LH Downgrades MUC-TLV To A321?!

Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:32 am

According to the booking tool on is webpage, Lufthansa in W12/13 flies MUC-TLV-MUC with airbus 321 instead of 330/340. Frankfurt is twice daily 330. Anyone know the reason for this? Since LH reinstated MUC-TLV some 4 or 5 years ago the route was always on 330/340 and sometimes even 346...

I'd like to point out that LH's A321 seats 200 people, while the A330 seats 221 people - not a huge capacity difference. I would guess this change is for one of the 2 following reasons;

1.) The A330/340's premium cabins (especially F and intercontinental J) are not needed on this route due to lack of premium demand at this time. (The A321's Y capacity is actually more than the 330's)

2.) The range of the A330/340 is needed on other routes that an A321 cannot be used on, and the fleet must be well utilized - there's better long-haul destinations to send it on than TLV, which can be done with the A321 without much capacity loss.

I don't know the actual reasons, but those would be my two guesses, if anyone can chime in who knows more, I'd love to hear.

That and maybe the upcoming fleet refurbishment of their premium products?

Cheers, Sen.

And I guess 3) is that most cargo go via FRA and not MUC.
