JetBlue Names San Juan A “Focus City”

Thu Jun 28, 2012 5:47 pm

To celebrate opening of Terminal-A, the airlines new home in San Juan, CEO Dave Barger announced San Juan was now formally one of the companies “Focus Cities”.
With a peak of 38 flights (45 in Puerto Rico in total), JetBlue said it looks forward to further expansion at the airport.

Pretty amazing how far SJU has come for B6. From single late night red-eye services to a principle network gateway.

Compared to other stations, 38 daily flights is more or less what DL has fom TPA to all of its hubs. I know DL is a larger airline but still.

Anyways, good for SJU!!

B6 today is the largest airline in SJU, good for them. People in Puerto Rico rave about them and their on time performance. I was in Puerto Rico this past weekend and visited Terminal A and I must say it looks very nice.

Not just in Puerto Rico, but everywhere. I fly B6 as often as I can because of that exact reason.

Your signature says you have flown an A320 a total of one time, and a 190 never. How "often" do you fly B6?

Anyway, sounds good for SJU. I had never really thought of going there, but my mom was in Puerto Rico on a cruise lately, and she said she absolutely loved it and foudn it very beautiful. Sounds like it is worth checking out. Now if only B6 would fly to Canada and make the connection easier!

Next flight.... who knows.

Now don't get me wrong B6 is the best fly them on a weekly basis and they are the best airline to be on economy, but they are always always late.

38 is pretty significant. How many departures does AA have at SJU nowadays?

It's sort of a meaningless designation but SJU has become important to B6 and vice versa. Interestingly SJU has gone from a peak of around 40 destinations w/ AA to about 25 on AA/B6.

I have never really been late on B6. I was only late on my last trip due to weather related issues which they can't control. How have they been late? Please explain.

Great for San Juan. I think San Juan could turn into a huge hub for any airline due to its location and i'm glad B6 is that airline.

Well....once. But itwas still good and I DO try to book them as often as possible and so far I've only been able to fly them once.......so far.

But I do come from a big traveling family, and many of them are frequent JetBlue flyers. For a reason.

Isn't B6 also the largest airline into DR ? I guess their Carib focus is really paying dividends

On the not so exciting side, OAK/IAD has been massively pulled down, the SLC experiment didn't exactly pan out, and AUS expansion seems stalled for the time being

If it weren't for the strict rules of TrueBlue program, I'd be flying them left and right

From what I am seeing on-time departures from SJU for B6 from 01-JAN-2012 to yesterday is around the 80% mark (19.99% late departures from SJU) and a little over 80% for arrivals (18.14% late arrivals into SJU) if I am reading the statistics correctly:

Sorry folks, I entered a hyperlink in my post and it doesn't appear to be working correctly for some reason. But, it is available online through the DOT.

I wonder if DB's 'focus' designation and happy talk about growth is marking SJU as its territory for the folks on Lemmon Ave at Love Field. It is great news for SJU and Puerto Rico...dont get me wrong...but given the recent chatter about WN plans for the airport, he could be 'planting the flag'.

'focus city' could have a definition for JetBlue, regarding how many actual ground employees would be hired, flying personal home based etc. Anybody know?

38 departures is nothing to sneeze at for an airline JetBlue size. For example long time focus city at LGB is 32.

or it could also just be a marketing term. I'm surprised they hadn't been calling SJU a focus city already.

Congrats to Jeblue and I have actually flown Jetblue on many flights from East Coast to San Juan!

BTW, does anyone know if Terminal A is connected with other terminals airside? Does one need to exit security if connecting to another airline same day or to a gate at Terminal C?

Thanks,
Carfield

Yes, it is connected. I was just down there a few weeks ago right after they moved into the new terminal and there were really no places to get food yet in Terminal A, and was able to walk to another terminal to grab lunch before my flight. It's a long walk, but it is connected.

It's a really long walk if you arrive on an international fllight (SXM, SDQ) and are connecting to a flight out of terminal A.

It's not that long. OW flights are now arriving between terminal C and D and AA flights are arriving at the upper numbered gates of terminal D. Maybe a 5-10 minute walk depending on your gate location. Connecting from terminal A to terminal D in PHL is a longer walk, and you at least have the moving sidewalk.

The downside is that all the restaurants in SJU are outside security so if you're brave enough to face the lines at the checkpoints (Terminal C's checkpoint has the shortest lines of all), you're better off exiting the terminal.

To where would someone connect to in SJU with B6? Aren't most flights pure O/D?

They have a lot of connectors in JFK, BOS, MCO, and SJU

I know that, but from where-- to where would a person connect to at SJU? If i'm not mistaken, the intra-carribbean flights are not timed for connections to most of North America. But this is just me with a bad memory.

I just recently flew SXM-SJU-FLL both E190s and both great flights. Its a great little (now not so little) thing they are growing in an island that has a huge population and needs good, dedicated service. Its a perfect solution to AA's exit as many Puerto Rican's travel back and forth to NY. To answer the question tho, thats just one of many options

I work on the ramp in Austin for B6 and there are some rumors floating around that an AUS-SJU flight might be added in the near future. Of course nobody will no for sure until there's an official announcement but it would work well. We get quite afew pax going to San Juan and the carribean and they'd appreciate not having to connect in JFK. If Jet Blue had more planes they'd have no problem opening another gate or two. Austin is good market, who knows, maybe we'll be the next focus for them...

Funny you should mention that. I noticed a couple of months ago that United - who used to have Gates 21 & 23, has now switched to Gates 23 & 25. Gate 21 is vacant (according to the airport's concourse map) and it's right next to Gate 19 - the gate JetBlue currently uses.

DCA fits well into their plans then, guess B6 already knew they were building a focus city long before they applied for their slot exemption, maybe if they did mention they'd be connecting to a focus city might have been the thing that tipped the scales in JetBlue's favor, thus B6 getting the award, either way no matter, glad to see B6 doing well in their expansion south. How far can the current fleet B6 has, expand out of SJU? Like how deep into S. America, or how far into the mainland? Or could we see the rumored widebody aircraft B6 is looking for doing some longer routes to S. America out of the then SJU hub?

The current B6 fleet could make it as far south as Northern Brazil and Ecuador (to the west). That being said there is very little market for these routes out of San Juan. CCS would make sense, however, since the Venezuelan govt. is basically not authorizing new US carriers to enter Venezuela CCS-SJU won't materialize anytime soon.

I think SJU-BOG could work, AV runs charters so there has to be some sort of demand for the flight. But if any deep South American expansion goes on it'll be once the renovations are done at FLL. MCO would also see some service too. Also
weren't there strong rumors of B6 starting FLL-MAO a while back?

SJU-BOG could work

B6 already flies the BOG-MCO-JFK and the FLL-BOG segments; both on a daily basis.
I'm not clear if the demand is there for one more flight. Furthermore, the existence of any SJU-BOG flight would be primarily focused in connections through SJU and B6 is already deploying two consolidated routes as pointing out above.

Regards.
