CHS 787 Traffic

Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:34 pm

I am flying on SWA1174 from ISP-BWI-CHS on Thursday morning and am wondering how great my chances are of catching a glimpse of a 787 (whether parked or in action)? I see that one flew yesterday CHS-MYR(which is actually one of my home airports) but I missed it. What is the proximity of the Boeing facilities to the commercial terminal? I do hope to see one of the majestic new birds.

The Boeing plant is right next to the terminal in CHS. If you're driving out of the terminal, you'll see the facility very clearly. You'll probably also see one of the DreamLifters on the ramp as well. If you go to the cell phone waiting area, it is literally right next to the assembly building and you can see anything that is taxiing to/from the Boeing ramp.

As for the 787s... when I was there a couple weeks ago, the only one I saw was an AI bird that was undergoing ramp completion tasks. The outdoor ramp for the 787's is on the opposite side of the assembly building from the terminal, so unless you drive around to the other side of of the assembly building, you probably won't see anything. Even then, there's a lof of blast fencing that surrounds the ramp area, but you can still see the planes on the ramp.

I wouldn't count on any photo opportunities, though. Security is pretty tight and the airport police are everywhere.

Thanks for the info! Since my place is 10 minutes from MYR, I'll be keeping my eye out there, too.

This past weekend the AI bird was sitting on the ramp. There is a frontage road around the airport that takes you right by the 787 ramp. I took a drive around it and was able to get some very good views of it as I drove past. However, stopping was NOT an option. As I turned around and came back by, there were two cops on 4 wheelers patrolling the perimeter fences.

If I am sitting on the right side of the aircraft in a window seat, will I be able to see the ramp fr omthe plane as we taxi in?

The AI bird flew a testflight yesterday. It may or may not need more test-/acceptence flights before delivery. As Boeing and AI now has agreed on the conditions, its next flight may be the Flyaway ..

Most likely it will require another testflight or two, though. It might also be used for some promowork, being the frst CHS bird.

(why don't we make this an official thread?)

When I check flight aware, what do I look for to get only 787 traffic out of CHS?

Given the current low number of 787's around, you can just search for all of them and pick out the ones at CHS:

Or you can also just look on the flight schedule for flights listed as BOE or have the equipment as a B788.

The AI bird flew a testflight yesterday.

Odds are that that's the one that flew to Myrtle Beach and back yesterday.

Anyone know if Boeing's planning on using MYR in a similar capacity to MWH out here? I've been wondering what their plans for SC test flights are...

I do know that it is the airport where they will conduct certain ground tests of all their CHS-built machines.

Yes, that's the one. It was viewable on Flightradar24. It flies as BOE237, which you can set up alert for at Flightaware.

Yesterday both VT-AND and VT-ANH were flown to CHS, so I'm assuming AI will have their first three 787's delivered from there. Bring out t he cameras.
