DL CRJs At GFK

Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:10 am

DL currently runs 6x daily to GFK on CRJ2s. With the slow cutback of the type could we expect something bigger up here? I know in the NW days they were running larger types there but obviously times have changed. Any way there could be an up tick to either an E175 or a CRJ7? UA just recently announced service too so I was wondering if they might try to hold onto their pretty near monopoly on service by introducing first? I can't imagine it is a very elite heavy route but it would be a nice change.

I can see DL cutting back to 4 flights a day and replacing 2 of the CR2s with CR7s or ERJ 145s. I think E175s (or CR9s for that matter) are highly unlikely because I don't foresee a huge demand for the route, especially if they only cut back to 4 flights. I think frequency will overrule capacity. Now if DL did what UA is doing at cut back to 2 flights a day then I can see one of those flights being an E175, but I doubt DL will do that. I believe that DL will upgauge the route if it feels that it needs more capacity on certain flights between those city pairs, and I think FC would be a secondary benefit. They could decide to upgauge because of first class though, you never know...

The CR2 is perfect for the route simply because of the very short stage length. The CR7 is a possibility at some point but I don't know that the 175 will make an appearance. DL likes to send the 175 to somewhat larger markets like FAR and BIL.

even the Winnipeg-Minneapolis route is only served by CRJs 5-6 times a day.

Why has DL cut capacity so much in this market? Is it just to up yields? I mean all of North Dakota is the best economy in the US right now. I remember back in 2007 NW flew 3x DC-9-50/30, 1x CRJ, and 1x SF3. Granted the SF3 continued to DVL, but surely there are not as many seats now as there used to be. Why?

We're tentatively showing a CR7 loaded on a couple Saturday mornings in September as well as one CR9 flight on another Saturday morning in that month.

It might be a one-off for heavy military movement in/out of Camp Grafton, but it's a start at any rate.

We had the E175 up through the end of last summer, and then lost it. Initial rumblings are that with the 50-seater retirements being accelerated, we might see more 70-seat lift at GFK as the 717s come online and start displacing 70-seat flying in 2013.

At some time in the past, hasn't this route been operated by NW on DC-10's, 727-100's and 200's, plus A320's?

I am not sure that Delta needs more capacity. As of right now, they are not filling the flights that they have, regardless of the economy.

DOn't know about the DC-10s, but definitely 727s and A320.

We even had the rare NW 747-400 stop by. I believe it was a delivery flight/flight test of some sort. A few years ago, I remember visiting the YWG old terminal's tarmac viewing area, and looking out the window at the eye same eye level as the pilot getting the 747 ready for a flight to MSP. It was very cool to be so close to 747 without being on the flight.
Always looking for the longest route with the most transfers.

I can remember when NW operated Winnipeg-MSP with a 707. Times have changed.

Yeah Winnipeg-Minneapolis has operated with pretty much every aircraft under NW's belt, from 747-400 to Saab 340.

A few 747-400s were delivered via YWG-MSP in order to save on taxes. DC-10s were used decades ago. 4x 757-200 flights were about 20 years ago, switching to 4x MD-80s for a while, then eventually ending up with the lovely 50-seat CRJs.

I'm not totally surprised to see regional jets only @ GFK. I mean the airport serves a population of about 70,000 people? Winnipeg (albeit with a lot more competition) serves a market of about 700,000 people.

The biggest change I see here guys isn't that they are smaller planes, 6x CR2 isn't bad for a city the size of Grand Forks. What I see as a big change is the complete lack of first class service. FAR, MOT, BIS all have first class available, and GFK does not. I am guessing this isn't a coincidence and shows the lack of premium demand into/out of GFK...

Of the four biggest markets in the state GFK easily has the least premium demand. Fargo is the burgeoning economic center and largest city by far, Bismarck the capital and Minot the de facto hub for the oil boom (since Williston lacks the air infrastructure). Since the flood of '97 Grand Forks has really not grown.

Are they really hurting that bad? GFK airport numbers for I believe it was April was the highest the airport had ever had in one month. Unless a lot of that is driven by G4.

MD80s do make quite a splash at an airport otherwise served only by small RJS.

That said, there are other factors for GFK. It pulls from Canada, other smaller markets like DVL and TVF and it can also pull from the FAR market if the fares are lower at GFK. It all depends on what the factors in April happened to be.

I wouldn't be surprised to see larger aircraft and even maybe a SLC flight with UA's entry into the market.
