DL To Drop SWF From ATL

Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:59 am

Word today from Stewart Airport Commission Chairman James Wright that DL (via ExpressJet) is dropping its two daily CRJ roundtrips from SWF to ATL on 9/1. Poor loads...the reason given by the airline. Wright also told a local cable TV station that the SWF-DTW flights are also doing poorly.

The hits just keep on coming for Stewart. The Port Authority has a real ghost town on its hands...

Besides this threatened service, who else is flying out of there?

Phew, I'm flying them on August 29 to ATL. Bummer they are leaving though. SWF is a nice easy alternative to NYC. They may not have the direct flights they have in the city, but it sure beats the madness JFK and LGA can be at rush hour.

It was a big mistake of the Port Authority to take on SWF as a reliever airport given it's 60 miles from Manhattan in a region that is outside the population belt of the NYC metropolitan area.

After September 1st, I believe all that's left will be DL to DTW, US to PHL and B6 to MCO and FLL....

Interestingly, SWF-ATL passengers are up 54% over 2011 according to Transtats... DTW is down slightly. Did DL make some kind of radical schedule adjustment recently?

This is probably the death-knell for SWF which is sad because it is such a great airport. The incredible issue is that if you want to avoid the madness of LGA, JFK, and EWR in the northern suburbs of New York City, your only choice now is HPN. HPN is hopelessly overcrowded with poor facilities, poor parking, short runways, and hostile neighbors. I've been on the DL flights to ATL and DTW many times, always a positive experience, and full flights. The only alternative now is US to PHL which is absolutely hopeless. They just f__k up the connection each and every time.

And the funny thing is that I saw Sen Chuck Schumer on the street recently, walked up to him and said, 'we need more service to Stewart Airport!' He said, 'we're working on it!'

Agreed. SWF is a GREAT little airport. I was just up there a few weeks ago. I really like our crew up there, the facilities are really quite nice and modern, lots of space, everything flows well. HPN is really a horror show when it comes to space and flow. I hope Uncle Chuck is right and can help get this "diamond in the rough" polished up in terms of extra service. Who knows, maybe with the right service you might get less people heading over to HPN and flying out of SWF instead. Really a shame though right now

I agree i think with HPN open SWF expansion never really had a chance. HPN is a huge pain and way over crowded etc but its just a better location and fares tend to be lower and for a large amount of people its on the way. I tried to book SWF a few times and HPN or EWR were just a ton cheaper.

The best case scenario i can see for the airport is if the port authority gives spirit the deal of a lifetime to move up there and spirit can sell its LGA slots for pure cash to southwest or delta. B6 already flys out of the airport and southwest has invested too much in LGA and EWR slots to have interest with ALB so close as well. The airport just dosnt make sense for southwest being between ALB and EWR.

I commuted for years out of HPN when it was still a quonset hut with an incredible restaurant. I could park for free right in front of the terminal and it was an easy drive from Ridgefield, CT where I grew up. (just watch your speed on I-684!)

I will never understand why Stewart has been unable to be viable. No one who lived in Westchester County or Connecticut enjoyed the drive to LGA or JFK and nearby residents of HPN had a love/hate relationship with the airport,( i.e. Iove the short drive but don't fly over my Greenwich home). It literally took DECADES to get a new terminal that did not require you to walk in the rain to and from the airplane and your luggage sat outside in the weather.

I guess I blame poor marketing and a lack of local elected support for the failure of Stewart. I now live a ten minute drive from PHF and we are experiencing the same problem here--drive an hour to RIC or risk the wrath of the tunnel to ORF.

PHF is a wonderful airport with easy access, a great terminal and reasonably priced parking. But the prices out of PHF are outrageous as compared to ORF. Was this the same with Stewart where you paid through the nose for the convenience?

I would assume that other than LGB, is it that most of these (for lack of a better term) secondary airports near large hubs have airlines serving them that feel that far more of a premium can be charged than the nearby folks are willing to pay?

When the price difference is too vast..... most will take a dreaded drive to the nearby hub..... and save a lot of $$$$$. But on the other hand, an airport like CAK did well because it attracted the low fare carriers, and offered bargains in comparison (CLE the case here) the nearby hub.

Now, with PHF, it is unfortunate that it lost FL due to the merger with WN, but it was on the right track I believe that F9 is still there for traffic way out west, but hopefully, somehow fares there can remain competitive to attract the passengers needed to fill the planes going north and south and not so far west.

I agree with the above statements. SWF suffered from a lack of publicity - many local residents in the surrounding areas weren't even aware that there was viable service. At one time, the airport was seviced by AA, NW, DL, US, B6, AirTran. You could occasionally catch a good fare, but most often the fares were marginally higher - a fair premium in my opinion to avoid the migraine of driving around the NYC area. But sometimes the variance is too huge to make it worthwhile, especially if you're a family. And again, HPN has become a very popular airport, although I can't figure out why.

Perhaps SWF could be turned into a huge cargo facility. There's certainly enough room, the longest runway is 12000 ft, and the airport sits at the intersection of two major interstates.

As has been said elsewhere in this thread and on the board, SWF's big problem is its location. The population of the NY metro area is concentrated westward into NJ and to the east and northeast out to Nassau/western Suffolk County, Westchester County, and lower Fairfield County. The NJ and LI crowd really isn't part of this discussion, but for Westchester residents and most Fairfield County residents, going up to SWF makes absolutely zero sense. Yes, HPN's facility is a complete mess and it is currently overrun with people. But down here everybody raves about it - primarily because it is so convenient to so many people. For many people in Westchester/White Plains/Lower Fairfield the airport is only minutes away. I know for me, I can make it down to HPN in under 30 minutes if I'm flying down the Merritt without traffic. SWF on the other hand is over an hour and a half away. My situation is not unique. The population of the metro area is setup so that for most, flying out of SWF over HPN makes very little sense.

There has been talk that Allegiant is eyeing adding a base in the New York City region. SWF is often speculated as the home to that potential hub.

Has anyone else heard this?

I know Allegiant left SWF before, but that was when they were using that as a departure airport. This would be as a focus city airport.

I think it was in one of their annual reports or a planning presentation of some kind. They also mentioned MSY and CUN. I'm just speculating, but I wouldn't count on that happening any time soon. They've had a pretty busy year, adding bases at OAK, HNL, and OGG, and expanding PGD.

If Allegiant dropped SWF before, I cant't see why they would want to come back with expanded service this time around. Does not make that much sense.

Looking at a map, SWF sure is in a very remote location to much of the populated areas of NYC. Look like a good facility, but will be a stretch to get it to work IMHO.

SWF needs a high-speed rail line to NNJ and Penn Station if it ever wants to be successful.
