AA 777 @ STL?

Tue Jul 03, 2012 10:05 pm

My friend visiting STL now and he swears that he saw an AA 777 at STL today. I'm very skeptical.....any idea what it could be?

Certainly a diversion of some sort, most likely a medical or mechanical of something into DFW perhaps?

STL gets diversions from ORD and DFW every so often. IFS capable and about 1000 empty gates to handle pax.

IFS yes, gates? From what I know there maybe only one, two at most that could be used right now to handle a 777.

No doubt they're available though...

1,000 empty gates almost a "reality" for STL -- mostly are with demolished, inoperative or abandoned jet bridges

Was there a regular AA 777 flight to STL years ago?

Not that I know of. AA had several 767-300s to STL though before they gutted it - HNL, OGG and LGW.

With all due respect to the OP's friend, we don't know how much that guy knows about airplanes. Maybe he saw a 738 from a distance and mistook it for a 777. I haven't seen any confirmation yet that a 777 actually visited STL yesterday.

Well, that's the problem with today's aircraft design - all the planes look the same!!!

Not to me they don't.   I can easily tell the difference between an A320 or 738 or a 777 or 767 or A330 from a long distance. But then again, I'm an A.net geek.

Haaahaaahaaahaaa.
(I know weird laugh, but thats very true.)

Ok, back up. I checked the details of the airport, the biggest aircraft i can see on till Tuesday is a Boeing 757 AAL1869 ( and two more AAL1149 ) from ORD. Could it be that? Ive heard this flight often gets sub for a 763. Or AAL395 from DFW?
Is that what your friend might mistaken? No Boeing 777 sorry!

It's plausible that STL would be a diversion or alternate for ORD for AA. I believe MSP is the primary alternate for AA's NRT-ORD flight. Not sure about LHR-ORD, if they'd go into DTW or down to STL. However, we've seen no indication that the occurred yesterday.

My guess is the OP's buddy mistook something else for a 777 in his enthusiasm. Case closed.

The only aircraft that I could find that might be confused with the 777 is a 757 at STL yesterday.

Not sure if AA sends 738s into STL now. The SNA flight was a 738, but that's long gone now. I'm sure the guy didn't mistake the Eskimo for an AA airplane.

Yes, I didn't state that I was searching for an AA flight into STL, but that's all I limited it to.

If DFW has really bad w/x, it's not uncommon for DFW-bound widebodies to stop in BNA or STL. I'd say in BNA, we get between 5 and 10 a year.

Found a 763 at STL a while ago:

No 777 however, nor AA.
