ORD Diversions In To RFD Today

Thu Jul 05, 2012 9:39 pm

I see 5 or 6 diversions into RFD today and 3 or 4 just circling just east of Janesville to the thunderstorms going over ORD today. Are there any other diversions today?

Looks like things have cleared enough, the remaining aircraft are turning inbound to ORD now.

I'm surprised there haven't been more of these storms the past few days with how hot and humid its been. Around MKE it surpassed triple digits for the first time since 1995, and I don't know about you guys but I love it!
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I was reassigned 3 times in about 30 minutes today due to diverts and cancellations. Things are mostly back to normal around the airport and I'm scheduled to leave for BUF but we have no flight attendant or gas so we're just sitting here. Nothing was even forecast for today, the two cells literally popped up out of nowhere.

Quite a few diversions to RFD and also IND, GRR & MKE. It looks like the weather was relatively unplanned which resulted in more diversions since airlines were likely not planning as much fuel for weather holding. Every once in a while it bites them.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Amazing how these storms popped up. No Intl diversions, but it was a mess when the ramp at T5 was shut down twice for 45 minutes due to lighting. The longest hold ended up being 40 minutes for a gate.

I was hearing within 15 miles of the lake these storms could pop up anytime until the weather finally breaks tomorrow night.

I had CLTV on yesterday, and Tim McGill was saying that there was a dome of hot air over southern Lake Michigan. So, thunderstorms wouldn't pop up over Chicago and areas to the east and west. It was more likely that thunderstorms would pop up to the south, say Springfield, or to the north, such as Wausau or Green Bay. Needless to say, I saw the build up of dark clouds towards the O'Hare area and was surprised.

This weekend could make for a ton of diversions and cancellations in the northeast and midwest as a cold front moves in to finally break the heat wave from Saturday night through Sunday evening.
