Saw My First 787 And 747-8I

Sat Jun 23, 2012 11:22 pm

While transiting through Frankfurt a few days ago, I saw a ANA 787, and Lufthansa's brand new 747-8I, D-ABYA. I know, not that big of a deal, but I got really excited. We ended up parked next to the 787. BTW, this is my first post in the forums.

I'm interested to see how the 787 compares to the A330 when sitting next to each other. Is it about the same cabin height, how do the wings compare, etc.

Congrats on seeing both of those aircraft.

I didn't really pay attention to that, but I did notice that our A340-300 felt a bit taller, and from the gate looked a lot longer.

I love the long haul ANA 787 Dreamliner JA805A my beautiful baby!

She was there when we landed with the return inaugural on the Lufthansa 747-8i
I know which one of the two gets my preference!!!

Thanks for the post!

I made a pilgrimage to KPAE last fall to see both for the first time, and indeed it was thrilling.

It takes some getting used to that loooong upper deck on the -8i, no?

And as nice as the 787-8 is, the -9 will be a nicer looking plane than the -8, IMHO.

The -8 clearly looks like it could use a stretch!
Inspiration, move me brightly!

Welcome on board from me too,

I neither saw the 787 nor the 748 in Reallife.
But the 787 is a very cool and awesome aircraft! I really want to fly one time with a 787!

The 748 looks for me like the 744 but with more seats/space on the upper deck.

Years ago my wife and I were visiting Seattle and I dragged her to Snohomish County Airport for a little Boeing viewing. We took the production line tour but were not told what we were going to see. Little did we know they would bring us to the viewing platform between the 777 and 787 line. The first two 787s were on the line and assembled - but not completed. What a thrill....a brand new type that had not even flown yet. Of course they had confiscated my camera before starting the tour.

Last month I was at LHR and was fortunate enough to see the 787 again. It was sitting at a hard stand and we taxied right past it. In fact, the United captain told everyone on the left side of the aircraft about the 787 as we went by. Good times.....still haven't seen the 747-8. Will try to catch it in MIA.

I've generally noticed that Airbus aircraft seem to be "taller" than most, maybe all, of their Boeing counterparts. The first time I flew on an A320 I was a little freaked out because I was expecting the B737's low position.

Cool I guess. I have never seen a 787 and probably never will. The only 747 I ever saw was an old AA 747-100 type series at HNL back in the early 80's.

What are you, in federal prison or something? 787s are going to be everywhere. Even 747s are common enough if you know where to look. A380s... Now there's something hard to get hold of. I once went a year without seeing one in real life...

Welcome to a.net.
Living in the Seattle area, I've been fortunate to see both many times. Still a thrill. Highlight of the flight test program spotting came the day the 748i had its maiden flight. There was a large crowd of fellow spotters at BFI awaiting touchdown and immediately prior to the 748's arrival came not one but two of the 787 test birds. That was pretty cool.

Saw my first 787 (JAL) taking off to NRT from BOS couple of weeks ago ... had to stop, look up in awe, and snap a few shots with my iPhone ... the other pedestrians on the street must have thought I'm crazy!  and say my first 748 parked in IAD couple of days (LH) ...

both times, needless to day, I was extremely thrilled ...

I saw the 748 well before I saw the 787, but they're both amazing a/c to see...

The first time I saw the 748 was... well embarrassing. I fly in and out of AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG 2-3 times a month and I had kept an eye out for the 748 for some time now. We landed and on our rollout I looked out the window and saw 3 748's. Keep in mind, I'm in first class coming off of a 16 hour non-stop, and when I see them blurt out to the guy next to me like he was another one of my pilot buddies screaching OH MY GOD ITS THE 748! AH, AND ITS THE SPIRIT OF HONG KONG SCHEME, WHAT A TREAT! THATS SO COOL!!!

The guy next to me just looked at me, looked out the window, and went back to reading his paper. I decided to skip talking about aviation to strangers from now.

I had the exact same reaction earlier in the year (though it was just the Spirit of HK plane). People thought I was having a fit to the extent that a FA came over to check I was okay as soon as we had left the runway... I still don't know why it was s exciting...

My first 787 was when it visited SYD last year. Stunning aircraft to see come in to land, and even more stunning out of the window of a little 738 as you taxi past. I was also struck by how low she seemed to be, especially given that it would have been a pretty lightly loaded plane.

Living a few miles from a 787 assembly line means I know where to see 787s whenever I want to.   However, I've yet to see one taking off or landing, and am definitely looking forward to that. I also cannot wait to see a 748i. That will be a real treat for me.

