Air Finland Declares Bankruptcy

Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:09 pm

Air Finland has just announced quitting all flights starting today, due to high fuel prices and too much competition in leisure flights, says CEO Mika Helenius.

...just tooooo sad to see all these wonderful airlines go bust, due to the brain children of stocks and banks. Had we no crisis, I am sure they would have made it.

Kinda sick that in this day and age, the banks can make or break the airlines.

You beat me to it telling about this. I once applied and got accepted for Air Finalnd as Cabin Crew. At the end I chose not to accept the place on the course. If I had decided otherwise, I'd be unemployed now. I hope all those who lost their jobs today will find new ones soon!

And another link: http://www.hs.fi/talous/Air+Finland+...iin++lennot+peruttu/a1305577884461 (also in Finnish)

There are about 1000 passengers which are in holiday, and they have a Air Finland ticked that don't count now anymore..!

Sorry for double post but now it is on their website: http://www.airfinland.fi/oy_air_finland_ltd/uutiset_ja_tiedotteet/ (finnish)

This is the statement in english:
Oy Air Finland Ltd, has ceased operations, leaving the bankruptcy petition. All Air Finland flights from 26.06.2012 has been canceled. We are deeply sorry for any ensuing inconvenience to customers.

Always a shame to here - I flew on OH-AFI back when it was leased to (then almost bankrupt) airline FlyZoom for my flight to JFK - the plane wasn't anything to write home about but I did like their colourscheme.

I hope for the best for all the crew involved with them.

On a side note, who do you think will take their 757s?

Kev.

Very sad to hear. I love their paint jobs on the 757. I sure hope the workers find work quick. I don't understand why airlines like those in the US can go chapter 11, and continue operating while fixing itself. Is this not an option on the other side of the pond?

No, finnair has actually 4 B757 and these will be sold, so I dont think that Finnair will buy these because Finnair is phasing out the B757.
Finnair will be an all Airbus Fleet, Embraer 190 are going to Flybe Nordic I guess.

Yes, Finnair only has four 757's left. They all will be gone soon (not for sale, those all are leased) and replaced by the new A321 with sharklets from 2013, AY was the launch customer for that a/c type.

Yet another Lila Designed airline livery leaves the skies. Delsey/VG, Air Holland, Air Finland, VLM (though the latter was purchased before it went belly up, I think). Seriously, it's like the Airways Magazine curse.

That was my thought.

Eventually I see FedEx working with Boeing for a wingleted certified 757BCF. But that is all about the money and there are enough non-wingleted 757s for now.

No, not again.....I think we lost a lot of good airlines between 2010 and now!! Next in line, based on what i read (or still read) is Kingfisher airlines in India and American Airlines has been in trouble in recent months.

Semi qualified guess: Going back home to the owner - the leasing company.

When Malev folded a while ago their planes painted one long line on Flightradar from Budapest to (I think) Shannon.

Except for the L-1011 and B777ER's. Maybe they do not want to have two different engines on their B757. Of course they have two different engines on their B777 fleet and three on their B767?

I remember sitting in Helsinki airport early in the morning. It was quiet and I was just sitting, looking out at the parked planes in front of me. All the sudden, I heard this incredible roar...it was an Air Finland 757 screamin' down the runway!! I never flew on the airline but I don't think I'll ever forget that. Sorry to hear of their misfortune.

More an unhappy coincidence, aerokiwi. I am sure Lila was able to create marketing for these airlines at a lower cost than some of the larger design companies. All of these airlines were not very large operations.

*Side Note: I designed Passenger Safety Cards for about 7 years. ZOOM!, Canjet, and jetsgo were all users (The variation here, is that Canjet came back as an independant again, after Canada 3000 failed. Canjet had been merged into C3, and was able to restart, by the parent company that had sold the operation to C3 in the first place.*

My thoughts go out to Air Finland's employees, and the hope they are able to find work again soon.

Very sad to see such a nice and good airline fail.

Quoting chootie (Reply 2):
Kinda sick that in this day and age, the banks can make or break the airlines.

And do so because the complete, private owned banking sector is broken. Look how the rating agencies rate the best banks today, after they failed with their infinite greed. All this is the consequence of the deregulation of the US banking sector under Reagan and Bush.

Quoting cat3dual (Reply 9):
Better the banks make or break them. The other option being the state-run method.

It cannot be worse than today with an inoperable private sector. If banks that get money for 0% dont lend it to AA rated companies for 3%, but prefer to gamble with it as investment banks, investing into papers which are D rated, then I prefer state run banks - not airlines.

Quoting cat3dual (Reply 9):
Airlines that do not provide positive returns will be shut down, on way or the other. And rightly so

But today even airlines and other enterprises with a positive return get shut down, if they are lower than the greed of the banking industry. In the US they have chapter 11 which is de facto a state bailout, outside of the US they bite the grass

I don't have any photos I'm afraid, but I see it every day driving to and from work! The winglets haven't been removed, the aircraft never had them in the first place. It was OH-AFJ and is now N967FD. It flew in a few days ago before there was the news of them going bust. Is/was due to ferry out to FedEx later today.

OH-AFM and AFI were recently ferried to Perpignan with subsequent callsigns OHAFM and OHAFI. Presumably the positioning was done by the owner, ILFC. I believe Perpignan has been the last destination of many aircraft, but time will show what happens to these ones.

AFI is "only" 16 years old, but has a very outdated interior. A likely candidate for cargo conversion?
AFM again is almost 20 years old, but has a Y235 charter interior with those industry standard Recaro seats, so it might still be a good workhorse for some charter airline.

Sad to see another airline leave the skies but we only have one measure of success in business and that is profit.

If it was such a great airline people would have voted with their feet and kept it flying.

The 757s will probably find their way to Africa or a minor S.American country.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I can see the two Air Finland 757's going to Jet2, as a replacement for the two leased Allegiant 757's which will return to the States later this year.

As for the Finnair 757's, in my opinion a Russian carrier like Nordwind or UTAir is very likely.
