When Will Jet2 Regenerate Their Fleet?

Sun Jul 01, 2012 10:22 pm

Jet2's fleet is really starting to show it's age, what with 737s, alot of which are over 25 years old, when will they start to replace these ancient birds in favour of more modern equipment?

They might be over 25 years old but the cabins are brand-new and the whole fleet is being re-painted as we speak. There's a lot of life left in these birds, so they won't go any time soon.

Well they have added 4 Boeing 737-800s to their fleet in recent years. Registrations are G-GDFC, G-GDFD, G-GDFF and G-GDFJ. I assume more will slowly be added to the fleet.

Only if cheap and relatively old frames are available, because they're still way more expensive when compared to the 733's and 752's, hence why the 738's are leased and the rest of the fleet is owned by the airline. One more 733 and one more 752 will join the fleet later this month by the way.

I sure hope G-GDFE is one of those to be repainted!

R.E. the fleet updates, there are actually 2 733's due in. G-GDFH is due at Bournemouth being painted and I'm sure is due at LBA soon for cabin outfitting; and the ex OO-VEG of SN will become G-GDFL; LS's first 733 with winglets.

As for this; I flew LBA - JER - EMA a few weeks ago, with LS on the way there and WW on the return. I flew out with G-GDFB and the aircraft was flawless. Seats were tidy and comfortable, cabin was extremely well presented; and that a/c is 20 and a half years ago... it looked brand new!

Compare that with G-OBMP of WW, who's first flight was exactly a month before "FB" (same age virtually) with looked limp, the seats were torn etc. and the plane looked aged. I know WW are heading out of business, but compared to Jet2 it was shocking.

IF LS maintains for their G-CEL* 733s for the next 3/4 years they'll be ok, but newer 733's are coming on the market, so as far as I'm concerned, if maintained to the same standard as the GDF* 733's they'll be fine.

It's just that G-GDFE is showing it's age on the interior, especially with being a 737QC

They follow the model of their American friends Allegiant Air; the chore type is an older airplane which they can still operate reasonably well, it's not like they still have Boeing 720s. Fuel use per passenger is on the high side but the good thing is low aquistion/rent costs and they can park the planes on days and periods when they can't fill them up profitably. A different model then easyJet and Ryanair which try to squeeze out max hours on their newer fleets.
Of course both Allegiant and Jet2 look forward what to do when their fleet really starts to fall apart, Jet2 will eventually buy more 738s when airlines like Transavia, Ryanair, Air Berlin start to withdraw cheaper 12 year or older models en masse and these prices drop, so far even 1999 built 738s are still quite expensive. I see Jet2 still pick up a few newer 737-300s in the next 2 years but then start to switch to 738s to slowly roll over to NGs til 2020. Maybe a few cheaper 73Gs as well.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
