1979 PIA Advertisement

Sun Jul 01, 2012 4:19 pm

No explanation necessary.

I realize that this probably didn't raise eyebrows when it was published, but in hindsight it seems incredibly creepy and ironic.

Please don't turn this thread political

Wow (shiver). Can't help but wonder if that spawned any "bright" ideas. Unreal.

I came across that ad a few months ago....

I actually had to google it and see it if was real since it seemed so absolutely unbelievable.

There have been previous threads on this. One here.
PIA WTC/NYC Ad (by Delta767-400 Apr 9 2008 in Civil Aviation)

More on the history of that ad, and a photo of the ad as it appeared in a French magazine, Le Point. PIA then had 5th freedom service ORY-JFK about twice a week.

That image is haunting. The dark black and white adds to noir of the whole thing.

I suppose it's a bit creepy but the WTC was the symbol of New York for the duration of their lives, and if anything even more so in the 70s cos that was the decade they were built. So it hardly rates as a coincidence that PIA should have put 2 and 2 together and wound up with this.

I remember BA had an ad in the 80s which showed Manhattan (the island) flying over the top of London like a massive spaceship ("We bring New York to you" or similar), and the Twin Towers were featured heavily in the airborne version of NY. Which reminds me of the Get Your War On comic strip, where two cartoon office workers are talking, and one says, What would it have taken to get Pres Bush to put down that book The Pet Goat on 9/11 [Bush kept reading kids book The Pet Goat for seven minutes in a classroom after he received the news re 9/11 attacks]? And the other cartoon character replies, Maybe if someone had flown the World Trade Center into the Pentagon? But was that satirical attack on Bush inspired by BA's ad?

I don't think anyone thinks anything was inspired by the ad, but it really is kind of eerie in hindsight.

Thats very freaky!
Not just the concept but the fact thats its PIA, an airline from a country with strong Al Qaeda links!

Came across this ad a while back as well. Very chilling..

Reminds me of an AA ad where a jet appears to "flies toward" the Twin Towers.

These were innocent times.

I don't think there's anything creepy there at all, you can't realistically connect a Terrorist act that occurred 31 years later with an advertisement in 1969, many, many years before Al Qaeda existed.

In fact the very year the US started financially supporting the Mujahideen, which would later lead to Taliban rule and make 9/11 possible.. so the picture is quite symbolic, it's indeed a foreshadowing.

I think you need to check your dates.. The soviets invaded Afghanistan in '79, Mujahideen support didn't start until later IIRC.

PIA had a myriad of European stop points, IIRC. When I first started booking travel in thee early 80's, PIA almost always had the lowest fares one-way or round-trip from New York to Europe, I think AI did the same thing for a long time. PIA back then was unreliable, late constantly, with a severe lack of service on packed 742's on their routes to N America. The few passengers I ever booked with them were not repeat customers for PK.

I don't think it's creepy at all. Is it so unusual for an ad to show an airplane with some iconic symbol of a city or country? I think it's some sort of emotional mistake to give it special significance as creepy, after the events many years since then.

I agree. Highly likely that the ad was conceived by a Western ad agency too.

I'm surprised that this old advertisement has suddenly decided to surface just now, but then again its not surprising seeing where this thread originated from and the reason behind it. Fairly typical actually.

It didn't surface just now. It surfaced in 2008. I just found it recently.

Take it from me, I rarely fly PIA myself if I can help it. We all know that the airline is in the doldrums and it would take a village to turn that airline around into what it once was but judging from this and other threads involving PIA, you say no political discussions should ensue but these opportunities to make veiled criticisms and swipes towards PIA are still fairly obvious which as I said is not surprising seeing where it comes from. Sure AI, KF, 9W, IGO, SJ are much better airlines, the whole Indian aviation industry is way ahead (although AI and KF were/are pretty much facing a brick wall) but these cracks, winks and jibes are getting pretty stale now. I see it in abundance on Indian aviation forums. Civil/commercial aviation should not distinguish or involve race, religion or politics, it unites people and brings them together and it should remain that way.

By "you," do you mean me? I can only think of 1 other post I've ever made on A.net which might be construed as a veiled criticism/swipe at PK (and it wasn't intended that way). I have no motivation to waste my time making criticisms or swipes at Pakistan's aviation industry.

I just ran across this ad, found it interesting, and posted it. There's no need to make a political issue about it.

I said so clearly in the first post:

The ad itself isn't creepy but what is incredibly errie/creepy is seeing the ad now and knowing what happened in 2001. It's almost like a preminition
Proud to fly from Manchester!
