Widebody Service Returns To IAH-DEN

Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:20 pm

Looking at UnitedAirlines.com I noticed something interesting. The 767-300 that UA uses on IAH-LIM will continue onward to DEN on weekends this summer.

A morning IAH-DEN segment is this aircraft today. One flight is upgauged on weekends (Sat.Sun. only) in this market.

Very interesting. I remember in the 90's when CO used the A300 heavily in this market. This market has always been a key market for the old CO, and continues for the new UA. This route joins the few domestic routes that see a widebody.

It is always nice to see heavies doing domestic flights other than transcontinental (even though they are disappearing on those routes, too). I remember in Tampa a few years ago seeing a DL 767 (764 I think) arriving from Atlanta and wondering how you could ever fill that big of a plane for such route... none the less it is always nice to see that happening

And, I noticed that UA has a 767-300 on DEN-EWR today. Again, this market hasn't seen a widebody since CO had the A300, and UA used to do DEN-EWR-LHR.

The crossfleeting continues. Very exciting.

Really glad to see this and I hope it continues. It's not as much fun flying from DEN to smaller markets in the Eastern US as the ORD and IAD flights are now almost solely 752 or smaller aircraft. Upgrades hard to get for a lowly Premier Gold guy like me.

Is UA planning on continuing to add widebody flights back to DEN - EWR/IAD/ORD/IAH/SFO/LAX routes?

Legacy UA operated widebodies from DEN to ORD, SFO and IAD as I recall, and I'm pretty sure they still do...CO only had widebodies from EWR to IAH...there was a thread earlier if UA was going to tie the CO hubs into the UA system with wide bodies like they already do within their system...there have been 763's to EWR from SFO and LAX already, hopefully the trend will continue...

Even around '98, '99, '00 and '01 CO was running a daily DC-10 to DEN from IAH.

When CO had the Denver hub they flew A300s from DEN to SEA, SFO, LAX, SAN, PHX, LAS, IAH, CLE, ORD, EWR etc.. As well as DC-10s to HNL and LGW.

yes but I am talking about today...CO only connects EWR and IAH, and for a time they didn't even do this...UA seems to have widebody connections between all their legacy hubs, most likely for repositioning...However it would be nice if IAH and EWR would also get widebody connections to the legacy UA hubs as well...it looks as if they are doing it somewhat...hopefully they will continue...it would certainly give them flexibility in cargo routing for sure.

Yea they are now with IAH/EWR - SFO currently running 763s. With a 763 pilot base opening at IAH soon I'd anticipate seeing them between hubs. Also of note, CO use to run the widebodies between IAH-LAX/SFO as late as the mid 2000s. IAH-DEN/MSY/MCO often get swapped to 764s/762s currently.

UA855 LIM/IAH used to continue to SFO...not sure if it still does...they had that one as soon as they upgraded the LIM/IAH from a CO 752 to a UA 763...

It does, flew it twice...for the summer though on Sat/sun its the bird operating to DEN then onto HNL.
