CO/UA On-Board Product Match-Up

Mon Jun 25, 2012 5:53 pm

Hi All,

Did a quick search and didn't see anything on the lines of this thread.

Just a question I've been wondering for a while. As CO/UA have now merged, what will happen to the onboard product? Will all the 772's from both CO/UA be matched up? The same going for the 752's..

IMO CO has a more solid onboard product (especially the IFE on the 772's and 752's) and if I had it my way (Economics out of the question) Id love the UA 772's and 752's to receive the same product to match CO's.

What are your thoughts on this and have they decided how this will work? Will they be the same across the fleet or will they remain different products?

Thanks!

You can find your answers in the multiple United/Cont. Existing Fleet Upgrade Status threads.

I think to sum up:

PMCO planes:
-All 772s have been upgraded with BF, just awaiting Y+ modification.
-764s are in the process to gain new BF seats and Y+ added as well as AVOD nose-to-tail. Not sure about inseat power.
-All 752s have new BF seats and I believe finished with Y+ modification.
-762s are in the process of being phased out of the fleet.

PMUA planes: (my details on this is a bit sketchy)
-Domestic 763s will begin or have begun getting fitted with sCO's BF seat and become 2-class planes for international use.
-772s in 3 class will remain in 3 class and have sUAs upgraded product including AVOD nose-to-tail.
-3-class 763s will remain with sUA upgraded product.
-744s should have upgraded product for F and J. Don't know the details for Y+/Y
The journey of life is not based on the accomplishments, but the experience.

I thought i might find the info somewhere in these threads but was in no mood to sift through the 000's of comments..

Will the PMUA AVOD upgrades be the same as the AVOD on CO 772's?

UA's system is better, IMO, although CO's is decent.

As for the overall product, they'll probably be different for several years. Both fleets have gone though cabin remods and upgrades, so there's no point in changing things when they're fairly new. Changing seat covers would probably be the easiest change, but that's probably still a couple of years off.

The upgraded 767-300 "dirty birds" are receiving winglets and PMCO BF and Y seats with PMCO IFE. This is the first fleet type they're bringing PMUA in line with the PMCO product, so I'm guessing that's what's here to stay...much to the chagrin of diehard UA fans.

In all, I think they're probably in a better position than DL. They have so many subfleets it's stupid. They've only recently started bringing the 744s in line with the rest of the DL fleet. That should give you an idea of how long these things can take.

Both have some ups and downs for Y. I don't think PMCO's is really any better:

PMUA IPTE 763: cycle ptvs in Y, no power outlets, 3 class. It's decent for economy and honestly no different than the PMCO 762s and non-refirbished 764s. Much better than the non refirbished DL 763.
PMUA IPTE 763 2-class: Looks really nice. AVOD and power in Y. Only one is out there though.
PMUA 777 non-IPTE 3-class: These are old but will soon be converted over to 3-class IPTE versions. Seating in Y is 2-5-2 cycle ptvs in Y, old J recliner seats. Probably the weakest product offer for United at the moment but it's not that bad either.
PMUA 777 IPTE 3-class. These are my favorite. Love the AVOD in Y. 3-class is good but some don't like the 2-4-2 J class layout.
PMCO 757: 2 class. Lie flat J seats (cramped), AVOD in Y.
PMCO 762: 2 class. Recliners in J, cycle PTV in Y. These will be gone very soon.
PMCO non refirbished 764: Recliners in J, cycle PTV in Y. these will be converted soon except for 4 764s that are in a Hawaiian version (used on HNL-SFO/DEN/IAD/EWR)
PMCO 764: 2 class lie flat, AVOD in Y with full power.
PMCO 777: 2 class lie flat, AVOD in Y with full power. No E+ yet.

I've heard that if you use PMCO's system and want to switch movies or from movie to moving map the system doesn't pause and hold your place. I think this is kind of a bummer.

I flew one last week as UA1208 EWR-MIA. I got upgraded to 4A (window seat ahead of the lavatory) and found the angled power seat rather cozy.

Yep    although the 762/764s have overhead LCDs displaying the moving map. I can't remember if the 752 or 772 does or not. Unfortunately if you exit the movie/tv show, you have to fast forward back to where you left off at something like x4. It takes forever. At least if you could skip by chapters it wouldn't be as annoying. UA's system is newer and definitely more sophisticated. I also think that visually the UA IFE program looks much better.

Regardless, both beat out the looped tapes UA used to have (and still has on the 763s in Y and the unmoded 772s). The quality is always crap and the screens are miniature.

Give it 5-10 years and we can talk about it.

No seriously, there are lots of details that will simply take a long time to either work themselves out, not the least things like fleet types, configurations, marketing needs, products etc.

This merger is still in the infancy stage.

Don't forget to add that the 777 domestic birds, plus 3 non-IPTE 777 International birds, will be transitioned into a high-density configuration that features the old United Business seats up front and perhaps an upgraded Y/Y+ experience in the back.

It's about the same as a non-refirbished CO 762 or 764. The old PTVs on PMCO aircraft tilt about 4-5 centimeters up and down and are also looped. Not much better.

Fortunately there are only about 9 such aircraft remaining in the fleet, and indications are that all should be either retired or converted to AVOD by 2013.

I may be OCD but this is the thing that bugs me the most. Not a huge deal though, so it can wait.

Still a little confused about what exactly these are being used for. Is the 767 just not being used for domestic anymore? Or is this new config being used mainland-Hawaii?

Can't speak for the CO system, but the AVOD on the UA IPTE 777 is VERY good

Does anyone know what is happening to the 2-class domestic PMUA 777s? Any type of seat or IFE upgrades?

See above -- they're getting overhauled, in a different sort of way.

Unfortunately, they pulled the overheads out with the installation of AVOD & New BF Seats.
