(Turkish only but you'll get the message);
http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/ekonomi/20935311.asp

June passenger numbers at IST up 25% to 4,043,782.
Trend continues, on July 6th another record day at IST with 562 landings, 557 departures.
Congrats and I hope they can still keep it safe and comfortable for everyone.

Amazing growth. Makes China look slow.

How much traffic is Turkey versus transfer due THY hub ?

Yikes. Great news for IST and for Turkey and highlights the fact that Ataturk is pretty close to maxed out. I know there are loose plans for a new airport somewhere north of the city (and SAW looks like it could get another runway and take some of the traffic) but if TK is going to continue growing this really illustrates the need to get dirt moving quickly!

AFAIK, transfer pax numbers for TK was up 44% in the first 5 months of the year, but I am not sure of the total number.
Also TK is on course to beat its aim of carrying 38mil pax this year.

International transfers represented 39.6% of TK traffic as of Q1.

But important to remember not all growth at IST is due to TK hub transfer, but instead the Turkish economy and tourism sector is hot. Air travel for both leisure and business continues to grown in Turkey, while inbound tourism is also getting ready to set another record year in 2012.

The Turkish growth never cease to amaze me, it's even faster than the Asian one. I'm also glad TK is doing so well, always a pleasure to see their flights here at GOT, soon going double daily.

What I was thinking though, was why they can't move the majority of other carriers (handling mainly O/D) to SAW, while making IST an airport for TK and Star members only? That would atleast allow some further growth.

Wow. The growth is spectacular. If any hubbing airline can outgrow EK, it will be TK.

Good luck. That would be like moving all traffic from LHR to LGW that wasn't BA or VS or from FRA to HHN. The trade war would fly. (e.g., forget JFK, BDL would have to do). That would create a diplomatic row. It would be be better to build the new IST replacement airport as fast as possible. Any new news? 5-runways and better transfer terminals would solve the issue.

And its not just IST. Traffic is booming all over Turkey.

For the first 6-months of 2012

IST +22%
ADA +19%
GZT +13%
SAW +10%
ESB +10%
ADB +9%
ERZ +9%
TZX +8%

All told out of 47 Turkish airports, the average passenger growth rate was 10.4% for the first 6-months.

What global recession ??
