Antonov AN-124 At ONT

Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:05 pm

I passed by Ontario Airport (sorry, excuse me LA/ONT Airport) today and saw two Volga-Dnep or Polet Airlines Antonov AN-124s parked where the old terminals are. Does anyone have any information as to why they are in SoCal? It was a bit of surprise to see two as I have seen one on a couple other occasions. They seem to frequent Ontario quiet a lot.

Its Antonov Design Bureau Airlines aircraft. It flew in off a military charter from the UK to El Centro Naval Air Facility.

There are actually 3 floating around having flown charters into El Centro over the weekend.

Ontario had a Polet AN124 last Thursday also.

Why do they leave El Centro? Insufficient space at the facility for them to stay there?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what can a An124 do that a C-5 cannot ?
Would think the USAF would have plenty of those around to move outsize cargo.

Typically after you are done at an air base with a charter, they don't want you hanging around waiting for your next trip. It can be a hassle getting out to the aircraft once you leave it as well. It may also have to do with space at some of them. ONT is a good airport to hang out at waiting for your next assignment.

It was cool seeing them both there though, I came in Monday and left early this morning and they were still both sitting there.

The An124 charters are primarily for USN and USMC ops. Since the C-5 Galaxy is a USAF bird, USAF cargo flights come 1st. The An124 charters are frequent visitors to NGF (MCB Hawai‘i at Kane‘ohe Bay) and HNL with many CH-53 deployments and returns.
