Last Airline To Fly The Dehavilland Comet.

What was the last air carrier to fly the Comet? I know there were not any US air carriers to fly the Comet. Mexicana had the Comet in their fleet.When did Mexicana retire their Comets. Canadian Pacific was another operator in North America. How many airframes were built and how many survive today?

Not absolutely sure but Dan-Air was one of the last operators.
Canadian Pacific never actually operated a Comet either, their 1st delivery crashed in Karachi on it's delivery flight, and the 2nd was cancled. They also had a Comet 2 order was that was cancled by the groundings.
Pacific Western ordered Comets later (IVCs) but again never took delivery.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Well the Royal Air Force still flies them. But my guess is also Dan Air for commercial service.

Dan Air London were the last (and largest) operator of the Comet.

If memory serves, they ended up with 49 at one point as other carriers sold them on.

The last commercial airline service was with Dan Air on Sunday 9 November 1980. The aircraft was Comet 4C, G-BDIW.

The RAe, a test division of the Royal Air Force, flew their last true Comet in october 1997 already. The RAF flew the Nimrod til last summer, due to budget cuts. The last ever Nimrod flight probably took place on 29 july 2011.

Indeed Dan-Air was the last airline flying them. They bought 49 but never flew more then about 12 at the same time.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

A third of all Comet 4s went to their end via Dan-Air London.

One interesting operator in the Americas was AREA of Ecuador. Interestingly, the only pics of the operational aircraft in the database are of the interior.

I even cannot think about what would happen if something similiar would have taken place in our time.

The 2nd undelivered CP Comet 1 went to BOAC in August 1953 as G-ANAV. Only operated for 8 months until the Comet 1s were grounded following the two BOAC inflight disintegrations. It later went to the British Royal Aircraft Establishment and was used in the investigation of the cause of the accidents.

That undelivered CP Comet 1 appears at the beginning of this footage from the 1952 Farnborough air show.

Another Comet, probably one of the prototypes (in BOAC livery) is shown taking off (with rocket assist) a little later.

It's interesting that in those days, only British-built aircraft appeared at Farnborough. If that restriction still applied today it would be a very short event!

Since we on the topic on the Comet, a question: How loud was the interior noise level from those straight turbo jets engines right next to the cabin? I imagine the same could be asked about the Tu-104.

Yes, but at that time there was no www and my only source was reading the Jetstream magazine every month (was to stingy to buy Coincat in addition...). I was extremely lucky to see the IL 14 that was ferried to the Speyer museum and the Liberia World DC 4 landing in FRA for the Berlin airlift memorial but I never saw this Comet.

I well remember when Dan Air was sold to BA for £1. The News announcer said 'Today the airline Dan Dare was sold to BA for £1' I always wish I'd got to fly with Dan Dare!

I flew on a Dan Air Comet 4C from LGW to PMI in the winter of 1979/1980. It sat on the ground for about 90 minutes, then I hopped on it and flew back to LGW. I could tell the end was near for this aircraft, so this was my one and only chance to fly on a classic.

I thought I was crazy, (It cost about $140 CDN rt), but then I realized about 20 of the passengers were doing the same thing!

Dan Air retired the type about 6 months later, the last commercial operator.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I used to live close to Teesside Airport and I vaguely remember Dan-Air Comets operating from there circa March 1973 - Sept 1974. Interesting to note that I had already flown on a 747 by then...
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Worked on this baby from 1980 to 1982 alongside the nimrod MR2 prototypes at Boscombe.

Some of the best days of my life flying over the Irish Sea for 8 to 10 hours at a time testing the Searchwater 2000 radar in the Nimrods....
any landing you can walk away from is a good one......

I am wondering the same thing. Passengers over the wing were just inches away from the inboard engine. Louder than the back row of a DC-9? Would love to know anyone's recollection of flying on a Comet (or Nimrod) - sounds, performance, quirks. Anyone?

At least one other aircraft crashed on its delivery flight. Swissair's 3rd Convair 440 crashed at SNN on it's delivery flight (arriving from Gander) in July 1956, killing the 4 crew. It was the first Convair 440 hull loss.

And Braniff's first 707-227 (the first of only 5 707-220s built, all for Braniff) crashed near SEA in October 1959 on an acceptance and training flight a few days before it was due to be delivered, killing 4 of the 8 aboard. It was the 2nd 707 hull loss, following an AA 707-123 on a training flight 2 months earlier.

If it helps, I flew a Dan Air student "charter" from Athens to London Gatwick via Edinburgh late Summer, 1972. Plane made a hell of a lot of noise, but they served really great tea. I still remember wondering how anyone could cross the Atlantic with that roar going on in their heads. This from a then devoted B-707 transatlantic flier.

In front of the engines, it was like sitting in row 20 on a DC-9 .... loud. Abeam the engines it wasn't much louder, but you could also hear the engine "mechanics" during start up. It was a very unique noise, and something I think you would hear in any jet today ... if you were sitting on the cowl during start-up. As you got further and further to the rear, it was even louder!

There were very few seats aft of the engine exhaust, but in the rear galley/lavs, the noise was almost unbearable.

I remember wondering how loud the generation earlier than the Comet must have been, if the Comet were a huge advance in comfort. And, in its day, the Comet was a marvel of engineering!

The most annoying thing? A hydraulic system incompatible with anything else flying. A different for of hydraulic oil, which meant that you had to use Comet specific oil, seals, etc.

The same went for the Nimrod. Rather annoying when you run out of supplies in Cold Lake in the middle of winter.
