WN Adds More FLL-BWI, NK Response?

Wed Jul 11, 2012 4:37 pm

This would seem to respond to NK's entry into BWI-FLL which I don't think was in a press release, but is live in their system. Ironically, NK sold their DCA slots to WN forcing the move to BWI.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/southw...-additional-flights-150000503.html

It's particularly suspicious to see a separate release for it just 2 days after their new schedule announcement.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a knee-jerk reaction by WN. NK is slowly chipping away at their super cheap flyers(probably just a mosquito at this point considering how large Southwest is) since they have expanded out of their usual Florida/Caribbean presence in recent years. NK has added several flights out of LAS to a lot of the bread and butter WN cities, and also places like MSP-MDW. You could probably also argue they have a small but decent presence in DFW now slightly impacting DAL fares ( and a non-stop compared to a one-stop is a no brainer for many). It is rare WN adds three flights at once to a long-standing route - particularly a Florida route at the beginning of September.

HOWEVER, is it possible EWR is providing a fair amount of Florida feed for WN? Unfortunately DOT numbers are not available yet on EWR-BWI for Southwest, at least that I can find. Cool info to go over below, though on BWI-FLL:

According to flightaware (beta fare insight) in the previous 12 months on BWI-FLL:

Routing Carrier Popularity Minimum Median Maximum
non-stop Southwest 40% $53.56 $146.80 $381.93
non-stop AirTran 37% $50.23 $128.02 $535.02
via CLT US Airways 4% $51.98 $151.48 $730.01
via ATL Delta 4% $69.30 $135.37 $993.98
via ATL AirTran 3% $56.00 $131.20 $623.04
via TPA Southwest 2% $65.04 $139.95 $397.00
via MCO Southwest 1% $83.47 $127.67 $339.97
via JAX Southwest 1% $79.76 $132.04 $442.04
via PHL US Airways 1% $60.05 $136.98 $528.99

Non-stops only figured in this table:
Carrier Percentage of seats filled Total seats Passengers Average per flight
Southwest 86% 213,090 180,745 116
AirTran 77% 164,308 128,984 95

That puts Load factor (LF) for WN slightly above system average, but isn't anything amazing considering WN tends to have lower LF's on short-hauls, and higher LF's on the medium and especially long hauls (for example SAN-BWI averages 92% LF). I don't see anything amazing as far as fair yields, although a mean would be a much better to work with than a median for figuring out ticket revenue.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. Delta didn't respond to Valujet/Airtran and allowed a hub to be set up in their front yard because those customer were chasing cheap fares.

Valujet/Airtran didn't charge for carry-ons and otherwise nickel and dime their passengers!

Baltimore is a fortress hub for Southwest. They will be very prepared, and ready to pounce.

The Maryland Aviation Administration likes to say that they are the low cost Airport.

I guess BA,UA, AA, US, and DL no longer count.

AWAC, I'm talking about the early days in the mid-90's when nobody charged fees like today. Including Airtran, who still charges bag fees to their customers, despite being on a single certificate with Southwest.

WN is stopping MCO-FLL does that leave NK the only one flying this route?

Yes, NK is the only one on MCO-FLL starting January. Sad...

That sucks. I love that flight. Always wide open (probably why they're dumping it) and non revving is way better than driving.

We FL/WN usually pack our flights to FLL. So the more the merrier. We need to give Darth Vadir (AA) come competition with non stop flights to MIA.

I'm not really sure that's the case, since for some routes, Southwest lets it's competitors fly the route like BWI-MSP, and the preference by residents into/out of the DC MSA is using DCA over BWI. BWI's catchment is a little different serving Baltimore MSA best and ability to pull from the eastern shore of MD, western MD maybe, Cecil, Delaware and York County, PA better than other WAS airports.

From Wilmington DE, it's faster on a train to BWI than driving to ACY, and drive to BWI is the same time as to ACY.

Anyways, I think NK will just help grow the overall market, and it will keep WN in check at BWI, like how AirTran did prior to acquisition. WN ensuring its competitiveness on BWI-FLL might hurt it's ability to keep BWI-PBI. A lot of that traffic can be funneled via ATL-PBI or nonstop access already from BOS and NYC on another carriers.
