Wow!! Very good news for The Netherlands, and ofcourse large parts of germany and Belgium. I
just came back yesterday, having had 4 flights with Ryanair BUD - BGY - GRQ vv ), and they are getting better and better.

Just dont expect more then a seat and you will have a good flight.

Personally I was hoping for EIN to become a base, Maastricht is too far away for me. And maybe Groningen..... 3 flights at the moment, who knows.... The GRQ-BGY had more then 140 pax both ways.

"ultra-low cost"

Crikey!

Are there some general criteria for what makes an airline ultra-low cost, or is Maastrict airport just parroting something that Ryanair invented themselves?

Actually, FR doesn't refer to itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier, but some, such as NK, do.

All the most recent press releases from Ryanair have started with "Europe’s only ultra-low cost airline" even today's press release about their latest sale does.

"Ryanair, Europe’s only ultra-low cost airline, announced that from midnight (24:00hrs) tonight, Mon 2 July, it will release 100,000 seats at fares from £12.99 for travel on Mon, Tue, Wed & Thur in July, August and September."

To pe@rsons point about it being apt to describe themselves as ultra-low cost, how does the CASK of FR stack up against U2, etc?

All converted into USD (for a different project) and examples and with average sector lengths (ASL) provided in km:

Ryanair: $0.041 - 1,170km
easyJet $0.074 - 1,110km
Jet2: $0.063 - 2,003km
Norwegian: $0.083 - 1,648km
Blu-Express: $0.09 (largely due to far shorter average sectors) - 768km
Blue Air: $0.072- 1,625km
Vueling: $0.083 - 867km

This is excellent news for MST and for me personally also, given that that's exactly where I live!

FR will only open a base in EIN when the evening and weekend restrictions are lifted.

Rotterdam was also in the picture. But given the lack of available capacity Versus high price of the available slots resulted in FR Choosing for MST as their 1st Dutch Base

They already had 11 routes out of Maastricht - Aachen Airport. Both cities are well known so I dont think it will change.
besides, its not Ryanair choosing Stockholm Skavska or Frankfurt Hahn, but the airport itself.

Although already on sale, it's odd that FR themselves haven't as yet made a public statement or issued a press release with regard to the news at MST.
