Question: What's Going To Be Next For AS At PDX?

Wed Jun 27, 2012 11:00 am

With a real jump in growth from AS here at PDX this year so far, I'm fully convinced AS is dedicated to the PDX market for a very long time, what does anyone here think could potentially be the next city AS connects to the Rose City? I was thinking EWR or maybe a return to MCO. Other thoughts I have include some QX flying as well like YYC or MRY. What do those in the know, and those armchair CEO's think? I'm even thinking new cities like SCK. Just curious to hear your thoughts on this subject, Thanks!

I'd like to see either MSY or MKE, personally. I think AS could definitely succeed in MKE with the sudden void left by F9.

I think SCK is to close to both SJC and SMF to be very viable.

MRY.

I seem to recall this being on the short list.

As far as new AS service goes, I think we'll see a little more SEA growth and some more CA growth before we see more PDX growth. Although granted, they may try something like ORD.

Maybe, but I'm sure AS would start those out of SEA long before - if ever - out of PDX. The OP was specifically asking about speculative future service from PDX.

My vote would be on EWR, PVR, SJD, AUS and FLL maybe if AS wants to expand more from PDX.

PDX-FAI

Nice idea but I don't see it. I thought of PDX-JNU also. There's a market for a few SEA-FAI flights; and a few PDX-ANC flights, but I don't see there being enough for AS to justify any non-SEA to non-ANC flights.

I imagine AS will see how the current expansion sticks before doing more. I know more planes are coming, but not a ton, so adding new routes would require cuts somewhere else until they get those birds.

Long term, (and as a loyal MVPGold) I don't see how many more routes AS can try without the regional economy getting stronger. I have always hoped for a PDX-MIA or even some of the smaller secondary cities that are currently served via SEA. I just can't see it happening short term.

The partnership with Delta is very strong, so the map is covered fairly well all things considered. DEN and RNO would be good ads, but AS pulled out for a reason....

I'm happy with the love shown and can only imagine 2015 or so when things are looking better economically, that we'll get some more routes to new places.

very good list, all quite possible and doable, couldn't have done better myself, except to say that PDX-DEN is already served by F9, UA and WN, which is the reason AS gave when they announced why they were discontinuing the route. Who wants to be the fourth wheel, eh, although that's the story more than not with DEN, so.....? Then they added PDX-ORD right afterward with the free plane, and ORD seems to be working well for them.

About as close as SRS to OAK or SFO, or MRY to SJC or SFO. But if RDD and ACV didn't work, maybe SCK won't either, who knows but the guys in route planning at HQ.

Nice lists, yeah I think AS will connect the dots more than add new service, Horizon will add new cities IMHO.

AS already flies PDX-ORD, ever since AA left the market, AS carries folks to ORD for AA overseas connections.
