Qantas In SFO - Late 1960s

Mon Jun 25, 2012 12:04 am

Does anybody have the arr/dep times of Qantas at SFO in the late 60s? I think at this point there may have been one flight that terminated in SFO, and another that continued onto JFK and LHR

I rode QF in 1970 from JFK to SFO, and on to HNL for a stopover. We departed JFK in the afternoon as the flight had originated in LHR. We arrived in SFO in the late afternoon.....maybe around 6-7pm as it was in August and still light. The same flight # continued on to HNL, NAN and on to SYD.
The return flight arrived in SFO in the evening having departed HNL midday and did a night stop, continuing on to JFK and LHR the next morning with the same aircraft and flight #.
I traveled outbound on a Sunday and returned on a Thur and Fri to JFK with the nightstop in SFO.
Sorry I have no record of flight #'s, but had terrific service from all QF staff and obviously enjoyed every mile riding that beautiful 707. I also remember one flight segment was under the command of Captain Cook......an appropriate name for someone piloting a craft to Fiji and Australia huh?
Thank You again Qantas for an awesome trip.
watch what you want. you may get it.

Off topic I know, but apparently the Qantas service in the 1960s was really something else, and held in very high regard. It was a "bit different" to other airlines at the time, as the Qantas crew compliment at the time was for 5 male Stewards and just a single Flight Hostess. Even BOAC had a split of 3/3.

Not quite the "late" '60s, but if June 1966 helps, QF arrivals/departures at SFO then were as follows (from BOAC June 1, 1966 timetable which includes QF schedules, from the timetableimages.com site:

QF530 (Mo/We/Sa) and QF586 (Tu/Th/Fr/Su) SYD-NAN-HNL-SFO arrived SFO 1820.
QF530 continued to JFK-LHR at 2315 (it was a daytime flight then JFK-LHR departing JFK at 0900). QF586 terminated SFO.

QF588 (We/Th) SYD-NAN-HNL-SFO and QF596 (Sa) SYD-BNE-NAN-HNL-SFO arrived SFO 1640.

Other direction:
QF531 (Mo/We/Fr) and QF587 (Tu/Th/Sa/Su) departed SFO 2000 for HNL-NAN-SYD. (QF531 arrived SFO 1845 from LHR-JFK.)
QF589 (Th/Sa) and QF597 (Fr) were daytime flights departing SFO 1145, with QF597 making an extra stop at BNE.
