California Pacific Airlines' First Arrival Into CLD

Thu Jul 05, 2012 6:37 pm

The first arrival of our Embraer 170 into Carlsbad, CA (CLD) is scheduled for Friday morning, July 6th, between 8:45AM and 9:15AM PDT. You should be able to follow its progress at FlightAware.com with the tail number N176EC. Departure is scheduled at 7AM CDT from Nashville (BNA.) Personally I will be by Staples to watch it land right down the centerline.

Our Embraer 170 on its first acceptance flight.

Good to hear. Thanks for the update, Randy...

It's nice to see a home carrier operting in SD again, even if it's not at SAN.

Any suggestions where to go for the best photo ops of its arrival into CLD?

Beautiful aircraft. Against all the odds and naysayers, I am so happy for CPA! Best of luck and I hope to soon sample the hospitality of your carrier!

Some decent spots are on the north side in the back of local business parking lots. There are several that don't have trees and can almost the whole airport.

Personally I will be by Staples to watch it land right down the centerline.

Staples is in first shopping center east of CLD/CRQ off of Loker Way. From the location facing West, you look right up the runway. (The whole runway is visible while driving west from this spot on Palomar Airport Rd).
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=92081&...a+92081&gl=us&t=h&z=20

After following link above, zoom out a little and look west; you will see the threshold of (runway) 24 on the west side of El Camino Real.

I've never spotted from the parking lot but I've worked in this area for 20 years. I think I'll check it out tomorrow, though. I can't miss this. Too cool!

So that's who it was. I've been working her the past couple of weeks, and was wondering who it was. Unfortunatly everytime it's been out and about I was in the tracon, and didn't get to see it in person. I was at the Embraer earlier today but didn't see it on the ramp. I'm working tomorrow, but in the afternoon. Good luck to all the employees. Which airline did it previously come from? We get a lot of exotic stuff at BNA for Embraer, and I've heard rumors they're going to expand. Also off topic but have they found a buyer for all the old freedom and mesa 145's out there? At least twice a week I have a pilot or two asking about them.

I've wondered that myself. IMHO, given the beautiful livery and the locale, I think Surfliner would fit like a glove.

Nice presentation, that is one of the best liveries I've seen come out on a US based carrier for a long time. Seems like they have a solid plan, and I hope one they build it, the people will come, I do see real potential, I'm rooting for this startup, I'd be happy just to have them prove it can be done still. If they ever come up to PDX, I'll take them to CLD just for the route on my map. Best wishes and best luck CPAir. BTW, has the IATA code been acquired? 2 digits, a digit and a number I suspect, too bad they couldn't get CP, or can they, even if they paid for the rights like what was done with PA?

CP is still assigned to Canadi>n Airlines, an airline which has not existed for 12 years. One would hope they would be able to acquire that code.

LOL, some times you just have to let go. Although for me, CPAir will always be orange!

This is very good news, and I think congratulations to California Pacific are certainly warranted. These ideas come and go, but to actually have an aircraft, in their paint scheme arrive at their home base ... they have already overcome 99% of the hurdles!

Clearly, a business case is in place, or investors would not have come forward. It is always exciting to see the start of a new airline.

Great to see them up an running....can someone refresh me on their business model/strategy? I've been a bit perplexed as to what angle they're taking. From what I gather, it's basically a West Coast/intra-CA shuttle-type offering, but I haven't come to where the fundamental value proposition is.

Their value proposition is in creating a market niche that reaches a populous and affluent catchment area in the north county of San Diego. My guess is that CPA will seek to extract a revenue premium by providing a convenient alternative to having to drive to San Diego to catch flights to Northern California and other destinations.

As California's population has expanded, I believe there is a need for more of this type of service at unserved and under-served suburban airports throughout the state. Horizon's success in the Santa Rosa market is a good example of this. It's all about satisfying human need by fulfilling demand for an alternative to having to navigate CA's clogged highways, pay for expensive parking, just to catch a one hour flight between N. California and S. California.

I have an entire intra-state route map drawn out, where this type of airline service (suburban airport to major Northern/Southern airports) could be a feasible option.

Great info! That makes a lot of sense actually. There has to be a decent amount of demand that is fed up with going to the major airports just to fly up the coast a bit.

I have to say, having lived and driven around in the SoCal area, I believe that this airline, if well-managed, could succeed well, and I fervently hope for its success. It would represent a great improvement for north county dwellers.

ETA for the aircraft is 11:40AM into Carlsbad, CA (CLD,) give or take 20 minutes for wind. Our Chief Pilot Bret Ebaugh is Captain of the flight. We do have our IATA, ICAO, and call sign provisionally assigned, but will wait closer to revenue launch (pending regulatory approval) when they become permanent to announce them. CP is unfortunately assigned to Compass, but our code will fit our overall theme. You can track the flight west at:

I am curious if they will be get a code share. to me it would seem a no-brainer but I don't know the behind the scenes intricacies that are involved. It would think it would be beneficial to CalPac. I can think of two to three airlines that might be potential shares.

Looking forward to flying on California Pacific. Just relocated across the country and live 10 minutes from SJC. Unfortunately my usual airline AA has terrible options for getting me down to SAN. Flown WN but they are not my cup of tea and overrated IMHO. SJC-CLD is just what I am looking for. Would love to be on the inaugural flight and hope details on launch dates become available soon.

I have no idea, but it's interesting that on their website, when you click "About", it lists airport info for Carlsbad Airport, including a mention of UA. It might be due to UAEx service at the airport right now, but it was interesting nonetheless that they mention UA specifically.

So I made the drive to CLD once I saw the flight was due to arrive near noon.

After a flyby on its original approach, CPA's first aicraft, N176EC (soon to be re-registered as N760CP - "760" is the area code for San Diego North County) touched down effortlessly on runway 24.

Dressed to impress in San Diego business casual, i.e., board shorts, flats (flip-flops), and some random t-shirt from some random bar in Maui, I drove over to the Premier Jet offices where CPA was hosting a hospitality function. I'm not entirely sure it was meant to be open to the public, but I was raised to never look a gift horse in the mouth (or as my ESL wife says, "don't say 'no' to a horse's gift towards its mouth"), I proceeded directly to the plane.

I got to meet some of the CPA management team and had the chance to congratulate them firsthand. I toured the E170 inside and out, and then proceeded to wait (along with another a.netter) for the crowd to disperse.

It was a generally celebratory atmosphere, as well it should have been, as once again we have a home carrier gracing the skies over San Diego.  http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2050/dsc00211200x800.jpg

Thanks, Sunking... During my time there I heard more than one reflection on San Diego's former hometown airline, PSA, and CPA even references them in their first magazine issue. It was all too easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm, and I sincerely wish them all the best and many decades of prosperity.

Nice job with the camera and great thanks to you, 'nuts for the recap of the day's festivities. I really wish I could've been there in person. (Was Ted passing out light blue-banded cigars to everyone?)

And again, to the entire team putting CP Air together, congratulations to you all for all the hard work (so far!) and best wishes for continued success in getting that first revenue flight off the ground as soon as possible!

I was born in San Diego one year before PSA was and grew up with them. I've got to say, this entire adventure with CP Air has a LOT of similar vibes coming off of it and it feels really good. It's of course a whole different world out there now but success stories still happen, and I truly feel this will be another of them!

There are some very postitive things going on these days in civil aviation in the San Diego area and this is certainly one of the top stories of 2012!
