Possibly could've been a charter. Weird landing at AZA and not Sky Harbor but it could've been the sandstorm that just blew through here. That thing was nuts driving home.

If i'm not mistaken, I believe that is a prison charter chartering Hawaii dept of corrections prisoners to/from the prison contractor on the mainland. Hawaii has been cotracting out prisons on the mainland as existing prison space is tight in the islands. They've been doing this for quite some time now...albeit a political hot button issue.

I'd seen one on flightaware the other day so I'd guess the dust storm is not at fault. It was also a Sun Country 738.

Edit: Guess it was yesterday!

The Hawaii Department of Public Safety (PSD) contracts with Corrections Corporation of America to house prison inmates at the Saguaro Correctional Center and Red Rock Correctional Center, both located about 60 miles south of AZA in Eloy, Arizona. PSD seems to contract with SY for flights to transfer inmates between Arizona and Hawaii, so that's likely what this flight was.

Over by the 5 Md 80s 3 doj/2 falcon justice flights apron. That apron is busy with the barons, 414s, the bae 146, neptunes
And the ( Pawnee/ agcat/ I don't know ... Thrush) fire suppression aircraft. The dc-10
Tanker is at gateway these days
Over by the crowded ramp...curious

SY does have a contract with DOJ to transport inmates. They also have had DOJ flights out of LAS to HNL. SY has become a good source of planes in the DOD/DOJ market. My guess is they are giving the Govt a better deal with 737's then other airlines with larger aircraft. SY has worked hard to get certified by DOD and get their ETOPS certificate for these flights.

Aww the prison charters, used to see them fly in on MDs,737s,757s, and even once a 767

SY ops in PHX are seasonal... This is their off season right now... The DOJ do have operations at AZA

All DOJ and ICE flights are done on the cargo ramp right next to the fire station... This is also where Air Force One parked a couple months ago and now the fire fighting aircraft park there as well.

Usually, there is a flight that leaves AZA at four or five in the afternoon going to south america and returns at one, two, or three am. But if space is full over on the cargo ramp there is former ATP ramp and also the ramp area on the other side of the parking lot near the terminal.

They used to do DOJ flights right next to G4 operations.

Wait a second........Are the SY planes ETOPS? How come they don't fly to Hawaii normally from somewhere?

I for one, would not want to see several prisoners being led through Terminal 3 on their way to a SY flight to jail, and vise versa.

There is a very secure DOJ facility at AZA/IWA, so it makes more sense. I am sure landing fees are also cheaper, travel time to/from the jails are shorter and I am sure several other reasons!

The OKC airport has a prison with jet bridges attached to it. Check it out: http://goo.gl/maps/0Cuu

Actually, there was an article in the Airways magazine detailing the logistics of such flights, but I can't remember the specific issue as it was published many years ago. Quite an interesting read though.

It doesn't have to be a federal crime. Remember, these flights from Hawaii are for the State of Hawaii. You just need to get sentenced to prison by the State court. Just remember to take some pictures of the interior of the aircraft.

There is something about a prison being near an airport... I hope background checks for employees are a little more detailed

it's more common than we'd suspect. It's an acceptable land use: no NIMBYs! I know there's a prison adjacent to EWR.

Funny you should mention that...
