Jetstar To Start Singapore To Cairns

Thu Jun 21, 2012 1:18 pm

Its been six years since direct service from SIN-CNS, but now Jetstar are starting the route.

There isn't too much information as of yet but there will be a full press release at the State Government's Destination Q conference in the far north Queensland city next week.

Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Yes or maybe, all going well, an A332? We'll find out when they hold the press release!

I'm confused - havent they already been flying this route with a stop in DRW enroute in both directions, often with an A321?

Using an A332 would require cutbacks somewhere else in the network... This will probably be an A320.

I don't think an A320 would have the range to cover 3112 miles.

Yep which is why I'm thinking it must be an A330. They already fly the route 1 stop so I sincerely doubt that they are making a big song and dance about "launching" a six year old route which they never cut!

(Is there any possibility that an A320 could make it? I was under the impression that the answer was no)

EDIT - I'm going to answer my own question, I see on GCMap that CNS-SIN is 700mi longer than LAX-JFK. Therefore there is surely not a bat's chance in hell of an A320 making it

I think the 332 capacity will come from AKL-SIN.

332 is a big plane to fill but I hope you are correct. Big chance to fed into Cairns from lots of Asian destinations
Where's the passion gone out of the airline industry? The smell of jetfuel and the romance of taking a flight....

Yah I realised that soon after posting... Perhaps this will be a mix of the one stop A320 via DRW and a couple of weekly nonstop A332's. They might even be able to squeeze a rotation in between trips to Japan if they cut the legs down to SYD to an A320 with an aircraft change in CNS.

Although I can't confirm it, but I don't think so. It has all along been operated with JQ aircraft and JQ crew with a 3K flight number that's all. Transferring the flight from JQ to 3K does not do anything to the schedules although the timings has been slightly altered by an hour.

Besides that, I'd really love to see a direct link between SIN and CNS again. Last time a there was a non-stop between the 2 cities were SQ with their A310s (correct me if I'm wrong) so it would be great if we see a non-stop flight once again!

That wouldn't surprise me. I think they are struggling on the AKL-SIN sector as they have a terrible reputation in New Zealand.

Well Jetstar is down to 3 weekly SIN-AKL. Perhaps they'll send the A330 on the other days to Cairns.

Does anyone know the significance of the SIN-AKL service being JQ coded rather than 3K coded from 1 Jul?

I don't believe CNS was ever served non stop from SIN. all previous flights, including SQ, MH, QF and AO were via DRW.
perhaps the time for non-stop is right.

JQ are moving a aircraft from DRW to CNS, so it looks like its going to be A320!

The SIN-AKL-SIN flights have always been operated by JQ pilots and 3K cabin crew but perhaps starting from 1st July these flights will be operated by JQ pilots and JQ cabin crew instead?

The Airbus A320 has a published range of 3300 nautical miles and even the A321 has a published range of around 3200 nautical miles but that's not to say they can be deployed economically on such sectors taking into account the need to uplift extra fuel for possible diversions on top of the legal minimum fuel reserve requirements and there is also going to be payload restrictions on such long sectors.

The GC distance CNS-SIN is 2704 nautical miles and there are no ETOPS considerations..

I think that 500 nm is sufficient margin to make A321/A320 ops both feasible and economic.

I'm pretty sure that back in the days when QF flew from SIN to DRW and CNS, the flight some days was SIN-DRW-CNS and on other days SIN-CNS nonstop. Maybe someone else can confirm?

QF did indeed fly SIN-CNS non-stop as well as SIN-DRW-CNS.This probably came to an end in the early 1990s after the Gulf crisis, if I remember well.

I remembered.. SQ did non stop SINCNS on A310, think it was SQ239/240, while QF did non stop as well on the B767, coded QF61/62.. Similarly AO

The 31 March 96 QF timetable shows CNS-SIN (QF61) and SIN-CNS (QF62) being discontinued on 29 June.
My subsequent QF timetables show no more CNS-SIN nonstop flights.
Cheers.

I remember correctly and I am sure that there's only one flight from SIN-DRW-CNS by Qantas. No direct flight from SIN to CNS.

QF061 CNS-SIN was daily and operated both non-stop (3pw) and via DRW (4pw) up to the mid 90s. I can give you exact frequencies when I get home next week.

After the cessation of AO, Qantas operated six non-stop CNS-SIN flights on Saturdays using 73H equipment sold as all-Economy.

Some snippets from past QF timetables as an addittion to the post from my very good friend 28L28L.

Nov 92 - Days 124 and 7 CNS - DRW - SIN QF 61 767, Days 3 and 6 CNS - SIN QF 61 767

Mar 97 - Daily x 4 CNS - DRW - SIN QF 61 767. The return QF 62 Day 3 term in SYD, all others term CNS.

Mar 01 - Daily CNS - DRW - SIN QF 61 EQV (Eqpt varies). Don't anderstand this as they didnt get the -800 until late 01. Does it mean an ac change in DRW? Also the Day 4 QF 62 proceeded thru to BNE and QF61 Day 5 originated BNE.

Anyway QF did fly direct DRW - SIN and return on a number of occasions.
cheers.

The only -800 flights to SIN have been the six CNS-SIN flights after AO closed and the PER-DPS-SIN flights. There has also been a handful of aircraft subs from 333 to 73H on PER-SIN due to aircraft availability issues.

The EQV for the QF061 was a mixed 763/74L operation, depending on day of the week.
