Could Emirates Upgrade Dublin To A380 In Future?

Sun Jul 08, 2012 6:45 pm

With EK upgrading its DUB - DXB route from and A330 to 777W within just a few months could EK upgrade to an A380 in the near future with more A380 deliveries coming to EK and freeing them up a bit could DUB get an A380 with in a few years if they upgrade the airport for the A380?

Long term perhaps. What they'll do first is increase frequency.

I agree with David_itl; it will want to move to a second daily service and I could see that happening within the next 1-2 years; the overnight departure from DUB would connect more efficiently with the morning departures from DXB to Australia, so that service would do well.

I really can't see an A380 happening for some time to come; filling two 777s a day would be much better than one A380; great if it happens, but I don't see it for some time yet.

Could a packed A380 even lift off the runway at DUB?

Out of curiosity, does EK have a limit on flights into and out of DUB? Might it consider continuing on to the US and would they be able to use US pre-clearance?

Yes it shouldn't be a problem on a mid-haul flight to DXB.

That would be very interesting......

I think it's against the law for a non E.U airline to to make a stopover in DUB just to use the U.S preclearence but it would be great

Even in a scenario where it may be packed with pax, it would not need anywhere near a full load of fuel - remember, EK have sent the A380 to BHX before, which has an even shorter runway. I think this runway issue is way over played - it is absolutely not a problem for flights of this duration. Any runway that a 747 can get off, an A380 can too.

No, no limits, there is open skies between Ireland and the UAE, and yes, Emirates could use US pre-clearance, but given they have aircraft with the ability to do USA-UAE non stop, i'm not really sure they would want to.

MAN has a dounle daily with an A380 and A330 would it not just be better using a 777W both ways?

The runway length is no problem, the 380 needs less runway than the 747. But you might need to make some changes to the taxiways where there are turns involved, these areas would probably need widening. But you wouldn't have to do all taxiways, just a few designated A380 routes.
Another thing you would need is a gate large enough. You don't want to remote park it on a scheduled basis.

Pier B would be very adaptable for this. It already has an upper level (that is not even being used anymore) that could be adapted to provide upper level boarding.

Actually Manchester has
1 morning A332, 1 afternoon A380 and 1 evening 77W each day.

The A332 is scheduled to go to a 773 in September.

Manchester will then have First Class on all three daily flights.

Actually 3 daily:

EK21/22 - currently A330 going 777 shortly
EK17/18 - currently A380
EK19/20 - currently 77W.

Interesting conjecture for next year at MAN:

1) EK23/24 begins
2) EK19/20 goes A380
3) EK begins daily cargo

1) could happen on its own

2) and 3) are interlinked

If all three happen, I'll be shocked.

Already seen one analyst saying MAN's demand is as robust as LHR's for EK.

I can well believe that. Four daily by the end of 2013 with 2 x A388 and 2 x 77W would be my suggestion.

No. The outer 4 gates at Pier B have no space constraints of any sort with regards to other piers. The A380 is also not a very long aircraft compared with the 77W which uses Pier B often on Air France rugby charters.

There are no infrastructure constraints that cannot be sorted out quite easily.

While I also believe that a second daily frequency is in the cards, as soon as next year, an upgauge of the sole morning flight is not without precedent. EK is about to start sending the A388 to AMS, although it had initially filed for a second daily frequency.

within the next 10 years or so DUB could see an A380 from EK but most of EK's passengers are probably only making a stopover at DXB onto australasia

I'm going to agree with this. DUB is for expatriate traffic and being connected to a second wave would improve demand more than the bar on the A380.

But let us face it. The bar on the A380 should be very popular from DUB.

From what I've heard on DUB demand, I could see both within the next 12 months.

The demand is very high, within a few weeks of there inagural flight EK announced that they would upgrade to a 777W starting from july first but the aircraft upgrade was needed so bad they deceided to start using the 777W from may 1st

I remember when the service was first announced, there was talk on a certain other site that:

A) DUB would not work for EK
B) There was "no demand"
C) Those idiots over on a.net already talking about an A380

Good to see the first two at least utterly disproved!

I wont hold my breath on the A380, but it's good to see it actually being taken seriously.