Here in ANC we see a ton of freighter traffic from all over but the 747-8 stands in a class of it own. I remember the first time I saw her. She was rotating right before me, just as I was putting my car in park to snap some photos. One word----> Majestic!!

That's a funny story and similar to what happened the first time I saw Concorde. Was totally unexpected and we were going down the freeway. I shouted out something quite a bit like you did and the driver almost went off the road! With the 748 had something like that too once. Our office is close to BFI and one day a gal who sat next to a window casually said words to the effect of "that's a pretty big plane" so I go to the window and there's the one in sunrise livery about 1000 feet or less AGL. I made some sort of exclamation but since we're an airfreight company and there's lot of airplane geeks there, most people understood and joined me at the window to stare.

JA-801A -the HKG 787- domestic turnaround to Hiroshima and back to Haneda
JA-805A -the FRA 787- first ever long haul inaugural flight 21 January 2012

Different cabin arrangements with more psychedelic colours on the first domestic aircraft
They were both brand new and beautiful. I loved JA-801A livery with all the stripes. So beautiful!
JA-805A is more plain looking but with a very beautiful cabin inside.

I would have stepped out of the 747-8i and gone on board JA-805A to HND in a flash - not possible unfortunately...

I am happy to see that many more passengers are now enjoying the ANA 787-8 Dreamliners!

Definitely 'looks' smaller. I was onboard ZA003 in January in a hanger that normally house's A330's, didn't 'fill the space' as much' seemed a little smaller than a B767 (sleeker is a better term) The ratio of window size to fuselage definitely throws off the eye.

A bit off topic, but I have a rather ridiculous situation with the A380......

I live in Toronto and have seen the EK A380 numerous times at YYZ in the past few years, as I drive by the airport .....couple of years back, I also saw the A380 at LHR (QF and SQ).....what I'm yearning to see is an A380 taking off, landing or just flying....I've just not got a chance to see it in any of those situations.....always seen them stationary or taxiing....

To add insult to injury, I actually flew on the A380 (SQ - SIN to HKG) back in 2010, but I was inside the plane of course! So still no view of the plane taking off or landing   I actually recall that as we taxied to the runway at Changi, there was a QF A380 on the runway ahead of us, but just as it started it's TO roll, our plane turned on the taxiway and I lost sight of the runway.....

Seems like I have to wait some time more to catch sight of an A380 in the air.....

Saw my first 747-8i today on approach to IAD (LH, FRA-IAD), beautiful looking aircraft!

Still yet to see the 787-8, but managed to catch the 747-8F (BA World Cargo) at MAD a few weeks ago.

Exciting times ahead for the aviation industry.

On my birthday in 2007 a demonstration A380 (I believe it's CN7) flew into CVG after a low pass by the GE facility, which is about 5 miles north of my high school. The plane flew right over my high school. It was astounding to see it fly over with those huge wings.

Welcome. When I was about your age in late July 1958 I flew from LHR to LBG in a BEA Vickers Viscount, my first commercial flight - note my handle. On arrival I saw, parked next to each other, the prototype Sud Aviation Caravelle (F-BHHI) in full AF livery and the the first 707-100 (N707PA) in full PA livery.

The 707 - I believe was at LBG on a proving flight - was subsequently delivered to PA on 30 November. By then the 707 had flown its first commercial service with PA just over a month earlier on 26 October 1958.

So it may not be a big deal but that does not mean it is something you will quickly forget. Such is the stuff of memories!

Must say, one of the most thrilling moments of my aviation life.
Yet to see the 787 and A380. (Ive been to Dubai numerous times, but call me an idiot that i did not spot.)

A very nice looking aircraft. I saw her at Frankfurt airport - gave me the chance to see two 747-8 the "i" and the BA freighter on the same day.

I would have loved going on the Japan Airlines 787-8 Dreamliner first inaugural commercial flight just to compare experiences with ANA. There was too much going on and I had chosen the new Lufthansa inaugural. Cannot do it all I guess!

You poor thing. I feel SO sorry for you.

Haha....thanks.....but I just find it amusing......hope I don't have the same experience with the 787.....but considering I'm at AC's home base, I'll soon be seeing them every day.....when is AC getting their 787s BTW?

On my birthday in 2007 a demonstration A380 (I believe it's CN7) flew into CVG after a low pass by the GE facility, which is about 5 miles north of my high school. The plane flew right over my high school. It was astounding to see it fly over with those huge wings.

Lucky you

Still haven't seen the 787. I did see the 748 in British Airways cargo livery on take off from Frankfurt early this year. Even from a distance she looked majestic, and those stylish BA colors go so well on a 747.
I love my Airport Job! :)
