ATC Facility Fire In Atlantic City

Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:53 am

According to news sources (no links sorry) a fire damaged an air traffic control tech facility in Atlantic City. This facility handles flights in and out of the Northeast US. Numerous flights have been badly delayed....some canceled (I believe JetBlue and Delta at first glance). Anyone else with more details on delays and damage?

Pretty bad delays up and down the east coast. There are pretty bad storms there too, so that may have something to do with the delays.

I wonder if this is why the OIS web site has been down for hours...

Disregard, answered my own question: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...usa-faa-fire-idUSL2E8HN02K20120623

Sitting here in PBI....have a 45-minute flight to TPA delayed about 6 hours. And yes, the weather hasn't helped.

Couldn't you just drive there for half the time?

Yup.

Anyone know where they moved the ATC operations to? Will this have a long term effect on flights (tomorrow....etc)?

It appears the incident has also effected flight information provided to websites like flightaware and flightview. I tried to track several flights recently and they post "no info" or "call airline." Is this because their information comes directly from ATC?

We (B6) had a ton of flights cancelled today. Today was the worst IROP day for me since the snowstorm back in the beginning of 2011.

Any diversions caused by this? I think we (WN) had at least one. A PBI-ISP diverted to CHS.

1048 NAS-HPN diverted to BWI because of the outage, we had quite a few divert because of weather though (and i'm sure the outage just compounded the issue.)

I was traveling through IAD yesterday and almost all UAX ops were cancelled. Then the thunderstorms rolled in and took care of the rest. It was pretty messy.
It's an entirely different kind of flying; all together!

Was that because of the ATC or because of the WX? We had some nasty little storms roll through yesterday. They were small, but they packed a punch, and came in 2 waves (first one in the early afternoon like 3pm, then another later like 7 or 8pm). Power outages, localized road flooding, downed trees, LIRR service suspended on certain branches, it was a mess last night. Here's my car after the first storm, that was fun to get out:

This is not an air traffic control facility. The Tech Center is a complex located next to the ACY airport but there are no actual ATC operational duties there at this time. Most of their work is to develop and test air traffic control equipment. The runway that passes next to the complex was closed for a couple of hours but there were no big delays in the system due to this fire.

It will be interesting to see what modernization projects for the FAA are delayed due to this event.

From the information I got, the facilty processes most if not all the ASDi messages. Hence why sites like flightaware.com weren't getting updated information.

After they moved to another site they were having problems getting all the systems and connections up and running.

Not true. ACY is home to the TPC- the TFMS (Traffic Flow Management System) Production Center. TFMS sits on top of HOST/ERAM and is responsible for system wide management of the NAS.

This sounds like it makes more sense to me. If it didn't effect flights, why would we have received a flight information message about it detailing the likely ground and air delay programs caused by the facility shutdown? If it were just a fire at a non-ATC facility my airline (WN) doesn't even fly into, we would have no interest in it at all.

In addition to the lousy weather due to the mini heatwave (thunderstorms) and being a summertime Friday, the ATC fire was the perfect storm for delays for almost all airlines. We had pushes as late as 0100. Add to all this your regular players for bad weather and massive delays BOS and SFO! SFO seems to be making a run at airports from hell for delays along with the nasty New York axis of evil three, BOS and CLT. Regarding the fire it seems latley, there have been fires, breakdowns and other incidences dealing with air traffic control centers. As they say our tax dollars hard at work. WTF?
And in our delay announcements and updates we reiterated this fact. Most passengers rolled with the flow but you had your 10% who made it miserable for the 90% of us who also had to fly or work yesterday. Let us hope there is never an Amtrak (government airline) choosing between it or a carrier like Ghana Air would be a hard pill to swallow and a lethal choice. Rant finished.
