CLT To Open New East Terminal On Saturday

Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:32 pm

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...te-airport-opens-new-terminal.html

The expansion includes:

-A new security checkpoint connected with Concourse E
-An expanded international arrivals area
-An expanded lobby area featuring floor to ceiling windows

I was down at CLT and the whole setup looks VERY nice. The East Terminal expansion will become a model for the rest of the Main Terminal, which will be refurbished to look like the new East Terminal.

At the bottom of the article, I found an interesting quote from Jerry Orr, regarding an AA/US merger.

"Orr said he expects that if the merger is completed, Charlotte Douglas will see more international flights, including more traffic from American’s international hub in Miami.

“This would be a very well-positioned hub for a very large airline,” said Orr. “You either grow, or you risk stagnating, withering on the vine."

Maybe he knows something we don't.

From what I've seen, He's got a lot more planned....2 runways (one next to 18C-36C, one east of 18L-36R), concourses parallel to the terminal. which extend out and across Runway 5/23 (which will be closed when a 4th parallel has been completed), and the new international "F" concourse after the rental car lots are demolished. It will be interesting to see if a merger of AA/US changes these plans.

Indeed. There are some impressive plans at CLT. The plan is to open up those two other parallel runways, then close the crosswind runway, then build three concourses parallel to the current main terminal, connected by tram.

Let us pray that this new terminal will ease delays. As I mentioned in a thread... CLT is delay ridden.

Part of the problem is that the current infrastructure wasn't designed to have this many passengers a year. CLT is probably the largest airport in the US and second largest (after I think BKK) to utilize only one terminal for operations. While this way is cost effective for airlines, it makes it harder to move aircraft around the field, and it often results in long walks for customers.

This new terminal expansion will only likely ease security checkpoint delays, and it easier for arriving INTL pax to connect.

The terminal setup is reasonably efficient except for the north side of E, which is a perpetual chokepoint. I've spent longer waiting for access to E than in the air on some flights recently.

In what regards? I'd have to agree with the other poster, CLT is not very good for moving about the field quickly, and connections can be a hassle. Its a decent airport though, functional and clean - nothing terribly striking about it though.

The airfield, not the terminal. A, B, C and D can move aircraft on and off the gates quickly, and while taxi times in from 18R/36L are long, most taxi times aren't too bad. The long waits for takeoff are more a function of US' scheduling than of the airfield.

Traffic going into the North Ramp (E Concourse, north side of D) has to go through an area only big enough for one aircraft at a time. When you have inbound and outbound traffic it gets piled up. If an aircraft pushes off the east end of D, it makes it that much worse as now NO traffic is going through this area. With a southbound operation the aircraft have absolutely nowhere to go since the parallel taxiway is usually full of aircraft in live for takeoff. Add in a couple of RJs waiting at spot 9 to join the east outbound flow and it turns into a disaster. Rapidly. There's really no good fix either.

One of these type scenarios with Lufthansa pushing, and another heavy pushing on the south side of D, northbound operation, I have blocked 2.2 hrs going CLT-GSP. No kidding. I think we were in the air .3 or .4 of that.

They could do what DL does in ATL and forbid regional flights from leaving outstations early. The last long wait I had was a CAE-CLT flight that probably pushed 20 minutes early and arrived CLT around our scheduled departure time. Needless to say, we became real good friends with Taxiway Mike, where we parked for 35 minutes.

Agreed. For the most part, CLT is quieter than ATL, but CLT can have way more walking. A friend of mind connected from UA in A to gate E28 for a USX flight the other day, and he said the walk wasn't so pleasant.

Quoting DashTrash (Reply 9):

All this tells me that E should have been built further away from D. However, thinking about it now, E was designed in the late 1990s, no one expected CLT to have todays traffic levels.

Apparently there was a letter sent to the outstations telling them that they can't push flights more then 5 min early due to them arriving sometimes 25-30 min early in the hub (CLT/PHL) Several times we have had Express flights show up 25 min early only to look and see they left 15 min early from the out stations. It really does no good to leave early cause when you get to the destination you are going to sit until a gate opens and even if we do have an open gate the window we use is 20 min, so if your more then 20 min early you are going to sit no matter what.

The flight I was talking about was the last departure of the day from CAE. I expect the very early push may not have been a coincidence.

You can push the plane early if everyone that is on the flight checked in. It doest work from the CLT,PHX,PHL because there a lot of people coming from a lot of other planes.

Example. I was flying from MLB to CLT we left 20 min early because everyone checked in and was at the gate

The other issue with E, at least from a passenger facility perspective, is that there is still a relative dearth of passenger services in that area, after you leave the mid-airport "food court." It's not uncommon to remain in E while connecting, and the walk back to that area is a long one if you want a meal (or even a decent bookstore or newsstand).

Or it's just wishful thinking...

Yep.... Seems a bit hyperbolic to me. Why would the combined carrier shift flights from an established hub to CLT? CLT serves its markets, and MIA serves its markets.

Yeah I would have to agree with that. Last flight of the day, get it out of there asap, been there, done that.
