UA To Get Their First B-787 In September

Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:06 am

Well, according to the local news in Seattle, UA might get their first B-787-8 in September 2012. However UA won't put her into airline service right away. They are planning up to 100 hours of training flying time, proving runs, and maintenance training. It looks like they will seat about 219 pax, 36 United BusinessFirst flat-bed seats, 63 Economy Plus seats and 120 seats in Economy.

I have searched and couldn't find this posted anywhere.

Well, those proving runs etc. should be the typical sCO intro 2-step in and out of IAH to EWR/MCO/DEN/LAX and what not. When will Sept schedules be uploaded? They should begin to be reflected. Right now DEN-NRT is the only route on the web.

Only 120 economy seats?!?! Even a319s hold more than that! I mean, I knew they were using them for long-and-thin routes, but I didn't think they meant THAT thin!

You might be misunderstanding the size of the plane. It can seat more than a 762 and close to that of a 763. ANA does not have nearly as many seats packed into their long haul 788's.

Thats just Y -. There is 63 Y+ as well dont forget and dont forget this is not like a separate cabin for UA, so total Y is 183 a good size cabin

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. As i recall, A 788 cabin is longer than a 763, and the plane is wider (either 8 or 9 abreast vs 7 or rarely 8). You'll see many 767s, including ANAs seating more than 788s because they are more likely to be configured for domestic or regional flights so have smaller business class seats, etc.

And here is the seat map - http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...ight/aircraft/787/800/default.aspx

I believe CO was originally planning 2+4+2 for their 787-8s, but this will now be 3+3+3.

I guess your right, but it still seems like a small amount of seats. Though I do also realize that 36 lie-flats and 63 economy plus seats do take up some room.

Mgt at EWR said they'll run EWR-LAX/SFO from day 1. Looking forward to using this product at UA.

I know the UA B-788 will not be visiting DFW, So, I guess I'll have to fly down to IAH to get a ride on her. Do the UA B-787s have GEnx engines or Trent-1000s?

Any chance of UA flying the B-787 IAH-JFK or BOS? I know EWR is their big NE hub and of that's as far as i go, I suppose I could take a continuing flight to BOS from EWR.

Little to no chance...honestly, you have better odds playing the lotto. Honestly, I'd be a bit surprised if IAD or ORD...or even SFO for that matter get to see the 787 early on...at least with that there is a chance.

Why is that? Isn't ORD the HQ of United? Isn't this the first 787 for UA not CO which is now gone. I know that this is the one that was originally ordered by CO, but isn't this a differen't airline now? And where will it be delivered? Why not ORD?

100 hours of training flying time, proving runs, and maintenance training.

Then I'd expect any UA base to have a chance. Isn't SFO UA's primary maintenace hub? Isn't BOS still a UA maintenance base? I'd say just about every major UA station has an equal chance of seeing a 787 visit during these proving flights.

No...the first 787 was a CO ordered machine and right now there are still 2 different labor groups, so the bird will probably be delivered via MCO/LAX or IAH to sCO pilots. As of now, the only planned 787 pilot base is IAH, I stress 'as of now'. Up until this point the first routes that I have been hearing are the ones that I've stated...every time one of these threads pops up lol.

Very true...that's why I said 'early on'. There are only going to be 5 or 6 by the end of the year. I expect them to make their way to other stations, just not the first couple. I could very well be wrong though.

When the 777 went into service with UA, I think the first two aircraft were working DEN-ORD-IAD-LHR, if memory serves me correctly. I remember specifically going out to ORD and watching a 777 push back on a departure for IAD.

I think we are forgetting that the birds are sco and not sua, until the pilots group are unified...these are sCO birds. Now nothing precludes UA from opening or moving the current/planned 787 base

I'd say it's by any means absolutely a big airplane, just like a 763 or A300 is, but it's certainly not huge. If you're standing 3,000 feet away watching one land, the size likely won't impress you, but if you stand next to her on the ramp you'll wonder how something that big can fly.

Funny how much the human perspective and what's deemed "impressive" can change so much in just a few quick decades.

Exactly. In the 1960s, the 707 and DC-8 were the "big" airplanes. To the generation that grew up flying on DC-6s, DC-7s, Constellations, and even DC-3s, these planes were huge.

Even when UA was only UA, airplanes were not delivered to ORD. New build airplanes typically went to SFO which is their maintenance headquarters and formerly their engineering headquarters. I'd expect delivery to be to IAH, MCO or SFO.

I think the reason it doesn't look that big is because it sits quite low to the ground.

Interesting that the seats on the right side of the aircraft are J-K-L, is this new? I always remember H-J-K for those seats on long range aircraft. I suppose it doesn't really matter but I don't recall ever seeing a seat L.

Well "L" is the 12th letter of the alphabit, they never use the letter "I", so not they won't be using the "H" either?

I've stood next to her and she is big, but now days the term big is mostly reserved for the likes of the behemoth from Airbus and the B748, those are BIG while the 788 is simply a classy sleek sexy lady with huge lungs!

I don't think adam42185 is saying that. The actual size of an airplane is relitive, as is its range. Today there are lots of big airplanes with an 8,000 + nm range. There are several more if you look at the 6,000 nm and 4,000 nm ranged class airplanes. Your B-767-200ER is considered a big airplane and with long legs. The B-787-8 is bigger than the B-767-200ER and has more range. If you are at an airport, like LIT that only sees mostly B-737-800s and MD-80s you think of them as big airplanes, then when the occasional B-747F comes into town, you think it is huge.

I've been told by very reliable sources that the 788's will do their proving runs on Hub to hub markets almost exclusively. When you get a shiny new airplane you've been waiting 10 years for you best believe they will get as much publicity out of that sucker as possible. I bet it hits all 8 domestic hubs within the first month or so.

One week ago I was in FRA on one of those wonderful buses they have for tired long-haul arriving passengers. We were right under a 747-4 and I stood there under it and REALLY was awed by her, "how can something that huge, made of metal fly?? And over and over again for 30 years." we then passed under a 767 and I was no less awed.

I can't wait to be able to do that with the 787 and I guess I will have to wait until UA flies it to FRA. Where I can stand under her and gaze at her as a puny human.
