finalized. Delta does tend to make schedule changes, and it can both work in your favor or to your detriment if you are trying to fly a specific airplane.

DL subbed one into ROC yesterday from ATL (#511). Too bad the sky was iffy.

ATL-ORD has the DC-9 frequently. 4 times a day during the peak days.

Same with GRR, 2-3 per day. We've been a long time host to the DC-9.

I would expect them to be around for most of 2013, at least until enough 717s have arrived to replace the 16 or so that are staying past this year.

There is talk that some of the D95s may remain active into early 2014.

The short answer is that no one can say with any degree of confidence which particular flight on any given day will be operated by a DC-9 in March 2013.

With the way DL schedules their narrowbody aircraft and interchanges aircraft on a specific flight any given month, it is difficult to say more than 90 days out.

The best bet will be in the remaining markets out of primarily ATL and the few at DTW that still get DC-9 service. A specific flight?

The best bets are going to be routes like:
ATL-SAV
ATL-ORD
ATL-MEM
DTW-MEM
DTW-ORD

Again, way to far out to tell with certainty.

They're common on many shorthaul routes out of ATL to places such as MEM, BNA, BHM, CHS, SAV, PNS, GSO, GSP, DAB, SDF, CLT, JAN. Also ORD sees several daily from both ATL & DTW so either of those cities out of there is a good bet.
Even after the merger DTW was DC-9-haven for awhile, especially before the retirement of the -30's/-40's. But now it only sees a handful of them daily. DTW-BWI, CLT, ORD, MEM, MSP off the top of my head.
The nine's are almost all gone from MSP, I believe just one daily flight to either DTW or MEM.

I saw that bird today at SDF. I noticed it taxiing out to the runway and freaked out when I first saw that forward bin door as it initially looked like it was left open from a distance. I wonder if that door's weird paint job is the result of a ramper ramming a belt loader into it or something of that nature?

So, is there some sort of marketing opportunity for Delta? Could they offer some sort of open-ended standby kind of thing in ATL where you pay some money and they put you on a DC-9 out and back kind of trip, without regard to where the flights actually go? In other words, you pay to fly on a DC-9 and they give you a trip based on what's available.

I take it CMH will not have a regular DL DC-9 flight again? Maybe only as a substitute aircraft?

Can't say with certaintly. Right now there is nothing in the forseeable future for this summer or fall.

However CMH gets a 757 to ATL starting in September.

Ugh, I wish they'd paint that forward cargo door! It always scares me because with a quick glance you think, "Is that door open?!"

I have my flightaware emails configured to alert me when any series of DC9 (amongst others) plan to arrive here. Great tool.

Haha, I love that neither of the cargo doors match the paint on the rest of the plane

Indeed. For the summer of 2012, D95's will make up the largest number of mainline departures at ORD. Followed closely by the MD-90.

Just last night I booked my myself a ORD-DTW-ORD daytrip for August 1. Hopefully these aren't my last DC-9 flights, but you never know. Its too bad we don't see them at MKE anymore but at least the ORD flights are dirt cheap (only $56 one-way). I'm in Arizona for school 3/4 of the year so the summer is the really the only time I can go on these kind of flights.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I was on a DC95 today from Day>ATL I was shocked to see it pull up to the gate as this is usually a MD88 mainline route. I was also even more shocked to see how incredibly clean the interior was. I hadn't been on one since they were operated by NW but Delta made it look like a brand new plane I was totally shocked.

Didn't get the ship number.

Other than the seat covers and carpet, nothing has changed.
