NZ's New Safety Video

Mon Jun 25, 2012 9:10 pm

Just wanted to share the new Air New Zealands safety video with you.

Check it out here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmcFKtzcKbQ&feature=player_embedded

I personally think it's pretty neat (especially like the background music) and adds a little spice to the topic, which maybe makes people actually watch it instead of reading newspaper.

Question:
The little "hint" there at 1:38 ("just make sure your wings are outside your thighs"), is it really better to keep the arms outside instead of inside and why?

Cheers, Sen

Hysterical, though I think it would be fitting if both actors were Kiwis. Perhaps Phil Keoghan of "The Amazing Race" anyone? This may be the first safety video I've seen that actually had me laughing.
Give me a break, I created this username when I was a kid...

I had to double check the video after reading the youtube comments -
This video is brilliant and I would certainly feel inclined to watch it onboard; the part about smoking and safety lights made me crack up.

Not until they retrain him to get rid of his fake US accent. Before any accuses me of being anti-American, there is nothing wrong with an American accent if you are actually American, but coming out of the mouth of a Kiwi it really gets on my nerves.

Glad you guys like it. It seems like the majority of youtube users does not really "get warm" with it.

I don't wanna get into a discussion about accents, as i really like all of them. I like American English, British English, African English, Australian-English and (very rarely though) the specific countries way of speaking it.
Personally started to like the "Aussi" accent (is Aussi racist?) very much when "Crocodile hunter" (Steve Irwin RIP) was aired in Germany.
An Airline should, in my opinion, of course have their stuff spoken in the local language/dialect.

Yap. Just like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-Mq9HAE62Y

Still i wonder about the "just make sure your wings are outside your thighs" thing. Anybody got an answer for that? Or am i just missing something and it's just a joke?

I've heard about "don't tilt your head back when you got nosebleed", "put your thumb outside your fist when fighting" or stuff like that, but never heard the safety-position thing and can't really explain it...

I have never seen or heard this as part of any airline's safety demo or brace position instructions. The only thing I can think of is a practicality issue. By putting your "wings" outside your "thighs" you wind up tucking yourself into a tight little ball. The only way to get your wings INSIDE your thighs would be to spread your legs ridiculously far apart, which, besides not being intuitive to begin with, probably makes you more vulnerable in a crash since you're spread over more area. Similar reason why divers in the pool try to get as small as possible.

As for the video, kinda cute, but not one of Air NZ's best, IMHO.

I think one definite thumbs down to the video is it is not really geared towards passengers whose first language is not English. The background music is noisy and the speed of the talking is just a bit quicker than the speed at which you want to remember what is being spoken about. There are multiple voices talking over one another as well a few times. I can imagine a lot of people in that category losing focus whilst watching all the graphics and just turn off from watching it. Besides, whilst I can hear the music and the voice very well at my very quiet living room on terra firma, I am not sure if I will still be able to listen to the whole thing in a moving plane filled with people chatters and engine noise.

watching this video reminds me of the standard BA safety video. The narrator in that video narrated the message in a more formal way and whilst it is obviously less entertaining the clarity of the message there is very clear.
