Lego Model Of Trent 1000 At Farnborough

Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:55 pm

Rolls Royce are showing a "working" Lego model of the Trent 1000 engine at Farnborough this year!

It is apparently the most complicated machine ever built from Legos: 152,455 pieces, 307 kg, 2m long, and it spins!

Here's a video of the thing in action -- amazing!

As a huge aviation and Lego fan, now I can die happy. Awesome how they got the compressor blades to contra-rotate.
I didn't get a 'Harumph' outta that guy!

Certainly makes it easier to tweak the core, the fan and any other bits when its made from Lego! PIP's are easy to add! Any airlines sign up yet? The maintenance must be pretty low....

At the risk of sounding cliche, I just have to suggest that someone builds a full scale Lego 787 to hang that beauty off of.

Think of the maintenance and AOG implications. If you have an engine problem you A&P can run to the local toystore and will have spares for any incident. Of course I think you need to have little cup shaped hands and oversized plastic wrenches to get certification to work on them.

I promise I searched for "Lego 'Rolls Royce'", "Lego 'Trent 1000'", and one other, and none of those searches brought up that thread...

I would guess the maintenance can get tricky once the pieces are all fused together !

Ooops, you certainly mean a four holed A350-1000 with SNECMA 1001s - everything is possible with Legoes -, powercube, don't you!!! Remember, Denmark is in the EU and the Danish Queen's husband is French!

But the turbines all turn the same way! The HP turbine is *clearly* turning the wrong way for the HP compressor! And shouldn't there be an obvious speed difference between the fan and LP compressor spools (and their associated turbines)?

But seriously, how do I get a job like this?

I think we should congratulate the guy at Rolls Royce who convinced his boss that is something that the company absolutely had to have.

They gave the task to interns and apprentices. Great thinking - now how are you ever going to get them to do real work???
